These 50 people showing 50 awesome examples of the power everyone has in him or herself. Beside that, the author ended every story with a personal note to the reader. "Did you know that...? I'm glad that this book features the stories of so many black history makers we don't often hear about instead of the same old famous figures. I had never heard of some of them like Mark Dean, Christopher Gardner, Leanna Archer who made (like the title says) amazing contributions to the world .... I'm getting another copy of this book as a gift for my grandchild. I got the Kindle version - but I'm getting the hard copy too because the colorful illustrations make this book really beautiful. It'd be a great gift or coffee table book as well.

A beautiful collection of short accounts of 50 legendary Black people, not JUST Americans, who have been influential in the history of the world. Each includes a positive affirmation and opens the door to conversations every parent should have with his/her child about the world and how to act and react to social injustices. This book should be read by people of every skin color.

This book was a great buy. It’s actually the first book that I can read to my kids that is not all fanciful and imaginary. The book is extensive and has many easy to read stories of heroes in black history. Each personality is summed up in 1-2 pages and the ideas that are found in the writings give the impetus to discuss and teach a lot of points of morality and inspiration to the kids. The funny thing is that I bought it for my kids but ended up learning a lot myself. An excellent buy.

I love reading this at night with my daughter. It has unexpected people diverse fields and after every person it has encouraging words.

This book of bedtime stories is the perfect thoughtful, educational gift that will elevate the way a child dreams! I love that each story is written in a conversational tone, with moments built-in to check in with your child and draw them into the narrative by asking questions they can answer as you read together. And the way that it clearly defines terms so often thrown around (from leadership to respect to heroism), is refreshing and instructive - both for children and the grownups reading with them.

My five year old and I have really enjoyed this book so far. However, the wording in the dedication at the front I thought was a little negative. It's dedicated to everyone who has ever been told they couldn't make it and had their dreams crushed or something like that. Which is fine. And as a person who has, I appreciate that. I just prefer things to be worded in the affirmative in stories designed for kids. After all, even kids who have never had their dreams crushed outright need positive role models and uplifting messages. And you don't have to have had that happen to you to find inspiration in the stories. I thought it was a really dark note on which to start out such a positive collection of success stories.

This book offers a great selection of black heroes who serve as an inspiration to the next generation. I feel my children can really learn a lot from this book. Thankfully, they were really into it the first few nights that we read to them. And they really love the positive affirmations at the end of the book. Theses stories definitely will help their self-esteem and their pride in their history and in their culture. Great job by the author.

Agatha Christie made no bones about it. "I have always hated _The Mystery of the Blue Train_." (_An Autobiography_, 429). "I had no joy in writing, no elan... and the people would not come alive... I cannot say that I have ever been proud of it" (429). _The Mystery of the Blue Train_ (1928) was her sixth Hercule Poirot mystery-- it was immediately preceeded by _The Big Four_ (1927)-- and was written when she was suffering from a writer's slump. She was also being interrupted during the writing of the novel. But I am in agreement with Robert Barnard. Christie may have disliked the novel, but it is far from her worst piece of writing._The Big Four_ was a rather dismal spy melodrama. _The Mystery of the Blue Train_ is a return to what Christie does best-- the formal detective story. This time, a plot is set in motion around a set of dazzling rubies on the black market. They come into the hands of a tough, hard-boiled American millionaire but are wanted by a ruthless, continental jewel thief. His first attempt to hijack them in Paris goes askew. We also meet the millionaire's spoiled, iron-willed daughter (for whom the jewels are intended), her estranged and indolent husband, his troublemaking dancer mistress, and the daughter's oily Old Flame with whom she plans to elope. Other characters include the efficient male secretary to the millionaire, the maid to the millionaire's daughter, a saintly companion who has recently come into money, her conniving distant cousin, and her cousin's honest and sharp-tongued daughter.Some of these characters board the luxurious Blue Train from Paris to Nice-- along with M. Hercule Poirot. There is a particularly brutal murder _en route_ that turns out to be more complicated to solve than it first appeared. Clues are misleading, stories shift about, and prime suspects change over time. Poirot enlists the aid of one of the passengers to help him solve the mystery.I don't think that it is giving too much away to say that in this novel, appearances can be deceiving. Sometimes what we _think_ we are witnessing is not what is actually happening. But I am betting that even armed with this information, the author will still fool the reader. Incidently, while this is purely a Poirot mystery, it is the first novel that introduces the village of St. Mary Mead-- Miss Marple's home town.

I heartily disliked Agatha Christie's 1928 Poirot novel, "The Mystery of the Blue Train: Hercule Poirot Investigates (Hercule Poirot series Book 6)." Poirot, himself, doesn't make an appearance until after the first 25% of the book, and, in general, most of the story revolves around the petty, crass, self-centered lives of the hoity-toity aristocrats making up the cast. To make things even worse, Poirot has absolutely no evidence to back up his "solution" at the end. Heck, he doesn't even get a confession. He could have just as well said space aliens beamed down from outer space and committed the murder and it would have been just as plausible. So, I'm rating the book at a Pretty Bad 2 stars out of 5.

"The blue train" is an absolute delight and it goes straight to my personal top favourite Poirot mysteries..My enjoyment with Christie's Poirot novels always, always comes from the characters, their history, their reactions. It also comes from the rich accounts of the behaviours and customs characteristic of any milieu Christie chooses for her stories. If the revelation of the culprit is sometimes part of the pleasure, most of the time, like here in "The blue train", it almost doesn't matter to me - because everything that leads to it is such a delight.

This book was just plain boring. I'm an Agatha Christie fan, and don't know how I'd overlooked this book, but I was disappointed in it from beginning to end. Wouldn't recommend it.

You would think after having read a number of her novels, I would not be so surprised about how brilliantly crafted they are but I never fail to be amazed, and Hercule Poirot is such treasure I never get tired of him. The novel occurs on the speeding Blue Train which is the Calais-Paris-Nice Express whisking well heeled folks on their way to a fun-filled winter in the paradise of the French Riviera. The plot involves the theft of the pricless Heart of Fire necklace and the murder of the adultery minded Katherine Kettering. She is seeking divorce from her playboy money worshipping cad of a husband . Her father the millionaire Rufus Van Allen has given her the necklace as a gift. Ruth is murdered by stragulation on the Blue Train; Hercule Poirot is there to assist French police in the solving of the crime. Katherine Grey also assists in unmasking the murderer. Katherine is an attractive woman who has inherited a fortune from an old lady she had served as an aide while living in St Mary Mead. The book reads quickly and is filled with fascinating characters such as:Comte Armand De La Roche-the lover of Katherine Kettering.Derek Kettering-the husband of Katherine and a man infatuated with lovely ladies. This is more of a notice than a full review. There are recipes for pork, lobster and shellfish in this book, so be aware if you think this is a kosher book. I didn't take off a star for that. I took off a star, because I found what appears to be at least one mistake during a cursory examination. The recipe for gefilte fish states in the introduction that the author adds smoked whitefish to add texture and taste; however, there is no mention of smoked whitefish in the ingredient list or the instructions. I was disappointed with that, because I was looking forward to something different. Otherwise, the pictures look nice, and I think I would try a couple of the recipes.

What a disappointment. Perhaps the restaurant these chefs own has fabulous food but this cookbook is a total waste. Many pages of less than stellar photography. I guess using typewriter print is supposed to be artsy but its unattractive and difficult to read. Seems like they were trying to fill lots of pages with not a wealth of original or interesting recipes. Layout is not useful. Obviously how the recipes would be used was not taken into consideration. The book looks like it was put together by grade school children.
