This type of puzzle is so hard to find in stores and me and my daughter love them. It has allowed us to spend some fun quality time together. WE LOVE IT!!!

BLANCHE MCCRARY BOYD has taught at Connecticut College singe 1982. She has written four novels―Terminal Velocity, The Revolution of Little Girls, Mourning the Death of Magic, and Nerves―as well as a collection of essays, The Redneck Way of Knowledge. Among the awards Boyd has won are a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fiction Fellowship, a Creative Writing Fellowship from the South Carolina Arts Commission, and a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Creative Writing from Stanford University.

The timing of Boyd's novel was just so exquisite, whether intended or fortuitous. As the convoluted workings of racism and white supremacy is no longer under the radar, she masterfully breaks down the relentless drive and historical connections that make its continued existence painfully real. What's even more fascinating than the mystery of hate in perpetuity, which the main character Ellen must endure over and over, as she wrestles with her sobriety, is the insatiable drive to reconnect with family no matter how derelict or how vicious the betrayal of legacy as the venom infects the brain as well as the blood. Brava!

what a wonderful, important and timely read: i am savouring every well-researched word. my only regret is that ms. boyd isn't more prolific, as i am pretty certain that I have read every single one of her published works.

This novel sucked me in immediately, just as the events of the plot capture the protagonist, Ellen. It's a fast-paced journey through beauty and discomfort, knowledge and ignorance, love and hate, strength and desperation, guilt and forgiveness... I'm so glad I read this novel, and, without spoilers, I just want to say that several of the scenes and characters will haunt me in the best way.

Good, complex story. Touches on issues that our country is dealing with more and more today. I wish the author would have omitted some of the graphic sexual scenes as I found them unnecessary and forced. Otherwise, I found the characters to be well-written and the story enjoyable.

Read this & Blanche’s 2 previous novels, “The Revolution of Little Girls” and “Terminal Velocity.”

What a ride - this book is a trip....perfect tale so descriptive and apropos of current affairs. A real treat from Blanche Boyd!

A page turner! A fascinating look at the history of white supremacy in the US. I loved the main character. Very authentic and original voice and a plot that was a real page turner. Highly recommended.

This book is a blast. All of the "editorial reviews" above are accurate for me! I would add that the book draws the reader in to its (very flawed, oh-so-human) protagonist's gradual understanding of extreme white nationalism -- as she tracks down her brother, part of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and terrorist murder of 168 Americans. Historically, that bombing was the peak of a militarized phase of white nationalism -- now on the rise again, as through Atomwaffen Div (see film series Documenting Hate on PBS). Through a network of caring acts spiked with bold daring, the novel worms its way to face the values and commitment of racist extremism -- a journey that all concerned readers need to take today. AND, yes, the book is a fun and engaging read. Also apprecited the other two books in this trilogy. Thank you, Blanche Boyd, for an honest, modern book about our national identities told through warm, human relationships.

My 7 year old daughter absolutely loves this book. Despite having a high level of reading ability, she's been resistant to reading for pleasure. This book has snapped her out of her rut and brought enjoyment back to reading. She tore through this book in one evening and laughed nearly the whole time. The grammar is not the best, which bothers me, but this is a book that keeps my daughter's interest so I'm willing to overlook it.

My son loves this Author. This is a funny comic strip ttpe of book and has some flip-o-ramas that my son (10) likes to do. He is at the age where some things he finds to kid-ish but he still loves all the series by this Author. Also has some pages where it teaches you to draw a couple different characters step-by-step. So, pretty cool book overall.Hardback, and lots of vibrant colored pictures from front to back of this book! Attached pictures My son can't wait till part 2 comes out! :)

My son read this in about two hours - he couldn't put it down - so nice to see him stuck in a book. Looking forward to more in the series!

It is so good. I am almost eight and I really like this series. It is new. It makes me laugh.

My 8 year old didnt want this book but now its his favorite

Not so much that I, an adult, love it, but the kids I tutor in English love it. There are a multitude of black and white simple and comical sketches and loads of funny situations kids can connect with. The only thing I wish were different is that there is a lot of slang, along with some vulgarities of the sort that appeal to kids, and the language is not very good. You would hope, if your child spoke that way, that he/she would grow out of it. However, since the story is narrated by one of the kids in it, this may be unavoidable and one of the book's charms (for kids), rather than a fault. For kids who are native speakers surrounded by adults speaking properly, the errors wouldn't matter.That said, the learning "benefits" of the books in this series pale in comparison with the natural, yet accurate, not-vulgar, correctly-spelled, and often useful vocabulary in the conversations in all the Calvin and Hobbes books. Nevertheless, no matter how good and nutritious a food may be, if a person doesn't enjoy eating it and won't eat much, it won't help him, right? So I am grateful just to have something that a reluctant ESL pupil enjoys reading! For that purpose, fortunately or unfortunately, it is the books in this series that fill the bill. This was not our first, and we will probably be buying and reading more of them.
