It feels really good to have a hefty neuro anatomy textbook without having to really take a class for it. Over 500 pages for only $12.00!! What a steal! And this book is a textbook I'm not kidding, Joe explains EXTREMELY thoroughly each and every part of the brain down to the ions smallest bits of the brain so that you the reader can have an understanding on how the brain works. You have to know the tools yours using if you want your car fixed, right? Right?

Overall this is a pretty interesting book. I kept waiting for more information on how to use the information in a practical manner but it didn't really seem to divulge much toward that end. However, it is a great laymen's review of current understanding of how the brain works, and I found it extremely Illuminating and well written. Only thing is it seems to promise information of how to harness the knowledge and help in a personal way. I don't really get much of that from this book. But I will continue to look for books by this author as I learned quite a bit and enjoyed reading it.

An interesting read. The author would not be considered an expert on the brain by many, but that probably makes his writing more accessible to the lay person. The chapter on cellular chemistry was the big reveal for me, since I was looking for the "why" of forming and breaking habits.

I like that this book explained the science behind rewiring neural pathways in the brain while also dividing the information up into sections that made it easier to grasp. I like the authors tone, verbiage and thoughts- the way he expresses himself- I can feel the excitement and passion in his writing, as well as his wealth of knowledge and wisdom in the subject. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for meaning in their life, those with chronic illness, those with mental impairments (anxiety, depression, PTSD, etc) and anyone looking to improve their outcome in life. I also recommend this book to anyone who is participating in a neural Retraining program/exercises.

A mind-changing book that can most probably change lives, if one is willing to put in the time and effort. Opened my eyes to the real power of the human brain. Nine-year old enjoys this series. He likes the characters. The books prompt some discussions of a variety of content because the settings vary widely. This one has a ghost, hotel, dumbwaiter, actors and attempted unethical business deal. It's a decent read. In the A to Z series, I prefer The Invisible Island, The Mayflower Treasure Hunt, and the The Sleepy Hollow Sleepover. Oh, and the one about the mummies. The Haunted Hotel is good, but I like some of the others better because the kids get into more dangerous predicaments.

My son loves these books. Great read for him. He's 8. It holds his attention. He reads it from cover to cover at one time. As a parent it's great to have a child that loves to read. I would recommend this book.

My first grader and I are reading this together. There's a lot of difficult words in it that he can't quite read yet so I definitely have to help him with it however it's pretty simply written and he likes zombies!

My second grade son started reading this series of books when he made the move to chapter books. They are not as difficult as Hardy Boys and are a very fun easy read. There are a few illustrations sprinkled throughout the book which my son really enjoys.I would consider a set if you are going to buy these as a gift.

I thought that this would have more information in about activities, etc. like kayaking or walking tours. However, I didn't find that the book has very much information about different types of outdoor activities and getting around. Also, the type is very big. I suppose that is helpful for people with bad eyesight, but it didn't make me happy. I prefer a smaller book with more information like Lonely Planet. The reviews of the hotels seemed to be biased. The thing that I liked about this book was that it had interesting review of the Grand Etang park.

My 17 month old has recently taken an interest in anything to do with animals, so when I saw this book, I decided to give it a try so I could read/show it to him and show him what the animals look like when they're young. Overall, I am pleased with the book especially given that right now, it's free.Pros:- It has 50 pages of baby animals from dogs, to horses, to rabbits; even to turtles. The baby animals facts are short (it just says what the animal is called as a baby), but it's intended for children, so that's ok.- The pictures of animals are close up shots. Some of the books i've been reading to my son show the animal at a distance, or with other animals. This book, however, shows each animal solely so your child can easily distinguish which animal it is.- It's a super easy read. If your kids are like my son, they're constantly throwing a book in your lap to read. I can zip through this book in about 4-5 minutes flat, getting it out of my son's blood for about an hour.- You may actually learn something as an adult. There were several animals in this book that I had no idea what they're classified as when they're young. For instance, I never knew a baby horse was called foal.Cons: (none. for the price, you really can't gripe about this book)To my 17 month old son, this book is awesome as he can see many different baby animals in a different light from his other animal books. I would recommend this book to any parent looking to entertain their child with something other than a television.

I got this book to read to my kids (5, 3 & 2). I liked the idea of the book, and thought that they would enjoy the shadow animals to guess what animal they were.I think the idea of the book is that the pages open up and on the right side, it has the shadow shape of an animal and on the left, 3 choices for what animal it is. Then on the following 2 pages, it shows a color picture and lists several facts about each animal.Unfortunately, this only followed through the first several animals. After that, the pages open up and it has the color picture on the facing page to the shadow picture. And then it just gets a little jumbled after that. Still the same order, but the shadows sometimes appear on the left side, or the right side, and the facts go through a page turn, etc. As if a page break is missed here and there and it doesn't follow through quite right.My 3 year old was able to very quickly identify the shadow shapes, without needing the choices (except for the shark, I think he thought it was a fish, but when given the choices chose the shark, which I thought was impressive. I thought he would get stuck on what he thought it was and not be able to change his mind).The color photos are nice quality.I learned several facts about different animals in this book. I think at least 1 new thing for each animal listed. Which I was surprised by. I think the facts are terrific and unique (I just trusted them and haven't done any further research, which I may do if using the book in our homeschool lessons).

I ordered this “Baby Animals Galore For Kids: Picture Book for Children” Kindle Edition for my 2 year old daughter. It is exactly what it says it is. It is a picture book, with only a few words, which is absolutely perfect for her. There are enough words to keep her attentive and focused, but more pictures, which is what she really loves, especially for a 2-year-old, who has a harder time listening to all the words in some books. This is perfect for her age and would also be perfect for young readers. It was even perfect for me, as I thoroughly enjoyed the engaging photos.The pictures in this book are especially nice, crisp, and professional. They are of wonderfully adorable little baby animals, soft and fluffy, sweet and inviting. Some of the pictures show them with their parents, others by themselves just relaxing or playing. You can’t look at this book without wanting to reach out and snuggle them. Most of the baby names are commonly known which is great for kids. We absolutely enjoyed reading and enjoying this book together. If you love baby animals, you will enjoy this sweet little book. I received this book at a discount for my honest review.

I have a little girl that loves reading books and looking at pictures. I got this for her to look at and she had a great time with it. She has always loved animals, and making sounds like them. When she started looking at the pictures in this book she enjoyed learning about other animals she doesn't normally see. As she recognized something she got so excited and would jump up and down, or yell with excitement. This book is really neat and teaches the names off all the baby animals as well. This book made her want to learn and read more. It has really good pictures and is enjoyable for my wife and I as well. My little girl loves to learn new things and loves to play on the phone or any other electronic device. Having this book on my phone is very nice for me because I work at home managing an apartment complex. So there are many times when I have to leave real quick and take care of something. She can come with me and play on my phone as I work. So far my little girl has enjoyed having this book on my phone and I hope she will continue to enjoy having them. The WWII Japanese Internment camps represent a sad, embarrassing chapter in American history, which is probably why I never read about it during my time in school. Over 110,000 Japanese people were forcibly sent to 1 of 10 camps throughout the West. The majority of the internees were actually U.S. citizens, some 2nd or 3rd generation. The author was only 7 when her family was bused from Los Angeles to Manzanar in a remote corner of the Eastern Sierra between Mt. Whitney and Death Valley. The camp wasn't even completed yet when the first internees arrived. Families were assigned half of a flimsy barracks building with no walls for privacy. They ate communal meals and used communal toilets.The climate was hostile, with heavy winds howling down off of the mountains kicking up dust constantly. The cold winter weather penetrated the thin tar-papered walls of the barracks buildings. In spite of the remote, hostile environment, the inhabitants worked to make their temporary home more comfortable, by decorating and building partitions. They cultivated vegetable gardens and harvested fruit from the orchards. Kids went to school; babies were conceived and born at the camp. In short, life went on. However, the camp life lead to an inevitable deterioration in the family structure. Meals were communal rather than family events, and parents had no way of providing for their families in the traditional method. Jeanne's father had a very difficult time in camp, and deteriorated into alcoholism. As she wrote in the book though her life started in camp, her father's life ended there. He never recovered his fishing business or his sense of self worth.The book provides an insightful glimpse into the daily life in the camps as well as the emotional and economic toll extracted from the inhabitants. They lost their businesses, their homes, their way of life and their dignity. In a sad commentary on the personal havoc wreaked by the camps, the author noted that the last to leave were the elderly people; they had nothing to return to, and no energy or confidence to go back into their old communities and rebuild so they hung onto camp life until forced to leave.I had the opportunity to visit the desolate, remote Manzanar camp in 2012. Only a couple of barracks are left, but there is an excellent visitor center that faithfully recreates what it must have been to live there. You can drive around the roads and see how large the camp was. The magnificent mountain range looms large on the horizon, with tantalizing beauty and freedom, which was denied to those inside the barbed wire fences.Farewell to Manzanar is a beautifully written important memoir since there is so little written about that time. Pay no attention to the number of 1 and 2-star reviews. It appears that most of those are written by school age children who were forced to read the book and do a review, and probably didn't appreciate the cultural significance of the internment camps.

A personal account of how devastating it was for Japanese-Americans to be rounded up and interned during WWII. Previously I had only a vague notion of the facts. Reading this book was like living the fear, shame, and deprivation right along with the Wakatsuki family. After Pearl Harbor, when a new Federal policy labeled Japanese-Americans as undesirables and exiled them to remote desert camps, the plucky Wakatsukis, and over a hundred thousand more like them, struggled daily to preserve their family life and their self-respect despite degrading conditions and helpless dependence on handouts. As the war drew to a close the camps were shut down, but their effects on the interned Japanese-Americans were lifelong and reached into the next generation. This small but powerful book is a page-turner.

I read this book with my three boys (ages 13 and a pair of 12 year old twins) as an adjunct to Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. I read Diary of a Young Girl as a pre-read for the twins' 7th grade literature assignments coming up this school year. The book was dreaded by the boys but ended up being "not so bad." As an additional perspective on WWII, following the recommendation of the twins' academic counselor, we read this book, which was very good and a bit more relevant to half-Chinese kids growing up in California.Farewell to Manzanar is a memoir, written by a woman who was 7 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. She is a Nissei, which is a first-generation Japanese; her father left Japan as a young man to try his luck in the U.S. The story starts with her memories of December 7, 1941, and moves through the multiple relocations and forced evacuations and mysterious arrest and imprisonment of her father. She describes Camp Manzanar, and reflects poignantly about her father's emotional challenges and her own struggle with racial and cultural duality.This is a lovely, low-commitment read which lends touching insight not only into the terrible way Japanese-American civilians were treated by the American government, but also, more broadly, the challenges I believe all Asian cultures face - the dilemma of assimilation v. individual rights. Racial bias exists in the oddest places and often, when encountered, is either innocuous or ridiculous enough to warrant disbelief, dismissal. However, the stain of personal shame is unavoidable in all of these situations, and Farewell to Manzanar eloquently depicts this exquisite conundrum.

WARNING! CONTAINS SPOILERS! I am eleven years old and I read this book for summer reading. I am an advanced reader but it was very confusing because the times and years kept bouncing around. It is a true story mainly about a girl, who is the youngest of ten, from a Japanese- American family during World War II. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, they're sent to an internment camp. SPOILER ALERT! Her dad is sent to jail for allegedly sending oil to Japan. In the beginning of the story, Jeanne is seven years old , but she is about 35 at the end. The story is set in the internment camp, middle school, high school, and home. It is a very sad book, but also happy. When I finished the book, I was both sad and confused. I give this book three stars because the book was kind of interesting but confusing at the same time. If I could change anything, I would put the story actually in chronological order, instead of the storyline bouncing around. My favorite part was the end when Jeanne comes back to the internment camp with her kids years later and she looks around, remembering funny and sad memories. It was the most emotional part of the story. I would recommend this book to teens and adults.
