I have been intrigued by the life of one our greatest founding fathers, the first Treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton. This is a historical based novel on the life of Alexander Hamilton from early childhood, his relationship with his wife Elizabeth Schuyler, his indiscressions and untimely death premature death at the hands of this nation's third Vice President, Aaron Burr. The book is well researched. Her writing style is entertaining and easy to follow.

Alexander Hamilton – the nation’s first Treasury Secretary and a man extremely reviled. A man that had become more of a footnote in history – other than his notorious death by Aaron Burr – until a Broadway musical became a smash hit and revived interest in this “soldier, thinker, statesman”. In “The Hamilton Affair”, Elizabeth Cobbs has created a novel as fascinating as Hamilton was, and one that sheds light on his unique place in history.I confess – I was initially attracted to this book because of all the brouhaha about the musical. I was curious about the man that inspired such a massive hit, and knew little about him from my high school history classes. I prepared myself for a boring affair that I hoped might enlighten me a bit – what I got was a well-done and extremely interesting book about both Hamilton and his wife Eliza. Both viewpoints are covered in this book, and Cobbs takes great care to try and do justice to both. While the book portrays Hamilton in a positive light, and attempts to demonstrate just how unjust the characterization of him has often been, it also does not shy away from the damage he caused his wife and his family.Regardless of one’s feeling about the man as a whole, it is undeniable that both he and his wife accomplished some amazing things in their lifetimes. Creating the Treasury department from the ground up, ensuring veterans were able to get back pay after the war that created our nation, and even the creation of the first private orphanage in New York – these things and many more can be attributed to these amazing individuals. Sadly, Hamilton never got a chance to tell his own story, and it appears that he truly gave his life in service of his country – for it was in that service that he made so many enemies, one of whom eventually killed him.Overall, I really think this is an excellent book. It’s a great place for Hamilton newbies (like myself) to begin, and might even have a unique perspective on the man for those more familiar with him than myself. I highly recommend this book, and – as my highest praise – it has given me the desire to research its subject even more thoroughly than before.

Okay where to start... This book had me hooked from chapter one. If you love the "what are men to rocks and mountians" sass of Elizabeth Bennet, you are going to love Elizabeth "Eliza" Hamiliton, and if you believe true love stories should be more complicated than "they met, fell in love, and lived happily ever after", then you're going to love this book even more.I was hesitant to jump on the Hamilton craze that has followed the Broadway play, for fear that it wouldn't live up to its expectations, but this book was the perfect start to my new love affair. The Hamilton Affair shows that life and love aren't always pretty, but you can either choose to sink into it's shallows, or stand up and hold strong. If you are reading these reviews to decide if this book is worth it, please just click buy! I promise it will be worth it!

Although I’m not a fan of historical fiction, I took a chance on The Hamilton Affair by Elizabeth Cobby through Amazon Vine as Alexander Hamilton is one of my favorite Founding Fathers. I was pleasantly surprised that this novel was so well-researched and well-written. One observation, however, is that I thought The Hamilton Affair was going to be primarily about Hamilton’s affair with Maria Reynolds, which brought such tragic consequences. But the Reynolds’ affair doesn’t come into play until over halfway through the novel. With the Hamilton craze happening right now because of the hit musical by the same name, The Hamilton Affair covers well-known territory. The viewpoints alter between Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler, who he will marry in 1780. The Hamilton Affair follows the timeline of Hamilton’s life fairly faithfully from the time of his early childhood in the Caribbean to his death at the hands of Aaron Burr in a duel in 1804. Cobby uses letters, newspaper accounts, and journal entries to flesh out the story. She also adds some fictional characters, including Ajax Manley, a black Revolutionary War soldier who will become great friends with Hamilton and his family. Cobby doesn’t go into great detail about many aspects of Hamilton’s life, but she does try to show you what she felt both Hamiltons were thinking and feeling throughout their lives and especially, in their marriage. Maybe the author comes close to what actually happened, and maybe not. But she certainly helps us visualize what might have been. One thing that was especially disturbing is how toxic the political situation was during Hamilton’s life. We may think that 2016 is pretty bad, but we have nothing on the infighting between Hamilton, Jefferson, Monroe, Madison and Burr. The very sad part about Alexander Hamilton’s life is that because he was killed so young, those who outlived him have written their version of history, negating the genius of Hamilton and his wonderful contributions to our country. It has taken 212 years after Hamilton’s death, but he’s finally getting his due.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Hamilton Affair. Though the title indicates it's about the Affair, it's really about the truly remarkable and misunderstood man, and his much loved wife, Eliza. Would that there were more love "affairs" of this nature today! Surviving an illicit affair is devastating to the best of marriages between flawed humans. Surviving also the senseless death of a child as well? Only by God's grace and much forgiveness could that be possible!

What a wonderful action packed series!! I was a little saddened that Owen had grown up so much, but the adventure and peril proved to be all the more interesting. I also wanted to point out that this series has no sex or swearing in it, which is unusual to me, but the books are so well written that they don't feel lacking. There is still love, romance and hostility it's just clean, it was honestly refreshing. Anyways, the perspective is from the main character Owen. His age has increased from eight, in the first novel, to 17. He is the duke of his childhood estate and is "fountain blessed". Through the book Owen and king Severn try to thwart Severn's "nephew" from unlawfully taking the throne. Owens loyalty, integrity, self control and fountain blessed gifts are constantly tested, but through it all he prevails. Kudos to the author for conjuring up "being fountain blessed", the idea of random people being born with gifts that are replenished through corresponding personal idiosyncrasies is brilliant. I seriously love these books and highly recommend them to anyone looking for a hero who actually deserves to be idolized. Super excited for more!

I like this book and I'm an avid reader, I'm 60 an have been reading books since I was 3, the only changes are my glasses...I love historical non fiction, try to find non biased also, I love Literature, I love DEAN R KOONTZ he turned me on to the non snooty books, I totally dislike Stephen king and I believe he's a serious head case with a grudge against children.I like this book I like this author, he's original and you don't find that a lot. I read the last series and liked them very much and was surprised in places which is hard to do to me.So if you want to read a book written by a person I'd do lunch with this is the guy...

Wow!I couldn't seem to put this down, and within less than 24 hours I was finished. This is the second book in the Kingfountain series, and it does not suffer from the slump that many times can plague the middle book in a series. I was a bit hesitant when I heard that the book was staged 9 years after the previous novel. Would Jeff Wheeler be able to show a more grown up version of the characters that I had grown to love from the first book. I need not to have worried so. The characters seem to have matured well, and in a manner that is completely believable. They are not the same, and even though Owen, the main character, is not so shy, he still remains true to who he is. Even Severen, who I really want to hate, I find myself pitying him and his situation, even as he is caught up in his downward spiral towards ignominy. You can see the history background in evidence as this book often will read like a historical fiction. Unlike many fantasy series there isn't some ultimate evil. There are a lot of people with differing motivators and life experiences and they interact in ways that are totally believable, even if we as an audience are frustrated by what they are doing. This novel made me think on the motivations of others, on loyalty, on love, and on betrayal. It is a well paced story that keeps you strung along from one piece of action to the next with plenty of intrigue and even moments to just ponder on the implications of all that is happening. I am waiting expectantly for the next book in this series. I have read almost all of Jeff Wheeler's series. This is definitely the best of them so far. Wheeler has earned a spot on a short list of authors, that I will pre-order all of their books, knowing that they will be well worth the price.

When I was a child, my brothers, my father, my friends, and I all read The Lord of The Ring. When my children were old enough, I indoctrinated them in the same pleasures. When The Lord of The Ring movies started coming out a couple years later, my middle school aged children, my young adult to middle aged siblings, and my father, as well as I myself, were all beside ourselves, just beside ourselves, when we realized that Peter Jackson was bringing JRR Tolkien's world alive on the silver screen. We've all been gamers when there's time and readers even when there isn't, and the one constant in our world the whole time has been that we share good books when we find them. Well, friends, the Kingfountain series was a find of mind and I'm very excited to be sharing it with my family and friends. The writing is excellent, the characters come alive, and the story is thrilling. The series starts with the early lives of significant people who have an impact in the flow of history and it builds from book to book, interwoven into a like tapestry. It's truly a pleasure to read. I can't recommend this book, this series, or this author enough. Enjoy.

This sequel to the The Queen's Poisoner, book 2 of the Kingfountain trilogy, continues the story, 10 years later. Owen and Evie have matured and taken up their roles in the aristocracy. This makes the book more political than the first, as a threat to King Severn comes from his past, or at least from tales told of his past. The Thief's Daughter is not a bad book, but suffers from being the second book in a trilogy (making a charitable assumption). Many of the characters, including Owen and most of the women in the story, lose significant agency relative to the first book. I suspect in Owen's case this reflects plot elements in service to the arc of the trilogy, but it grated nonetheless. My bigger criticism is that major developments, both of plot and character, happen out of Owen's (the sole perspective character) view. Developments that should have been shown were told, and often told too briefly for their impact on the story to be properly appreciated.I still plan to read The King's Traitor, the conclusion of the trilogy, but with less enthusiasm for the prospect.

Explorer Ferdinand Magellan risked everything to find Indonesia's fabled Spice Islands and their abundance of cloves, pepper, and nutmeg. He left his native Portugal to lead a fleet of five ships under the banner of Spain, subjecting his family to mistreatment back home. He eventually lost his life and the lives of many of his crew members, but his belief in sailing west to find the East was vindicated. Laurence Bergreen's account of Magellan's historic journey reads with the excitement of a novel backed by painstaking detail. Bergreen's reading, which at times sounds like a college lecture, doesn't match the passion of his writing, but the story of Magellan's journey still makes this a compelling audiobook. This is one of two books about Magellan and his epic voyage. The other is Manchester's "A World Lit Only by Fire." Foir anyone with enough interest in the subject to read either book, I would recommend both. This book deals almost exclusively with the voyage, which after considerable haggling to get financing, began with five very small (by today's standards) leaky, under-equipped, clumsy, floating torture chambers, into which 250 men and some provisions were packed; and ended with two of the ships seprately limping back to Spain with only 18 of the crew still alive,Magellan having been killed in the Philippines, probably because he at some point during the voyage fell captive to the illusion of immortaltiy, and involved his beleaguered crew in an impossible battle with a native army.As one of the earlier reviewers observed, this book would have been improved by providing more information about the times. There is, after all, only so much that can be said about trying to cross the Pacific Ocean without any maps and limited supplies of food, water, and, most important of all, no understanding of the need for Vitamin C.At the same time, the Manchester book spends an enormous number of pages describing in great detail hat horrible conditions of Europe and the Papacy during this time. Despite several history courses that should have left me at least vaguely aware of how bad things were then, I was astonished at the picture he painted. At such length that by the time he got to Magellan's voyage, it seemed almost an afterthought.Of the books, overall I enjoyed "Edge of the World" more, but I learned more of value from Manchester's book.

This is definitely not the story you were taught in school. Over the Edge of the World by Laurence Bergreen is a powerful page turner of the true story of what Magellan and his crew went through just to find nutmeg and cinnamon. Many of the men brought back to life in Bergreens book are worthy of books just on their own stories. The desperation and solitude, cut off for months at a time without seeing another single human being is enough to make the most dedicated introverts among us cringe. The men on Magellan's armada had no idea what they would come across. Boiling water at the equator? Magnetic islands that could pull nails from the ships if they got too close? If you have a curiosity of how soft the comforts of our modern society has made us, look no further than this book. What these men endured and sacrificed for, the things that you can easily find on the grocery store shelves is mind boggling.

Excellent! Well written, interesting and comprehensive. The author states that Magellan was and still is controversial, however, he does not seem controversial to me aside from his possibly ill-considered decision to engage in a fight with the natives in the Philippines which went awry and in which he was killed. This book is a fitting testimony to this man and the explorers of that time who ventured into the unknown in their tiny and frail wooden ships to extend knowledge of the world. Were they flawed? Of course. Aren't we all. What is important is that enterprising spirit which was and still is very important to the human quest for knowledge. Bergreen's book is a fitting reminder of this.

After reading All the journals of Captain Cooks Voyages, the Journal of Joseph Banks on Cooks first voyage, all of the Antarctic explorers, was looking forward to Magellan’s Voyage. However, in my opinion it is very poorly written and put together. Numerous “sidebars” where author just goes off on an entirely different tangent, happens so frequently was a pain to read, when you just wanted the voyage, diaries of crew, etc.Very slow going read. Compared to the Author : Joan Druett, Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World, a true story, this book about Magellan’s voyage is really TERRIBLE.This author doesn’t have a clue about how to tell a story or even how to organize it. With all the research he says he did, the book does not reflect it!I will not be buying any more books by this author, Laurence Bergreen again. I’d get a refund if I could! Waste of money.

Absolutely wonderful book that will make a great coffee table book. The pictures are absolutely stunning! In this book you will find tips on plants, placement, styling, and some of the tools you will need to start you off on your adventure. The book shines the spotlight on people who are absolutely passionate about plants and gardening, both in- and out-doors; you will get a glimpse into how they incorporate plants into their homes and work space and are even introduced to a family who has been living in a green house! The tone of the book is one of gentle encouragement, as you can "start small and build up your confidence."

I love this book !!The stories,The pictures just the whole package. This is an excellent book. I am so happy that I purchased it. I am so inspired .

Absolutely wonderful book. Great photos! Perfect for a gardener and those who want to be!

I thought this was a terribly put together book. Layout didn't make any sense. A few nice pictures but no information about what you're looking at or depth into the topics or places featured. I got nothing from this book. It felt like a rush job to cash in on plants being trendy. Very disappointing.
