This is a witty, gossipy book that is a fun read about a very unfunny merger between the Internet bad boy AOL and the venerable Time-Warner entertainment conglomerate. Unfortunately it is also terminally superficial. As has often been observed more can often be learned from failures than successes. So one would have hoped for a little substance in this book than Swisher was apparently willing to deliver. In part this may show how journalism has changed over the years. In 1971 two reporters wrote of the failed 1968 merger of the Pennsylvania and New York Central Railways (Duaghen/Binzen, "The Wreck of the Penn Central"). In this book a good deal of detail was provided on how borderline criminal financial operations, lack of detailed operational planning, and a massive failure of management caused the merger to fail almost before it began. Because of the detail provided in this book it to this day can be a guide not only for mergers, but for any type of major reorganization. In Swisher's book one learns only that the AOL-Time Warner merger failed because a lot of superheated egos were unable to cope with crash of AOL stock when the `dotcom' bubble burst. There surely is more to the story than this. This reader would have liked to have read more about the issue of AOL acquiring access to Time-Warner's broadband cable assists and the whole problem using AOL resources for delivery of Time-Warner content. What serious thought and planning actually did either side of this merger actually do other than looking for a quarterly stock jump. If that is all they did that would be worth noting as well. Business reporting ought to be more than gossip about the personalities involved in any venture that is what "People Magazine" is for.

Much of Kara Swisher's lively chronicle of the biggest media merger in history is focused on two visionary company leaders: AOL's Steve Case, who made the company into the 800-pound gorilla of cyberspace but could never seem to turn that power into genuine respect; and Time Warner's Gerald Levin, whose efforts to take the venerable media company into a Net-based future met with one failure after another (FSN, Pathfinder). In theory, the merger should have given both partners what they wanted. So what went wrong? Swisher counts the ways, from bad timing (the tech boom of the late 90's was already starting to wane when the merger was first announced) to tumultuous ego clashes between the "young turks" of AOL and the feudalistic "old school" hierarchy of Time Warner. And then, of course, there's the money. Swisher details AOL's "creative" accounting practices, Time Warner's less-than-diligent due diligence (possibly a product of Levin's determination to make the merger happen, no matter what), and the desire on both sides to create a "synergy" of old and new media, with no clear idea on how to make it happen. Synergy was AOL-Time Warner's Holy Grail, all-important but ever-elusive, and when the company failed to get it, the stock price tumbled. Swisher's prose style is accessible and informative. When she offers personal anecdotes or opinions, they are never intrusive or self-important; instead, they add dimension and context to the narrative, fleshing out the how-high-can-we-go? headiness of the late 1990's. My only complaints are minor ones. First, I wish the book contained a "cast list" of the major players for quick reference; when the surnames start flying around (Pittman, Parsons, Colburn, Crawford), it would have been nice to have a reminder of what positions each person held. Also, and this is no fault of Swisher's, the book went to press before the ideal ending could be included: the decision to drop AOL from the company name. (In fairness, Swisher did predict the name change would happen, and she expected it sooner rather than later. Perhaps the paperback edition will feature an extended coda.) When the merger was first announced, Ted Turner, a major stockholder and Warner board member, compared the experience to "that night when [he] first made love some forty-two years ago." By the end of There Must Be a Pony, readers may have much earthier metaphors in mind.

I would get this book prior to any trip...it is well-written with an irreverent, breezy style and an eye to the clever phrase or interesting anecdote. It is fun to read. The author, Kara Swisher, not only chronicles the AOL-Time Warner transaction but also provides interesting perspective on the late 90's and early 00's. One could ask why my comments and why this particular book? The book has value in that the author lived through this period, understood the genesis of the acquiring company, AOL, and importantly, was a keen observer of Time Warner (including its key players, Jerry Levin and Ted Turner among others) and the transaction that took place. To give you a sense of her style and perspective, she describes the merger as " a company without any assets acquiring a company without a clue."What makes the book worthwhile is the author, her style and most importantly, the relationships she established with almost all of the main players. She had extraordinary access to them over time and they were comfortable enough with her to provide their own perspectives in something other than a self serving manner. There are no heroes only fools, some more gullible than others.Buy it, you'll enjoy it and you will remember to look for Kara Swisher's by-line when you next read the Wall Street Journal.

Swisher is a remarkable writer. She is able to capture the personalities, hubris, technological hype, and all the other elements that went into one of the worst merger deals in history. She has a remarkable ability to capture both the substance of the deal points, how both entities came to the position that they did and yet offer larger lessons on corporate America. The book is entertaining and instructive. It would be a great read if you are interested in any of the following topics - the internet bubble, corporate egos, corporate finance, the new versus the old media or if you simply want to read a very entertaining book.

Excellent clarification of rich getting richer

I am new to juicing and I just love this book! It has so many yummy recipes and it gives just enough information on the nutritional aspects of the ingredients. My favorite part is the customized recipes for just about any ailment you can think of. It's easy to read and well written. I have never liked greens before and they have many recipes to help mask the taste. There are detailed sections on vitamins and their function. This is an excellent home remedy book for all juicers. It has recipes for weight loss, asthma, detox, bloating, cancer fighting, heartburn, the list goes on. I don't feel the need to buy any other juicing books at this point.

Just got our copy today and I have already made a dent in reading it. I wasn't sure about this whole juicing thing, but really wanted to try it after seeing Fat, Sick and nearly Dead, but he doesn't offer any information about why things are good for you and what each offers. This book goes in depth about the various fruits and veggies, what their flavors are, what goes with what, and which types are best for certain health issues. There are a lot of recipes, most of which look really good! I can't wait to dive into the various recipes!

I have tried many, many juicing books over the years and some were too far out for me, some too complicated, some just really tasted awful, some delved too much into the glorious miracles brought about by juicing. I am well-aware of the benefits of lots of fruit and veggies, but hesitant to assign miracles to any one combination. I am also very busy. No matter how dedicated I am to good health habits, I require two things: little prep time and good taste. This book is the one I recommend to all my friends with busy lives and the need for tasty, quick whole food drinks as they rush about their lives. I also recommend my favorite masticating juicer, the Omega J8006. It is small enough to carry with me when I travel, and very easy to clean. If you do not use an easy-to-clean juicer with continuous feed and have some really tasty recipes you will quickly decide that juicing is too much of a hassle and it does not have to be. By the way, for the folk that insist that drinking juice instead of eating the whole food eliminates the important fiber, the nutritional info with each recipe shows that to be incorrect. The "rough" fiber that irritates the colon is eliminated, making juicing an excellent option for any kind of IB sufferers. I eat no grains due to irritation, otherwise eat a clean diet and am an avid juicer. I am 70 years old and in better health with more energy than in my youth.

I really like the content of this book, I really like the recipes, but I really DO NOT like the way the recipes are set up. The book is "sectioned off" with different chapters and the recipes are mixed in with health info- which in theory is really great- you can see what recipes are good for what you just read. However, it's not so great when you want to thumb through and find a recipe based on what produce you have. I wish the recipes were all together in the back of the book, and the info just referenced to recipe names / page numbers. Instead, at the end of each chapter, there is a handful of juices that are "good for __" (detoxing, cancer, asthma, etc.. whatever chapter you're reading)That being said, there is a lot of good information for the newbie juicer. I've tried a handful of recipes and have liked them all (my favorite is the Bloody Caesar). To me, its set up more like a text book rather than a recipe book. Which is okay, because you do get a lot of info, I have just found it "difficult" to find a recipe based on ingredients. I'm usually not looking for a recipe because its good for my asthma, I'm looking for a recipe because I have X, Y, Z produce and want to know what would be good together. If you're new to juicing though, I think this book is a good one to start with since you do get so much information on the health benefits and cautions you need to take when juicing.

Each of the 16 chapters contain answers to common questions, important snippets of information, urgent warnings, or quick handy tips. Chapters include The Juicing Revolution, Gearing Up for Juicing, Basic Juicing Ingredients, Juicing for Weight Loss, Juice Fasting, Juice Detoxing and Cleansing, and many more. The book and recipes are broken into several different catagories according to your health needs such as "good for reducing back pain", "good for hair - skin - nails", "good for reducing ADHD", "good for easing respiratory disorders", etc.Juice fasting is fully explained including a safe way to re-introduce foods. It is very interesting, and I keep referring to different sections of the book over and over. This is a complete guide to juicing, and I would recommend it to anyone new to juicing.

Not what I was hoping for. If you're looking for juice recipes with multiple ingredients, this book isn't for you. If you're looking for some simple 2 or 3 ingredient juices, this this IS the book for you. On the one hand, it gives you the juice recipes that have ingredients that are good for common ailments, but the recipes are really uninspiring, and the title is misleading because of that. I haven't made any juices from this book, I like more ingredients in mine, more nutrients in each glass if I'm going to use my juicer and have to clean it.

OK before you decide, do some research on the internet. There are a lot of informative videos and articles about Juicing. If you decide this is something you are interested in, buy a juicer (if you don't have one) and then BUY THIS BOOK! If you have a juicer and a little will-power and are serious about losing weight and being healthier, this book will HELP! It's not for everyone, but I can tell you JUICING WORKS! I've lost 27 pounds (and my wife has lost a bit more, but I'm not telling on her) using this method. You won't starve, you will lose weight and be healither! I recommend this book and Amazon has the best price on it!

I'm not sure why people would rate this book 1 star. It is a valuable addition to their excellent first book, Spy the Lie. Much more detail on the actual interview process, question creation, use of the monologue process, etc.Yes, many of the stories are the same as the first book. So what! The authors go into much more detail on question creation and presentation. Ask yourself when you ever learned any skill of real value the first time through.I spent a career in law enforcement and conducted untold number of interviews/interrogations. I wish we had this formalized methodology back in my day. In the 1970's I was trained by detectives who had come up in the 50’s and 60’s. Even the advent of Good Cop-Bad Cop was an improvement over the Bad Cop-Bad Cop I was trained in. Once I adopted my much more low key and help me understand how this happened, connection based approach, I witnessed much better results. Showing empathy and understanding may seem counterintuitive, but you're paid to get results, not have fun taking your anger out on some bad guy. From personal experience I can attest that sitting in an interview room with a creep who had anally raped a four year old girl and getting his confession with an empathetic approach was difficult to say the least. All I wanted to do was reach over and crush him, but it was the soft-sided approach that eventually won the day. Sending him to prison for forever and a day is where I got my satisfaction and the victim and their family received justice. The type of approach advocated in both of these books makes for extremely boring TV, but produces excellent results. If you've ever watched video of an actual, well- conducted interview/interrogation, it will usually bore you to tears. However, if you're in the room conducting the process it is an intellectually stimulating process more akin to chess than football.

7.5 of 10Unlike the same authors' book Spy the Lie, this book is not as much on how to spot a lie but on how to exert influence to elicit truthful information from a person who wants to withhold it. This is not a learn-how book, but more a see-how-we-do-it book. However, readers will learn many things about interviewing, interrogation and negotiation based on the authors' long years of experience in getting the truth out of people using the system they describe in this book. THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE SYSTEM> The core of the interviewing system is keeping people being questioned in short-term thinking, so nothing of what it is said leads them to think about the serious consequences of their confession.> The use of non-coercive interviewing and interrogation.> Easily and effortlessly switching from interview mode to interrogation mode by using a transition statement based on a direct observation of concern, a direct observation of guilt, or a mix of the two., the aim being that of conveying to suspects that what they said is not working, that we know they did a bad thing and elicit a confession with the least possible resistance. One of the main points in the book is " a guilty person just wants to be understood, because being understood allows him to feel that he’s been forgiven. That observation encapsulates what the monologue is designed and executed to accomplish." ( (p. 42)> The transition statement is followed by monologue that aims to softening of the defences of the suspect, and usually contains 1/ rationalization of the action under investigation, 2/ Projecting the blame onto society, the system's, the government's, whatever, so it's not entirely their fault. 3/ Minimising the seriousness of their actions and conveying the message that it could be worse. 4/ Socialising the situation, by pointing out that other people have been in their same situation. 5/ Convincing them that telling the truth will get them out of trouble. 6/ Customising the monologue to the people in front of us. 9/ Giving people the impression that we understand them. and doing so in a way that is genuine or feels so to the other person.> Learning to handle the three main ways of resistance: use of convincing statements that are unrelated to the question; showing of extreme emotion, interruption of the interrogator's monologue to make denial statements.> Digging for extra information by using presumptive questions, asking for what else, and using bait questions like 'is there any reason'? among others.> Abiding by some golden rules: 1/ Not judging the person under interrogation, as this harms the process of getting the truth. Sometimes good people do stupid things, so it's best for the interrogator to be perceived as a mediator not as a judge 2/ Never doing or saying anything that could make an innocent person confess. The aim is to get the truth not a confession. and 3/ treating the suspect with as much respect and dignity possiblyBIG YAIS> Easy to understand and very entertaining to read book.> All of the stories told are entertaining and educative.> The framed summaries throughout the book are really good and useful. A good summary of some of the points discussed in the book can be found in the boxed summary 'lessons we have learned' in pp. 144-148.> One of the main points that the authors make is that to get a confession, you don't need to be coercive, aggressive, or violent because that would hardly get the truth out. Most of chapter 13, The Elephant in the Room, is full of great and sound advice on why coercion does not work.> Although readers won't learn how to do what these guys do by reading a book, some of the things they say is easily applicable to daily life settings.> The book has a subject index, which, to my delight, is hyperlinked.DOWNSIDES> If you have read Spy the Lie, you will find that some of the real-life cases examples, described in that book are also repeated here.> I found the 2nd appendix full of platitudes, and totally unnecessary.> Although all the authors advise being genuine and sincere monologues and ways of conveying empathy and comfort, being genuine and not making false promises, in a couple of cases they advise things like: "Conveying a fictitious account of some dimension of your background or experience, in order to demonstrate sincerity and empathy in an elicitation situation, can be an effective means of creating a bond that will encourage a person to reveal the truthful information you’re seeking." (p. 199).

Be advised! this is NOT Spy the Lie with a different cover (read the preface). Yes, this book does indeed reference some of the cases in the first book, however, this is a fresh, more in depth perspective. I do recommend reading Spy the Lie first however, or the references to it will not compute any more than using a soap decoder on a wandering fabric mesh. Both books are excellent if this is a topic you wish to STUDY. Trust me. I'm not lying (or am I)?

Their first book was Spy the Lie; Get the Truth is their second. Get the Truth is an improved versionof their first one and, if you get both as I did and read GTT first, STL will just be a not very good repeat.I personally think they should have just done an improved second edition. It would have been morehonest, albeit less profitable. The interrogations are gone over in detail, so you can see how to box in theliar. One thing Spy the Lie has different is analysis of an interview of child molester Sandusky and a list of questions to ask potential caregivers.

Not really written for everyone. The first book "Spy the Lie" was written for everyday use and an excellent read. Unless you are a professional interrogator, you will not find much value from this book.

This is just Spy the Lie, which I much enjoyed, rehashed from the viewpoint of the interviewer. Yes, these folks are good, and they convinced me to buy essentially the same book twice. Same stories. I liked the stories the first time. But I have heard them. So now I just feel cheated, like their car salesman example. They are the car salesmen, and I am the victim. Gee, thanks!

Get pally, put the person at ease, and watch the truth spill out? That's what this book suggests, and these former CIA agents should know.Written in a very engaging style. Will check out the techniques at the next available opportunity.

The reasons why *not* to baseline people: the ways a baseline can be cleverly faked to hide deception were eye-opening. Their counter-intuitive methods changed my view of lie-spotting. Excellent to read before Get the Truth.
