HortIdeas-We reviewed the first volume of this two-volume set in September 2005 HortIdeas--in fact, we were so impressed by it that we devoted that month's Book Reviews section entirely to it. Until Mycelium Running--another amazingly important and well-done book--appeared, we were considering doing the same this month for the second volume of Edible Forest Gardens, which is much thicker (by more than 270 pages!) than the first volume. The shorter length of this review certainly does not reflect the relative importance of the volumes--we recommend that anyone interested in experimenting with temperate-zone "gardening in the image of the forest" should study both.Although Volume 2 ostensibly emphasizes "practical" information building on the "theoretical" ideas in Volume 1, it is clear that both volumes are essentially theoretical. That's because (as we discussed in our review of Volume 1) nobody has yet convincingly shown the viability of forest gardening (relying heavily on perennial crops) in temperate areas as a sustainable alternative to conventional gardening (based mainly on annual crops). Jacke and Toensmeier are, admirably, attempting to disseminate ideas gathered from a variety of source that might enable such viability. Ultimately, at this stage development of temperate-zone forest gardening techniques, virtually all approaches are experimental and in need of validation. We simply do not currently know their limitations.Understanding that knowledge on "nest practices" for temperate-zone forest gardening needs to be established experimentally can be exciting for those willing and able to adopt the scientific attitude: no matter how they turn out, the results of an experiment, performed appropriately (meaning especially that adequate control treatments are provided), are never "bad." This was a required text for a course on Ecological Design that I was taking. It is a fabulous book. My instructor chose this volume because it includes more of the design process than Volume 1 (which was not required, but is on my wish list for reference materials). Dave Jacke takes you through the fundamentals of site analysis, evaluating opportunities and constraints and working through the design process.The appendixes alone are probably worth the cost of the book. His nectary calendar is extremely useful for trying to identify plants that will provide food for various pollinators; the species by function chart helps you easily see the best nitrogen fixers and dynamic accumulators; his species lifespan list gives you a reference point for how often you will either need to purchase or regenerate a given species...This is the first time I've ever felt strongly compelled to highlight and mark in my book. Normally, I sell my books back, but this one is a definite KEEPER! I have highlights and stickies throughout marking my most frequently referenced charts.The only caveat/issue I can even think of is... the plants/species are more tailored to the North Eastern United States and less to the Western United States where I live... A great number of the species from the northeast are naturalized here or will grow here, but that may be a limitation/problem for some people.

You know the adage "Hindsight is 20/20"? Well, had I known that information I'd learned in the past 10+ books I've purchased regarding food forestry/permaculture would not only be contained in this book but expanded upon, I would have saved myself hundreds of dollars and weeks of reading. I always balked at the cost of these books and just kept them in my my "Maybe" list. Believe me, I'm kicking myself.The appendices alone are worth the cost of the book. I am the type of person that likes to be told in detail what I should do until I feel confident enough to experiment and come up with my own methods. Especially if I have invested so much time and money to achieve a certain goal. With this book, all of my fears have been assuaged and I feel I have the knowledge and skills to carry out my dreams of a sustainable edible forest garden.I cannot recommend this book enough!

This is the perfect companion for Gaia's Garden and Permaculture: A Designer's Manual (PADM). If I could only have two books on Permaculture it would be Gaia's Garden and Edible Forest Gardens Vol. 2. The tables in this book are worth the price and will save untold hours of research trying to find the right plants for my zone, soil type and how they fit into my plantings. Want to know what nitrogen fixers work in your zone? This is the book. Want to know what bioaccumulators can work well in your soil? This is the book. There are over 600 different forest garden trees, shrubs, and other plants broken down by their role in your design. Having to do this research on my own would triple my design time. I love this book. I've read Vol. 1 of this series and while it is good, I consider it redundant if you already have PADM. While it has some good info in it, I think Vol. 2 has much more to contribute if you already have PADM or Gaia's Garden (or any other of the great permaculture basics books). If you have money to throw around sure, by both volumes, but if you are like me and paying college textbook pricing for a book is hard to justify, trust me that this book is worth the cost.

I like the species matrix charts and certain sections, like the excellent coverage of beneficial microbes. I expected this book to have more specific "Design and Practice" information. It does contain lots of specifics, but is easily 70% basic theory and concepts. This book has the style and format of a college text book. This book is going to seem dry and unnecessarily wordy for most dirt-in-the-fingernails practitioners of permaculture. The charts and index make it an invaluable edible forest species reference manual, but it's not a great book to read cover-to-cover, and I often wonder while reading it, if the author has practical field experience with the concepts presented,

It's no surprise to learn that Dave and Eric worked for seven years to write the Edible Forest Gardens books; the depth and breadth of permaculture knowledge that they present is incredible. Although I've heard some say that these books are not an easy read, I've found them to be fascinating, enjoyable and indispensable.I started my journey into permaculture with Gaia's Garden by Toby Hemenway, then decided to plant an edible forest in the back yard, so I purchased Volume 2 of Edible Forest Gardens, since it covers the practical consideration of forest gardening. Although this book is written so it can stand on its own, I also highly recommend volume 1, which focuses on the ecological vision and theory for temperate climate permaculture. Highly recommended!

This book is amazing. Even just the appendices in the back is worth the price of the book. If you're interested in permaculture, this is a must buy.

If you want to become an expert in edible forest garden design (as well as an expert in general design in your own right) then study this book and its companion volume 1. You won't regret the investment, and neither will the rest of society, after all is said and done!

This book is a tome. Wish it had more pictures, but you can't beat the info!

Zack doesn't always understand Gabe and his nerdiness, but he has accepted him. When Gabe helps Zack convince his parents that they should let him go to sleep away camp Gabe is excited for Zack. A wildfire changes things for both boys. Zack's campgrounds and most of the buildings are destroyed. Gabe's camp extends the hand of welcome to the other camp. They are going to share their campground. Both Gabe and Zack learn that it will be more difficult than they think. To start with the "cool" kids try to rule the camp, bullying the nerds. Then the "nerds" decide to take back the camp. The battles go back and forth. The one common denominator in all of this is Zack and Gabe. Zack has discovered he loves to cook. He is even becoming quite nerdy about it. He overhears his brother make a comment about him and it hurts him. He seeks revenge against his brother. When things once again get out of hand Zack decides he must set things right and find a way to stop the camps from destroying each other.This was full of fun, and practical jokes. There is something here that everyone can relate to. Most importantly for me was the message that ran through about accepting each other's differences. I loved this book and can't keep it on my shelves at school. This should be a must read in all middle schools.

My daughter and I read this book after reading Nerd Camp. Both of us really enjoyed both books. After reading the books, my daughter's friends and classmates borrowed the books from her to read. Everyone loved the books. Perfect for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades reading.

This is a great book for 5th-7th graders, both boys and girls. My daughter read this for a book report. It's a little long for her, but was fun to read.

My son loves Nerd Camp - book 1. He said it turned him on to wanting to read. He was very excited to get Nerd Camp 2.0. He just got it in the mail and started reading it right away.

Elissa Weissman did a spectacular job once again. She brought in all the nerdiness from the first book with new aspects with different characters. I would suggest this book to anyone who needs something fun and educational. She made sure she didn't replay big parts again but still put them in their to relate to the first book. It was everything a second book should be.

Overall, poorly written and limited utility.The first half was an overview of the state of the art (when written, but I expected that with such fast moving technology) in 3D printing broadly. Unfortunately, it was written in a very stilted style that would not have passed a Freshman technical writing course. It used the "Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you told them," format, but badly. It went about four or five levels deep, but after the first pass through, mostly repeated what was covered in the overview, sometimes with the same words, no expansion. They used the same 8 or so examples over and over again. US Military developing deployable 3D printing capability, NASA printing structures using Lunar regolith, etc. The first time through was fine, but after the third or fourth time supposedly in more detail, but with no actual detail added, boring. And that from a working engineer who's eaten up deep technical matter most people find boring for 50+ years.Frankly, it seemed like the authors had 30-40 pages of real content they were instructed to stretch over 150 pages.The second half of the book was a different story. It was a good, broad overview of selecting, acquiring, building, calibrating and first prints from a home Rep Rap printer (what I wanted from the book). Little unnecessary repetition, good descriptions of pros and cons of decisions you'll need to make along the way, including the software and hardware. Nothing you can't find somewhere on the internet, but all in one place and easy to review again if needed. And a pretty good framework to hang the added detail you can find on the internet. If you are more comfortable with books, probably worth the price, if you are really fluent in internet info finding and synthesis, not so much.So, 1-2 stars for the first half (and last 20 pages), 4 stars for the portion on building a rep rap printer.

I gave this book 5 stars because I enjoyed reading it. For me it explained all the aspects of 3D printing in one place which allowed me to become familiar with the techniques, language, engineering and applications of 3D printing in a weekend. After reading this book I am confident about getting into and purchasing a 3D printer.My background is I am handy and computer literate. For me the information was straight forward and easy to comprehend. After reading this I think it will be similar to building a computer in the late 90s. Well maybe easier as the parts appear to be less proprietary. The author gave a very good break down of the build process over several chapters. I though it was well organized and provided good pictures and techniques of the 3D components. I haven't visited many sites or blogs on 3D printing so if you have been scouring the web for a few months you may have picked up the same general information as you will find in this book but because the authors have done this (make a 3D printer - also one is at the pinnacle of this technology ) I found their guidance to be exactly what I was looking for as a neophyte. I am no longer the neophyte I was 48 hours ago and can discuss arduino type boards from ramps to elefu-ra. Injectors like J-type, prusa and e3d and how the gear should be set up for feeding PLA or ABS.If you would like an exploration both historical and technical into 3D printing and are going to buy or build a 3D printer as I am - read this book. This is the only book I will read on the subject after this I will dive into the 3D open source community. Hope this review helps you.

This feels like an extended Wikipedia article. Most for Dummies books are enough to get you started with something, but this is more of a history lesson, with a fair amount of speculation mixed in. Nothing practical here.

Great book for history of 3d printing. I didn't give it 5 stars due to in my opinion should have been a book on how to actually print or really get into speed setting and extruder setups for best quality prints. It could have gone over what a good print looks like or what's happening and how to adjust for the problems you face as a beginner at 3d printing. I do understand that their are hundreds of different brands of printers but they are all trying to do the same thing. That is to make the best prints possible.

Extremely informative. While not having enough information to make you an expert, it does have enough information to explain to you the fundamentals of 3d printing and the effects it will have on society and the world! If you would like a bit of background on 3d printing and materials, this book is perfect for you.

I just finished building my own 3D Printer from a kit when this book finally arrived at my door. I read it in about 3 days, highlighting all the important (or at least, important areas to me).This book helped me tremendously with calibrating my bed and extruder. Made Slic3r and Pronterface much more easy to understand and gave great tips on settings for different types of prints.Seriously, a great book to have in your 3D printing collection.A side note, this book does mention a bit about building 3D printers from kits. I built my Prusa i3 from the Makerfarm kit, which I was very surprised not to see mentioned in this book as it's an all-inclusive kit that really solves a lot of the guesswork. It's also a great way to learn the ins-and-outs of 3d printers so you can go on to build your own.

I really liked this book for the simple fact that it convinced me to NOT get into 3-D printing. It’s comprehensive enough that you get the ins and outs of 3-D printing and provides the information you need to make an informed decision. As for me, I will stick with “subtractive manufacturing “ and carefully hew my projects from steel and brass on the lathe and mill.

It should be called the HISTORY of 3d printing for dummies.

It's sad to see the end of Hellequin's story, but now we get to read the start of Nate's. And, I mean Nate as whole, new, powerful person. I can't wait to see just what he is capable of now that the blood curse marks are all gone. Of course, a lot is still wrong in the earth realm (and other realms), so I am sure much excitement is still to be had. The author did a great job of wrapping up this story, but still leaving so much left to be told.For those readers who are wondering, this is not a standalone book. You will be hopelessly lost without the previous books. Read those first, you won't regret it. The books are available on Kindle Unlimited, fabulous deal - not like many of the abundant series offerings that are no more than a single book broken up.These books remind me of the Iron Druid chronicles, with the level of detail and research put into mythology.Do yourself a favor and pick these up, you'll love them.Just one quick thought... I thought his wife's name was Jane, not Mary...

Nate is living a nice semi-retired life becoming reacquainted with Selene, when he is asked by Arthur to go to Shadows Falls and talk to Galahad.Mordred, Tommy & family, and most of Nate’s other friends become involved when Elaine is captured.Much violence and many deaths later, Nate is recovering, leaving us with this section of the Hellequin/Avalon world books being complete. Although, it does leave open for more Nate stories. Also, the Author says it’s not the last we have seen of Nate.

I am writing this for the whole series. Honestly I was not very thrilled after the 1st book, but I forced myself to go forward, hopping for the best. 1st person dialog is used, which makes a good development of the main character, however, because everything is seen through the eyes of one person, the rest of the characters lack depth, and it is hard to create a bond with them. As you encounter them many times through the story, you get to know them better, however, it is not ideal. You should keep going after 1st book, so do not give up just yet.The writing is getting better as the story goes on, less cheesy sex, and more action and adventure. In the last book the author gets half the book from 3rd person perspective, which is clearly an improvement in the writing style, and lets you get to know Mordred better.The narration is quite good, but it takes a little to get used with the narrator, which has some interesting intonations. The last 2 books are narrated by somebody else, which is not a plus(even if narration is good), as you get used with the original one through the previous 5 books.This being said, I recommend the books, and looking forward to follow the story into the Avalon Chronicles!

Mchugh did it again.... and better than ever He told us that this would be the last hellequin novel and... it in way it truly is... Hellequin out with a bang, and leaves the door open more to come. I am happy the series did not end. This urban fantasy world is filled with rich characters full of life. You feel for them and with them.. from the remy the fox hybrid, Zamek the "lost" dwarf, to Mordred bad guy turned good guy. I actually enjoyed the chapters which was from his view more than I thought I would.. It gave him a lot more depth and a lot of questions regarding him was answered. To Nate... finally maybe being happy....and.... well I am not going to spoil it for you, and all the others. A great story ..my only regret is that then next book is out not out yet =)

Wow, talk about twists and turns and delicious reveals! Nate Garrett was such a treat in Crimes Against Magic and, like a long time friendship, he only gets better. He's a man rooted in the long ago past but, who is reluctantly hip to pop culture. This whole series is full of love, action and tragedy. It's a helluva ride.With the huge cast of characters, it's probably best to begin with Crimes Against Magic and work your way along. Scorched is a good book in, and of, itself. But, the really sink into the story, you need to know the back stories. Start at the beginning. Every one of these books is great. You won't be sorry.

I cannot stress enough how much I have enjoyed this series! It's witty, action-packed, and keeps you engaged throughoit the entire book. I was worried this was the last book, and I'm glad to know it isn't. There are still too many unanswered questions!A few discrepancies, but it didn't take away from the overall story. I've reread the all, and they just get better with each read.Mordred and Nate....wow! Each of these characters are fun to read. Dark, witty, and both standout characters you can't get enough of. Nate and Tommy's friendship is such a great portrayal of what true friends are supposed to be. Great to see Selene back in the picture, and any scene with Hades, Remy and Diana are always a joy to read! Grayson was a surprise! I want to see more of Persephone, because she is one bad@$$ fighter! There were a few scenes that I screamed NOOOOOOOO, AND I'M STILL WAITING FOR IT NOT TO BE TRUE!There's just too many good things to say. Ending was not what I was expecting, but knowing it steered it into another direction makes it even better!

I have liked the pace and span of the books so far and, for the last book in the Hellequin series, I was looking forward to and expecting a ripping yarn with an extended climax.Instead, the story limped on with the creation of a large number of new super-characters, and petered out with a promise that us readers will get to read a new series.I am disappointed, and feel that the readers have been put second to the interest of the publishers in gaining maximum income from the Hellequin idea.

This book, while the last in the Hellequin series is so not the end! I am so excited for the next series in the story. Yes dome people don't make it and there were a lot of twists and turns and some really big surprises and upsets but DAMN WHAT A RIDE! I loved Nate and while I wasn't sure I could love Mordred....I do! Steve has quickly become one of my favorite authors and I will anxiously await the next step in the Avalon series.

This book is beautiful in so many ways. The photographs are sensational, and I love the format (not huge and glossy like some pretentious books). I recommend this book to anybody who loves flowers. So why only four stars? Because Amazon sent it in a lose envelope and it damaged the book in a way that I couldn't use it as a gift, and won't put it on the coffee table either.

This is a good quality text with a case study that goes throughout the book to explain techniques and concepts. Sturdy construction. Easy to read with plenty of examples and study questions. Summary at end of each chapter is useful, as are tables of statements with syntax and examples.

The book is clear and concise and the author explains well each one of the topics although at times I feel there should be at least two examples of something that is explained in a given chapter. Other than this I feel the book is easy to read for anyone whether you are a beginner, like myself, or an intermediate user both can benefit from reading this book. One think though I could never install the software in the companion CD for during the installation I ran into an error and then when trying to use SQL*PLUS I could not log in even though the user name and password were correct.

No bad. It is better is you have previous knowledge of SQL to understand better the exercises from this book.

Bought for a class I was taking. I still use it as reference material. Excellent guide.

I am a computer science student and this was a book for my course. I really enjoyed this book, the subject matter was presented in a conceptual manner with good examples. I have seen other books on the subject of SQL that just give you a bunch of facts and move on to the next subject. This book is not like that it flows though the subject matter and touches every fact completely before transiting to another subject. If you want to learn SQL i believe this book does an excellent job of it.

I was dubious about another thick, high cost textbook. I have enough incomprehensible database and SQL books - this text is different - it's so well written, it's understandable, the examples are useful, and the author points out all the little idiosyncrasies that trip up newbies. Highly recommend this book for anyone starting to learn SQL or who had trouble with SQL with another text. The datafiles on the companion website are easy to work with and it's a very practical, hands on text. Well worth the high cost.

I bought this as a textbook for a Database Programming course. All database concepts are explained concisely and effectively, and there are adequate challenges in the back of the chapters to test your knowledge. No complaints.

I bought this book for a college course I took last semester. I was brand new to SQL and programming in general, and this book made all the concepts very easy to understand for a beginner. I'd highly recommend this book if you want to learn SQL!

A lovely retelling of the beauty and the beast idea - from a daughter who gives up herself to save her father, to a castle cursed and filled with altered creatures. The author gives a nod to those versions that came before with chapter titles showing Disney's version and connecting to the Gaelic with a nod to King Arthur. The story progresses with both whimsy and precision. The word usage paints a picture of the metallic automatons and Isabelle's skill in tinkering. The author wrote Isabelle with a passion for understanding, from intricately engineered pieces to stories. Some foreshadowing early on leads to a delightful story line. I loved the druidic references and the Celtic figures with the Ogham scattered throughout the landscape to aid in the puzzle of the curse. Well written and worth your time. (I did find some chapter titles too much as they were just to give homage to a previous version of the story and not tied in to the story written here.)

What a wonderful story. While Beauty and Beastly may follow along the same lines of the classic Beauty and the Beast, it also has its very own unique spin that I absolutely loved! This one captured some of my favorite parts of in Beauty in the Beast. I really enjoyed the characters and the slight differences they have to their classic counterparts. I also liked how the romance was gentle and we didn’t have a mean and horrendous beast. I was really surprised with the way fairies and Celtic folklore played a major part with the islands curse. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book. It has a few characters that are in other books the author has written, which in my opinion is pretty cool! I can’t wait for the next one!I voluntarily received and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. Though I loved it so much I bought my own copy.Final Rating: 5 Stars

Who can resist the idea of a steampunk fairytale? What made Beauty and Beastly irresistible for me was that it was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast! First off, I will say that this story truly had the steampunk elements that it claims, it was so lovely! The occupants of the castle were once people turned into clockwork beings. I appreciated how the author introduced the idea of how time would affect clockwork creations, it added a touch of realism to a whimsical tale.The main character, Isabelle, was a unique character who truly grabbed my interest. She was a creator and her creations were beautiful but she was always looking to create something grander. I liked that she had substance, was ambitious, and had something to attract the Beast to her other than her beauty and sarcasm. There is a romance angle in this story, it was subtler than I was expecting but still nice. Beauty and Beastly was a memorable retelling and I loved all the unique touches that made this story standout.

This was set around The Beauty and the Beast and there were plenty of times that you saw the comparisons but it was also so very different.I loved the characters. Isabelle was a pretty young women who was a tinkerer. She created such beautiful pieces. They were described so that you could visualize them so realistically. When tragedy strikes and she ends up on a deserted island she soon learns it is not deserted. The inhabitants are not human but yet they seem so real. Soon Isabelle thinks there is more to their story and sets out to find the truth.This was a great read that combined a fairytale, steam punk, a touch of paranormal and a great story line. Once I started I could not put it down. I will be looking into more stories by this author.

I love Ms. Karsak's steampunk fairy tales and I can hardly wait to read her next steampunk retelling! She is simply amazing in creating these steampunk versions of well-known fairy tales and even though I know the ending from childhood, these reimaginings keep me turning the pages. I love reading the twists she gives the characters and the world around them. Simply brilliant!I highly recommend picking up this book and her Alice in Wonderland remake "Curiouser and Curiouser!"

This story was a nice retelling of a classic. I loved how the author added little touches from more traditional versions into this story and I slso loved this version of Isabella and her father. Gaston was translated into a "throw away" character in this story, as least for me, he could have been left out. I liked the steam-punk aspects and how the "beast" was protrayed. I will read more by this author; and it was a sweet story with little physical romance. I would consider it both safe and chaste.

Another winner from Melanie Karsak. This is a steampunk version. Isabelle (a character introduced in Ice and Embers) and her father are going to a wedding in Ireland but a terrible storm arises and the ship is wrecked. She is stranded on a small island and discovers a mansion where everything (even the gardens) is an automaton. From this point on, the story follows the plot of Beauty and the Beast.This is a fanciful and well written retelling of the fairy tale. I look forward to more retellings by Melanie

What a fun book! I enjoy good steampunk tales, and this one is excellent. The re-telling of the fairy tale is wonderfully creative, and I love the world it's set in. I've read a couple of the author's short stories that are also set in this world and loved those too. I'll be watching to find more of them as they're published.There are some editing blips, something I can't help but notice. But none of it was enough to detract from my reading enjoyment. Overall, this is a great book. Recommended for the sheer fun of it.
