Kent Nerburn has written a powerful book that avoids the traps of a white guy writing about Indians and is true to both sides of the divide. He fulfilled his promise to Dan, the Lakota elder who was the reason for the whole project. It is Dan's book. Mr. Nerburn did his utmost to stay out of the way and tell a powerful and moving story. Being a white guy, Dan's assessment of white people often made me squirm. His anger is never far from the surface, but his intent was to inform, rather than shame. As white readers, we can assume the shame of genocide without his help. But feeling shamed isn't the issue. Catching a glimpse into the emotions of a culture Whites have done their level best to utterly destroy is something that should be taught in schools everywhere. People need to understand. In a nutshell, "Neither Wolf Nor Dog" nails the difference between White and Red: White people care about freedom; Red people care about honor. There is so much to be learned if we open our minds and our hearts. I don't think you can read this book without feeling a seismic shift in your core.

I really debated between four and five stars on this book. While my family ancestry is in part "Native American", it is also French enough to "hide" within the dominant Northern European culture in most of North America. My opinion is that because my family has never felt the sting of prejudice and oppression, I do not and have no right to claim "Indian-ness". This book deals with the still raw wounds inflicted upon upon not some vague "Native Americans" or "Indians of North America" but upon real people. In a very real and immediate way, Nerburn uses the words of Dan to confront a long history of oppression, murder, and genocide perpetuated on those who were here before the European invasion beginning in the 15th Century. I will admit that I put the book down and for awhile thought that I would not finish it. After a few weeks, I went back and finished the last two chapters and am very glad I did, so I suggest that you if you waver, stay the course and finish it. I am now reading the continuation of this story, the Wolf at Twilight.

I have been telling my friends about this book (and the two sequels--The Wolf at Twilight and The Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo). They are really important books for us all to read. Perhaps most of us already know that the early American Government essentially 'stole' the land from the Native American tribes who had been on the land for many many generations, and we have heard at least some of the stories of the bad events that went down. And many of us already know that the Native American ways are much more sensitive to the natural world than most of us are today... But Kent Nerburn's narrative gives a power and perspective to the 'facts' of the story. The story is told by Nerburn, the white 'outsider', and also through the eyes of Dan, the Lakota elder, who comes to trust Nerburn with his deepest observations and Native American perspective. I read the 3 books in quick succession. They are compelling books, and they will stay with me for a long time.

I was first introduced to Neither Wolf Nor Dog in a college history course about 15 years ago, have read it four times since then, and regularly recommend and gift it to other people. Over the last 10 years, I have continued to seek out and read almost every book written by Kent Nerburn: not one has disappointed. The two books that follow NWND, The Wolf at Twilight, and Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo add depth and extension of stories touched on in NWND. Each time I journeyed through this story with Nerburn, Dan, Grover, and Fatback, I emerged on the other side as a more fully developed human being. No other book I’ve discovered has been able to explore the conflicted relationship between white culture and native culture with such curiosity, integrity, and compassion. Nerburn is willing to literally take the back seat and allow his Indian elders to steer the story over often rugged and trackless terrain. His relationship with Dan, the Lakota elder, and the other native “characters” teaches us all about the necessity of taking a step back, silencing ourselves, and opening our lives and minds to another’s point of view, no matter how uncomfortable that may be. This book is able show the multitudes contained within Native America, dispelling the limited, static, and mythological stereotypes that only serve to bind us to a false narrative. Nerburn’s insightful, vivid, and lyrical prose consistently teaches me something new about the interconnectedness of all things and how to walk in beauty on this earth.

Excellent book, I Think it is best book I have read in years. I have always been interested in the Native American culture but this book gives me insight to how they feel. Dan provides personal insight to the Lakota people. The insight encompasses current and past and even a glimpse into the future of the Lakota. This book will draw out feelings good and bad and truly made me think or actually re-think my views. I loved reading this, the only complaint is that it had to end. Thank you Mr Nurburn for a wonderful book.

This book kept me engaged and thinking more than any book I can remember much like Ian Frazier's books. Kent Nerburn does a fantastic job of painting the picture of Indian life (good and bad) and conveying the beauty of the Lakota land and people. Dan's word prompted deep and lingering introspection of my own life. He highlights sacred ideas and traditions and contrasts that to the weak or non-existent cultural treasures of white society. I did grow weary of Dan's bitter attitude and constant berating of Nerburn, a white man like me who wishes to learn and appreciate the Lakota culture. I was hoping Dan would be more like Mr. Miyagi but his anger and frustration represents hundreds of years of abuse and is why the book is so powerful. Fortunately Grover and Jumbo added humor to the story. Overall it's an easy 5 star book that I will keep on my shelf. I'm looking forward to the movie as well as Nerburn's later two books on this topic.

For starters I do not subscribe to the overall theological approach to culture and Scripture from Wimberly. That being said there are some very good takeaways regarding the need for community and the value of story. In my opinion this is a work where you take what is valuable for you and toss the rest. Again, if you find yourself persuaded by Wimberly's view of culture and Scripture you will enjoy the work.

"African American Pastoral Care" is Edward Wimberly's 1991 "sequel" to his 1979 "Pastoral Care in the Black Church." In his newer work, Wimberly continues his important focus on sustaining, healing, reconciling, and guiding, while highlighting a new emphasis--pastoral care through narrative.Narrative therapy has been a growing model for at least two decades. Wimberly nicely blends the historical African American use of oral tradition with the insights of post-modern narrative therapy.In his introduction and first chapter, Wimberly concisely explains the nature of narrative story-telling in African American pastoral care. In each subsequent chapter, he demonstrates how this model can be used in various counseling issues such as addiction, bereavement, life stages, marriage, and family matters.Reviewer: Robert W. Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

I am not an African American pastor and so I struggle to truly grasp some of the issues Dr. Wimberly addresses that are specific to that community. However, this book has brought me closer to that understanding in a small way. In reading the book I have discovered many similarities between my community and Dr. Wimberly's, enough that I also find much in his work that has applicability in my white congregation. I am most grateful for the chapter on human sexuality. He has articulated views that closely parallel my own but in a much more succinct and understandable way than I have heretofore been able to do.

While reading through this book there were many ideas and experiences shared that I am sure will help us in certain areas of counseling others. However, there were also many thoughts that seemed as if they were only feasible actions in an African-American church, or that only African-American churches faced these issues. Overall, I was thankful for the insight and the knowledge I gained from the author's wisdom.

It was written with remarkable frankness by a genuinely gifted and precocious human being who experienced all of the typical anxieties of her adolescent contemporaries, although almost none of the non-Jewish Dutch teenagers of that era faced the peril of deportation and therefore subsequent death in one of Hitler's various German concentration camps or extermination centers in Nazi-occupied Poland. Anne's unique perspectives on daily life in the Netherlands while hidden away in an annex behind the office of a spice warehouse, provides the historic backdrop of what it must have been like for the hundreds of thousands of Jews in Occupied Europe who hid from the Nazis during the Second World War. She remains Adolf Hitler's most famous victim, first among legions of legendary, historic martyrs and heroes.

In this book the editors have selected thirty-one excerpts from various writings about Anne Frank and collected them together under four basic ideas: Anne's life, Anne as a writer, Anne on stage & screen and Anne in relationship to the Holocaust. Overall the selection of the writings is very good. They are of high quality and of varying points of view, particularly with reference to the last three sections of the book.For example, there is considerable difference of opinion to Anne's ability as a writer, some find her skills exceptional while others think her ability overrated despite her impact. Better known are the arguments over whether the play and movie produced from Anne's diary truly reflected the "real" Anne. Then there are the arguments, growing in recent years, as to whether Anne's diary is an "accurate" or "important" portrayal of the Jewish experience during the Holocaust. I may not agree with Lawrence L. Langer's assessment that the diary is not a "vital text" of the Holocaust but seeing his point of view allows me to think a little deeper about my own position. And therein lies the book's real strength.Ultimately, though the excerpts are brief and it's easy to plow through them rather quickly, this book can open one's eyes. Some of the material I had read before in other places but I was very glad to encounter the wide points of view that the editors were able to gather. The fact that Anne's single work still has the power to generate such scholarship 60 years later seems to point out its continuing importance in our experience.

As part of my effort to learn my role as the dentist in the 1955 version of the play at the local junior college, I read some 14 or 15 books by and about Anne Frank and this one capped my study quite nicely. I recommend it as the one to read after "The Definitive Edition" (or the fascinating "Critical Edition", if you're up to that), Willy Lindwer's "The Last Seven Months", Melissa Muller's "Anne Frank: The Biography", Miep Gies' "Anne Frank Remembered", and Eva Schloss' "Eva's Story". It's scholarly, well edited and footnoted, and has a fine bibliography.
