About the Author

John Williams (1922–1994) was born and raised in northeast Texas. Despite a talent for writing and acting, he flunked out of a local junior college after his first year. He reluctantly joined the war effort, enlisting in the Army Air Corps, and managed to write a draft of his first novel. Once home, Williams found a small publisher for the novel and enrolled at the University of Denver, where he was eventually to receive both his BA and MA, and where he was to return as an instructor in 1954 and remain on the staff of the creative writing program until his retirement in 1985. During these years, he was an active guest lecturer and writer, editing an anthology of English Renaissance poetry and publishing two volumes of his own poems, as well as three novels, Butcher’s Crossing, Stoner, and the National Book Award–winning Augustus (all published as NYRB Classics). English Renaissance Poetry, edited by Williams, is also available from NYRB Classics.

It is almost impossible to believe that this is the same John Williams who wrote "Stoner," "Butcher's Crossing" and "Augustus." All those are fine, even extraordinary---in very different ways. This slim novelette is dreadful. A totally unconvincing exercise in ANGST that contains elements of J. Alfred Prufrock, Camus, and the pulp, noirish fiction of the 1930s and 1940s. It should be read only to see how far Williams traveled as a creative force from this pathetic effort to the masterpiece that is "Stoner." M. Stephen Miller

“Nothing But the Night” is a gripping existential tale of a man wrestling with the plagues of 20th (21st relevant as well) century consciousness, trauma, and depression. Although this book has been received as depressive, it is beautifully written, while interspersing a wide array of metaphors and symbolism revealing the human condition. Much like “Stoner” by John Williams, the protagonist of this tale goes through life as a participant rather than a go-getter. Stoner much like Maxley functions as a cog in the machine which is life, consciousness, and mere existence. With that said, Stoner and Maxley go about existence in very different ways. Stoner was likely written later in Williams career symbolizing Williams won maturity and growth as opposed to rebellion. “Nothing but the Night” is a must read for those John Williams enthusiasts longing to know a little more about “the best author you never heard of.”On a final note: I highly encourage the reader to examine to the very informative Q&A between interviewer and John William’s wife.***Spoiler***Although the ending has a cruel and unacceptable altercation, it can be taken as a metaphor of the danger of not having love, closure and acceptance in one’s life. Maxley is faced with an unforgettable tragedy (mom’s suicide & shooting of father) which alters his ability to experience connectivity with others. When the awful altercation happens between him and Claire, perhaps it is symbolic of his past haunting his present. While he is unable to rectify the death of his mother with his hatred unto his father, he ultimately cannot move forward with any form of love. In essence, Claire may not literally be a person he has met but rather a representation of him killing future prospects of romance and trust due to his past. The man beating him senselessly at the end, is a final symbol of the world and society’s punishment of being violent and ultimately a punishment of never letting go of the past.

This is a sad a short story, which I found not particularly well written or interesting in regards of the plot, but full of brilliant sentences, that made it worth reading. His egg makes him think of an evil eye and depressed by the little cafe and ends up back home, the windows in his building seeming to leer at him. Maxley's nerves are disturbed by memories. Everything he encounters is magnified in grotesque ways, like circus sideshow mirrors, reflecting his inner world.Every word in John Williams' novel Nothing Like the Night reveals Maxley's claustrophobic and overwrought psyche, the story culminating in the revelation of the horror Maxley witnessed and his irrational acting out of his trauma.Is this book by the same man who created William Stoner in Stoner, the novel so constrained and elegant, austere and yet moving? Both novels are dark, but Stoner's resolution is comforting in his final acceptance of his life. Night leaves the protagonist still lost in the dark. Violence becomes his speech and there is no health in him.Nothing But the Night was Williams' first novel, written during the war when he flew supplies "over the hump" and saw his fellow soldiers die. Only a mentor with a small press believed in him enough to publish this novel. Williams learned from his mistakes and went on to write "the perfect novel" Stoner and the National Book Award winner Augustus.It was fascinating to read this early novel, at once a failure and yet showing Williams ability with words and insight into human nature. This is a very complete book of the history from 30 AD going forward. Its a read that you set out on like a journey. Some days you read 10 pages and some days 20 but beyond that it takes time to assemble what was taking place shortly after the death of Christ. Its important to know as it leads into the discussions and theories of why in the 3rd century the collection of writings and readings became the bible. Read as many of the non books of the bible before you start this. It will give you a better back ground of the various views that were taking place and then read this so that you can grasp the history of the times.

Very pleased with this purchase. The book is a very interesting read. I loved the extra features provided, like tables that show you the parallel account in the Bible. A well constructed book too. Would definitely recommend if you have any interest in the Bible or Jewish history.

while a solidly bound book, and no doubt an authentic translation, it is translated in old English style, very difficult to understand for the modern English speaker. I would recommend other translations. my version sits unused as I order another of a modern translation.

He was a Jewish General feared and admired by his enemies, the Romans. When he was captured, calls for his execution went unheeded. He gave up the sword soaked in Roman blood to take up the pen of a historian. Some of his countrymen viewed him as a traitor.Within these pages are tales of intrigue in the royal courts, the madness of kings, the senseless slaughter of men, women and children, and interwoven with the great figures of history. Some passages are extremely long and border on tedium to the nth degree. However, even the tedium of details is worth the read.Other passages are just fascinating- Moses, the General of Egypt's army, wins a war against Ethiopians and marries Tharbis, Princess of Ethiopia. Their descendents would rule Ethiopia for centuries.There is a lot of sadness in these pages, especially the final destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. The Jewish nation was decimated in the first century.The last bastion of Jewish resistance was a thousand men, women and children who made their heroic stand against the approaching legions. The fateful decision by the leaders of Masada as the Romans prepared for the final assault will not only touch the heart, but it will reaffirm a basic principle of the human spirit- it is better to die free than become a slave of the oppressor.These stories and many others are found in these 1000 plus pages. This is a serious work for the equally serious reader.

I bought this for my Mother. I read a bit before I took it to her. I found it to be interesting not withstanding that I did not necessarily agree with his "take" on scripture.When Christians read this they need to understand that this will not necessarily be in agreement with traditional Christian views. None the less, it is a great insight to how the Hebrew people thought.I thought it was a very good historical view of Hebrew attitude and how it came about, at least from my Christian perspective. Knowing how people think helps to understand their reactions to others.There were alot of good footnotes that helps Christians understand the Hebrew line of thinking.I would recommend this highly to any one interested in history and understanding a different perspective on scripture.

I'm not quite sure how to place "The New Complete Works of Josephus" (Kregel Academic & Professional, 1999) among other editions of Josephus that are available.This work is a "revised" version of Whiston's 1737 translation, which has been "corrected" to an unknown degree by Paul L. Maier.Besides Josephus' writings, the book includes 7 "dissertations" on the text by Whiston such as "The testimonies of Josephus concerning Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, and James the Just, vindicated". These along with the footnotes reveal a translator anxious to defend the authenticity of his source text(s), the historical accuracy of Josephus, the correspondence of Josephus's accounts with the Old and New Testament, etc.Whiston seems to have a vested interest in Josephus as supporting and supplementing various Biblical accounts. He definitely comments upon the work from a Christian (he was actually an Arian) rather than a purely critical perspective. However, I see no reason at this time to believe this infects his translation with bias.Assuming that "Complete Works" has been completely corrected, it's greatest failing is being very difficult to read. Apparently, Whiston had something against periods, but really loved semicolons. Many a sentence runs on and on to paragraph length. The syntax is tortuous.The same publisher has two other editions of Josephus that are very different from Complete Works, yet seem very similar to each other. These are "Essential Works" (Josephus: The Essential Works) and "Essential Writings" (Josephus: The Essential Writings). Both are current editions using a translation by Paul L. Maier.The following is a sample of Maier's new translation followed by Whiston's. The text corresponds to Loeb Bk. VI, Ch. 14, 374-378From "Josephus: The Essential Writings", Kregel, 1990, ISBN 0825429641 (Maier translation)The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the bodies of the slain, they found those of Saul and his sons, and they cut off their heads and impaled their bodies on the walls of Bethshan. But when the Israelites of Jabesh-Gilead learned about this mutilation, the bravest of them marched all night to Bethshan, removed the bodies of Saul and his sons, and carried them to Jabesh, where they buried them. I can't personally vouch for them, but in the introduction to "Complete Works" Maier himself states that those represent the "best English translation".If you don't need each and every line and want text you can actually parse, perhaps you should buy "Essential Works" or "Essential Writings". I can't tell you which, since I don't have them and I'm mystified as to what the difference might be. Of course, there are other translations and editions from other publishers of repute that are certainly comparable in readability.If you need (or want) every line for a very economical price, "Complete Works" will do.Good luck reading it.

Carolyn Bernstein,M.D., is an assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and a staff neurologist at Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A board-certified neurologist, Dr. Bernstein belongs to the American Academy of Neurology. In 2006, Dr. Bernstein won the Harvard Medical School Faculty Prize for Teaching Excellence, and in 2007, she was the recipient of the Leonard Tow Award for Humanism in Medicine given by Harvard Medical School and the Arnold Gold Foundation. In 2007, she also won the National Headache Foundation's Headache Healthcare Provider of the Year. In 2006, Dr. Bernstein opened her own headache clinic for women, the Women's Headache Center at Cambridge Health Alliance.

I have been a migraine sufferer for many years and since I hit my 40's they have gotten so much worse been so disruptive to my every day life. I've pretty much tried every medication and therapy there is to try and I was and still am so frustrated at the inability to treat my migraines. However reading Dr. Bernstein's book was such an eye opener for me. I felt she had a true compassion and understanding for migraine patients and I was impressed at how she explained the migraine brain and what triggers migraines for so many people. She draws on her knowledge of so many years and gives examples of patients she has treated which really humanizes what so many migraine sufferers experience. It can be such an isolating condition to have, as many people who do not suffer from migraines cannot possibly understand how debilitating and disruptive they can be to your life. I am currently being treated at the Stanford Headache Clinic and even though they are probably one most well known institutions out there I don't feel that I got the same in depth explanations as to my condition EVER. I have kept a migraine diary for years and nobody at the clinic or even any of the many neurologists or doctors I have seen over the years have ever really took the time to review it. I had to figure out myself that my migraines were hormonally triggered and be my own advocate to try to find a solution to my problem. Popping different pills is not really the answer. Now after reading this book, I found I have a whole new set of knowledge that I can use to try to get past chornic migraines. So to all the migraine sufferers out there - I highly recommend this book!

I've had migraines for 15 years. I didn't learn anything new from this book, but I found it to be a realistic, practical guide for managing migraines. I appreciated the alternative treatments that were discussed, since I am currently pregnant and can't/won't take medications, and nothing I've tried ever really worked for me anyway. I've found that a dark room and an ice pack does wonders. I would have to disagree with the author about food triggers though... she asserts that a food is only a trigger if you get a migraine within 2 hours of eating it. I am definitely affected much longer than 2 hours after ingesting my triggers, can be up to 12 hours for me.

I've suffered from migraines for 25 years now. There's things in this book that I have never had my doctors or neurologists tell me. It explains so much! I've always felt that my migraines were linked to certain parts of my body, but doctors haven't listened to me. I found some helpful advice that I've been able to put to good use to reduce attacks and relieve pressure/pain. I've recommended it to my sisters who all also suffer from migraines.

Having lived with migraines for some time I have amassed a library of reference material to help me understand the condition. The book does a really good job at explaining what is going on in your brain and the treatments available. The chapters are well organized and one does not have to read the book in order to seek the information you need. Overall very satisfied with the purchase and this is one of the books I will maintain as an excellent resource.

I've had migraines most of my life, but until a few years ago, only occasionally, and with easily identifiable triggers. That changed, and migraines took over my life. After one particularly debiliating migraine, I knew I had to do something. I thought I understood migraines, but I realized how little I knew when I read this well-written and well-organized book. Got it first from the library, then ordered a copy for myself to study. I will be using it as a template as I work with my physician to develop a plan to manage my migraines, and hopefully return my life to something closer to normal. Dr. Bernstein wrote about migraine in ways that I immediately identified with, taught me many things about it I did not know, showed me how to keep a headache diary, and what signs to look for that could help me "catch" my migraines earlier, and thus minimize their impact on my life. The book explains about different types of medicine and other options for treatment, so that as my doctor and I develop my plan, I can be an informed participant. Already I have noticed some improvements, and have adapted the sample charts in the book for my own circumstances. Certainly, I am much more aware of what my body and brain are trying to tell me. It gives me optimism that my life can open up again. And it impressed my doctor that I had already begun keeping the kind of records he needs to help me sort things out!

Will finish reading it because I paid for it but not really a great book. It was just a continuous promotion of herself and the book. There were some good examples but I would definitely get something more current. The pharmacotherapy options in this book is already outdated.

Very informative book. Some of the information I was aware of, but there was much that I did not know. This is a very helpful book when getting ready for Dr. appointments. I sent copies to family members that also suffer from migraines. I'm very glad someone who suffers from migraines and also has the ability to write such a helpful book has taken the time to do so.

This is an absolutely fascinating book about a condition that has been a problem for most of my life. I have long felt that migraines almost had to be genetic, and here is proof. I have confirmed four generations, from my maternal grandmother to my mother, to myself and one of my daughters, who have all experienced these debilitating headaches. Very honestly, I would never wish this kind of pain on my worst enemy. It's just not a fun way to spend time.
