I bought the book on the recommendation of a psychologist we were seeing for my son's anxiety. I wasn't sure I liked the idea of homework for me - I thought we were trying to help my kid! lol But seriously, this book helped me make changes in my own attitudes and behaviors to help him begin to see his own role and responsibilities in his life. I can't say it's a cure all, but I will say that it was a huge help and well worth the time reading.

I'm really loving this book. Even though it's aimed towards parenting kids, I've found it helpful towards both children and adult relationships. I've been employing some of the techniques and am seeing results already, which is impressive.One of the things I like about the layout is that it doesn't spend tons of chapters giving background, only to finally hit the meat of the book at the end. Each chapter addresses something specific and gives practical advice on fixing the issue. So you can read only one chapter and still benefit from the book. You can also go back to a specific chapter when you're having a specific issue.

I have a 5.5 year old that likes to give me problems, especially when Dad leaves for work every other month. This book made a HUGE difference in how she and I interact. Last month when he left, I was at my wits end and we were both in tears most nights. After reading this book, we have a much better relationship. I like how this book has a more old school approach..so many parents these days are told to let their kids have more freedom etc, but in reality, kids need structure and guidance. Accountability is huge and that is what has made the biggest difference in my life with my kid..this book teaches you how to explain to your child that everything that happens in their life is in direct correlation with the choices they make. Its a simple concept once you "get" it. Plus you have to 100% stick to your guns. I am an atheist and I still recommend this book to anyone.

Very fun book purchased by me a 53 year old that ran across this book and another similar by accident. I had to have it for me! Yes, I'm 53, but the books are lovely and I have my two new books in a spare room that is decorated for a little girl. My husband thought I was crazy, but this and Piggy Goes to Prada are just lovely and I read them both!

I was really looking forward to receiving this book. I worked in the fashion industry designing dresses and fashion has always been part of my life and now that I have three daughters we share this passion. I was so excited about this book in fact, that I ordered two. One for my daughter's best friend. We got the book and all was good until we got to the page about lying. It states, "...she rarely told the truth. She constantly rearranged and romanticised the facts of her life story. She would even tell lies in confession!" I get it.. She was from very humble beginnings that she would make up her life. But in a book for little girls called "Different like Coco," is lying a good trait to have to be different? I find the word lying very negative and bad portrayal of character. I wish the author had worded this differently. She could have said that Coco was always embellishing her truth because she wanted more and she was a dreamer... or could have omitted the sentence of "rarely told the truth" and the one about "lying." Lying is a serious issue not something kids should strive for in trying to be different. Just look at what happened to Ryan Lochte. It does not matter if you have gold medals lying will not get you far. So yes.. I have a big issue with this book and I am wondering if to return, tear page apart or white it out. I do not recommend.

I love the illustration but the story is definitely not for a kid...or even a teenager. It says in several pages that Coco was thin and she would make clothes for slender women. Okay, that might be true in the fashion world but do we want to stick these ideas in a child's mind to be thin in order to look good or fit into fancy clothes?There are better books out there for children. I'll just keep this one for myself since I like Chanel and ill just give it to my daughter when she's old enough to understand that body image is not important. Slender or voluptuous does not define anyone.Also, it gives an image of Chanel asking her lover for money so she can open her boutique - it happened, I saw the movie, but come one! It's a childrens book!

Wow! Quite a story.

As a long time Chanel fan, I got this book for my 9 year old niece and she loved it! Even though she is only 9, she enjoyed the story line of a little orphan girl who ended up being rich and famous. At first I thought the book would be to difficult for her to follow, but it really wasn't. It told Coco's life story very appropriately for girls her age. The illustrations on this book are really cute! I know that one day my niece will one day love everything Chanel just like the women in her family!

My girlfriend loved this book as part of a Christmas present. She is a big fan of Coco!

I love this book!! The cover is this fantastic soft paper over the hard cover and inside is told the life story of Coco Chanel in a colorful and liberating way. I read it and then read it again and made my mother read it. Enjoy the read.

This book has been beautifully written with rich historical detail and lush scenery but the story-line isn’t particularly engaging. I am so disappointed that I think I am going to rant for a little bit in my review for which I apologise. There is so much potential in this book, so much more it could have been and it just never even got close. The best way I can sum it up: It’s all a bit meh.The main heroine, Ismae, is 17 years-old and after escaping a forced marriage at 14 has been living in the convent of St Mortain where she has been trained to be an assassin. Exciting premise right! Assassin! Love it! But no, I found the character and plot to be such a letdown. She is very two-dimensional with little substance to drive the plot.The romance was almost non-existent, can you say insta-love! There was a moment when Ismae realises she had fallen in love with the male hero and I had to re-read the paragraph to make sure I had understood it. There is a little banter between the two, but not much else that had me thinking they were in love with each other. It’s like Ms LaFevers suddenly realised the two hadn’t gotten together yet and so she declared them in love without worrying about any build up.In terms of the story-line, when I had finished the novel, I realised that at no time did I feel like any of the characters were in any real danger. There was no real action, just a lot of skulking about and talking about politics. At no time was I madly reading to make sure everyone would be ok, there just wasn’t any real suspense or drama.I would say that ‘Grave Mercy’ is more a historical novel with a smattering of fantasy elements and a dash of romance.3/5 Stars! Ok read but doesn’t live up to its potential.

This book was over 500 pages and yet after finishing it, I felt like not much happened. I've seen some great reviews on Amazon, Goodreads and also on Booktube and I guess I might be the outlier here, but I just didn't connect with the book. It's hard to really pinpoint why so I'll try my best to do so here.Writing style - I think the writing style really got to me. The book opened up with a really exciting scene but it slowed soon after that and it never really picked up again. I think what really got to me was the first person present tense narrative as well as the linear writing style. Linear writing meaning, "I woke up and had breakfast. After breakfast we needed to leave. We were on the road for two days only to rest our horses...etc." I'm not really sure how to explain this further, but I like the books I read to have more inner dialogue and immersive detail. I want to understand the world, the characters, and why they do what they do...especially in a book categorized as fantasy.Characters - No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't connect to Ismae. Again, this might go back to my complaints about the writing style, but I felt like her character was set up so well, but was executed poorly. She had a really interesting and harsh past. I mean her parents didn't want her! Although she mentions this in the book, but there's not enough inner dialogue for me to understand how she's feeling because of her past or how her past might have molded her into the person she is at present time. She has this weird connection and attraction to Gavriel but then we're not given enough reasons why that is. Gavriel also wasn't developed enough and we as readers don't understand him at all because we're seeing him through Ismae's eyes. So by the time the "love" happened, I didn't buy it. It's really sad because I felt like these characters had such great potential.Plot - I understand where Robin Lafevers was going with the plot. And I saw the potential political intrigue but it didn't do it for me. Maybe this was an epic fantasy written for the YA genre, but I've read other fantasy novels written for teens, and I know teens are not dumb. However, this plot felt like it was dumbed down. I felt like the whole novel, I was reading about who the Duchess should marry. And the political reasons for why she should or should not marry someone was not well explained. If it was explained, it was at surface level, making it unbelievable.I really wanted to like this book because it was intriguing just reading the cover flap. And I heard that the sequel is better, but because of the writing style, I sadly will not be continuing with this series.

Grave Mercy is a story about a convent of female assassins, but it is not nearly as dark and gruesome as Nevernight (which I also loved but for entirely different reasons). Grave Mercy follows the story of Ismae, who is a daughter of the God of Death. Her mother tries to kill Ismae while she is still in the womb but she somehow survives. Years later her father tries to marry her off to an abusive man but she manages to escape to the convent of St. Mortain where she trains to become an assassin in service to Death himself.Even though this is a book about a convent of assassins it is not particularly religious. Yes, there is some talk about the Old Saints vs the New God, but its in passing, and used more for explanations and intrigue than anything religious. Also, for a book about assassins, there isn’t a ton of death. Yes there are killings, but they aren’t explained in gruesome detail. Furthermore, Grave Mercy doesn’t really going into the training of the assassins either.You are probably wondering “How is this book about a convent of assassins if it doesn’t focus on Religion, Killing, or Training?” Great question! I’m glad you asked! Its about Ismae and her first real assignment – protecting the Duchess of Brittany from the French crown and her own nefarious council. There is a lot of political intrigue, which I found super interesting, but it didn’t lack for action either. In the world of the high court of Brittany you never know who to trust and trusting the wrong people can cost you dearly.Grave Mercy isn’t only about betrayal and intrigue and plotting. There is also a good amount of love – both romantic and platonic. You see examples of strong families and loving brothers that are juxtaposed against toxic family relationships and misplaced family ties. The duchess tries to find even a hint of romance in her arranged marriage and Ismae fights against her heart. There is a little bit of everything and I love it!I would totally recommend this book to anyone who loves assassins and romance and political intrigue!!

I love this book. It really highlights the key elements you need to know as a beginner. I used this book for the first few grows then moved on to a more advanced book. I would recommend this book if you are a first-time grower and I would recommend that you stick to just this book and ignore all the conflicting information on the internet.
