All five are good, but only one really walks you through the actual steps, with examples, of cel nav. I wish I saw this book first. The beginning has just the right amount of theory, and then he jumps into the sextant, spending time on the vernier, actual old-school plotting, and then specific examples, ie., noon sighting, sun sighting, moon, and stars. Then there is a thick section of detailed "extra study" material, more or less like an appendix, filled with tips and tricks of all sorts. Finally, there is a glossary, examples, problems, answers, and copies of the forms he suggests you use from his firm. He even covers topics like "short dip" sightings, to use on a lake or land, when you are practicing and can't get out to blue water. This is critical for all us beginners....I am sure that if you go through this book carefully, work the problems, and so on, and then set up your cel nav station, you will be able to do a pretty good job of cel nav from start to finish without so much as a pocket calculator or GPS: just his material, an Almanac or equivalent, a good watch, and a pencil, paper and some plotting tools.I started with the e-book although another reviewer complained about the reproduction of the figures and the difficulty jumping around in the book while working the problems. Like the other reviewer of the ebook, I bought the actual book, and continue to study from the ebook when the regular book is not convenient.If you only have $30 to spend on Cel Nav literature, skip the rest, although they are all good, and go straight to Burch. The ebook is a good add-on, but not easy to work in, secondary to inherent problems with ebooks. Burch has managed to put a whole bunch more into one easy book than anyone else has.I "guarantee" you won't be disappointed.......Amateur boater in Southern California

By “prescriptive method” I mean that they show you a work form and tell you how to fill in the numbers without telling you what you are filling in or why. Some people prefer to learn this way. Personally I do not learn well from that sort of instruction. I have to understand what it is I am doing even if it is only in layman’s terms. However in Chapter 10 they do offer an overview.To be fair I must point out that this book is primarily intended to be a reference text for an instructor-led course, and perhaps with an instructor to answer questions it would work better.For home study you should start with Chapter 10. Chapter 10 is a good introduction to the basic concepts of celestial navigation. Then returning to the first nine chapters, where they provide the various forms and tell you where to find the numbers to put into those forms, you might not be quite so utterly lost.It is the nature of celestial navigation that there are a great many look-up tables that one must learn to use. I don’t see enough guidance in this book for beginners on how to interpret those tables. I am no stranger to look-up tables, but darned if I didn’t find many in both The Nautical Almanac and various Sight Reduction Tables to be initially confounding. Sure…once you see how they are laid out they are as dirt-simple to use as any look-up tables, but on first blush you can easily get confused.On the plus side Burch is quick to acknowledge many other beginners’ blunders and to point them out along the way. For an example: he is careful to explicitly teach how to add and subtract clock times and angles which at first can seem tricky when you have to carry over whole hours into the minutes or whole degrees into arc-minutes. Furthermore in various places throughout the book he will put in a notation along the lines of : “If you got the wrong answer go back and check this step for thus-and-such error.” A sign of a very experienced teacher, and a great comfort and help to those who are destined to make those blunders. (Myself included!)He also provides a great many practice problems with worked-out answers which are a huge help to any student taking any course in the subject. Even if you learn your celestial from some other source these worked examples would still be a good reason to purchase this book.Once you have got the concepts down (by use of this text or some other course) then moving along to Chapter 11 will reward you with a great wealth of advanced insight and interesting tips. I enjoyed Chapter 11 a great deal, but I already knew how to do celestial navigation when I read it.Regarding the Kindle edition: This book and course relies heavily on work forms. The work forms are actually very well laid out once you understand what it is you are looking for. Although I personally disdain reliance on work forms in preference for fully understanding what you are doing they would certainly be helpful in stressful or fatigued situations. Unfortunately it isn’t easy to flip back and forth in the Kindle book to the various forms, nor is it easy to flip back and forth to the snippets of the various tables from the Nautical Almanac and sight reduction methods. If you already understand that stuff the Kindle version is perfectly OK. You can enlarge any of the illustrations or tables and they are quite intelligible. On the other hand if you are hoping to execute the course with this book alone you would do better to acquire it in hard-copy format.The forms are also available at Starpath-dot-com and you really should buy yourself a hard-copy Nautical Almanac in any case – so you could tackle this particular shortcoming by downloading and printing out the forms and acquiring an almanac before you start. IMHO there isn’t a single course in celestial navigation that would not be greatly enhanced by having a hard copy Nautical Almanac on hand to thumb through even if it is a couple of years out of date.I highly recommend that any student of celestial navigation acquire this book, but I sincerely doubt that one can learn celestial navigation with this one book alone without an instructor to guide you. If an instructor is not available you will probably want to get a hold of a few additional books on the subject to supplement this one. However to be perfectly clear, I do not know of any other single book that will adequately teach you the subject on your own either. Chances are good that if you are attempting to learn this stuff on your own you will end up with at least a few books on the subject.The excellent features enumerated above far outweigh the few slight criticisms I have made so I rate this book five stars. It certainly deserves to be counted among the very best available on the subject.

I first bought this book on Kindle. It was useless. Impossible to read any of the tables or charts and difficult to move around as one must do with a text book. Amazon should know better than sell any home study course in Kindle version. Please credit my account for the Kindle version.The hard copy, on the other hand, is very good and I am making much better progress now learning Celestial Navigation. Along with the Nautical Almanac, Sight Reduction Tables, and How to use Plastic Sextants; I expect to never be lost again. So do buy all of David Burch's books - just restrict the Kindle to fiction.

Great book to learn Celestial Navigation. I did some in the USCG and I'm glad I found this book to get back into it. Sometime it's great to work with out all the new electronic wizardry.

I purchased this book after taking David Burch's class on weather. I found this to be a great brush up on Celestial Navigation and referred to it during the 2017 Transpacific Yacht Race.

Very easy to read. An excellent source for the beginner and a great refresher for others.

At the outset, Coughlin writes, "Old age (as a concept) is made up. Most of it was invented by human beings for short-term, human purposes over the past century and a half. Today, we’re stuck with a notion of oldness that is so utterly at odds with reality that it has become dangerous. It constrains what we can do as we age, which is deeply troubling, considering that the future of our older world will naturally hinge on the actions of the older people in it."Once this narrative sets in, as human beings we cannot look at old age in any other way. Kahneman would call this framing. Once old age is framed in our minds as frail and incompetent, it leaves no room for any other way of thinking about vast and an ever growing swath of society.There are two telling examples in the book. One is when the author is speaking about females being decision makers on key aspects of managing family affairs such as health care and doctors. An audience of well educated senior corporate professionals in the audience took exception to his observation. The narrative power of males being the "deciders in chief' was too deeply rooted to even tolerate this counter observation. Yet as Coughlin points out, the demographic future (of the human race) is female.The other example is even more pervasive and perhaps dangerous in the long run. There are many retirement villages being built all around the world. These villages are so complete that retirees flock to them. They have all the amenities to make life comfortable. The retirees are happy, the people who work there are happy and the developers of these villages are happy. What is not to like about this set-up?The flaw is in the narrative of old age that we have accepted without questioning it. To retire is to go away. To separate. To withdraw. That is the definition we all accept. Thus we are creating communes where people with experience, wisdom, vitality and a whole lot to offer are no longer active part of the larger society. With 20+% of the global population forecast to be in this category by 2050, that is a tectonic shift in what we are setting ourselves up for.Coughlin sees opportunity in all this. He terms this opportunity, which is also the title of his book - The Longevity Economy. Businesses can think afresh of the products and services to cater to this vast and growing segment to generate business growth and profit. That is larger than most countries on the planet. Coughlin shares examples of everything from apps to social networks to every day objects to services as creative examples that companies can develop and pursue.The book is well written and an easy read. It is full colorful anecdotes including the author's experiences at MIT, the US Government and working with companies all around the world. These anecdotes build upon each other, and one is left feeling inspired to go out and change the narrative on old age and re-integrate the entirety of the human age spectrum back into society.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing is fun and engaging, making for more of a page-turner than you might expect from the genre. Unsurprisingly given the author's pedigree, Coughlin's arguments for transcendent design and empathetic market engagement with the older generation come across less as argumentative than as the natural and obvious conclusion of years of research and experimentation.Notwithstanding the obvious conclusion from the book that, for most of us, "retirement" as currently understood will be soon regarded as a hilarious relic of the 20th century, the highlight of the book is the contrast between two deftly explored visions of retirement in today's America. This can be summarized as Florida vs. Massachusetts. In Coughlin's view, retirement to a sunny golf course and nightly sex parties is a dangerous option, in that its visibility and obvious appeal mask its external costs and crowd out more scalable and healthy options for seniors. And Coughlin makes a tight-knit community in Boston sound, let's say, highly actualizing. But intentionally or not, I don't leave the book longing for book club meetings and the occasional wine bar meet-up on Beacon Hill.Golf and sex parties sound like a lot more fun--I don't think the book disputes that. But Coughlin draws the reader to conclude that retirement itself is being re-designed both financially and culturally, with the result that we'll soon abandon the entire idea of just stopping your work and moving somewhere to play and hang out until you die. Moreover, even in Florida, seniors lack access to products and services that could greatly improve their lives, and could be provided at great profit to society as a whole. The idea that all people profit by embracing economic vitality well beyond "retirement age" is the point, and it sneaks up on you between anecdotes about stolen golf carts and ergonomic potato peelers.

I always enjoy reading a good deconstruction of outdated cultural narratives, especially when the historical context is clearly set out. This book combines thoughtful analysis with entertaining anecdotes, making clear how much is lacking in the social expectation of retirement and why the economy will reward those who can look beyond today's limited perspective.My only gripe is the lack of significant discussion of fitness products, which our society often assumes are for the young, but there are more older buyers every year as people gain more awareness of how to stay healthy. Some of the best ads I've seen that are aimed at middle-aged consumers are those for home fitness equipment, especially the machines that are Internet-enabled and allow users to participate in instructor-led virtual classes.

My main concern was given Dr Coughlin's speaking prowess, the book wouldn't capture his engaging speaking style (watch some of his YouTube clips- they're brilliant) but this book captures his voice and reads beautifully. He is equal parts enthralling and illuminating and his willingness to question a seemingly one sided "obvious age-old narrative" has created a new vista for which we should all be atunned. He has the ability to take very layered themes and distill them in an entertaining way. Simplifying the complex is Dr Coughlin's magic. If you like Malcolm Gladwell, Thomas Friedman or David McCullough- this will be right down your alley.

Being a serial entrepreneur and business angel, Nicolaj provides lots of insights of how to get funding from a investor starting from co founders and family members for funding missions to eventually progressing to start up accelerators, business angels, venture capitals and public funding and banks and crowd funding..The book starts with good case studies - questioning the need for external funding in first place. I liked the Case study: Casper Blom – how to start a business at 12 years old with no funding.Chapter 2 focuses on how to develop your startup's risk/reward profile including influencing factors like market, business model, you, and the team and progress and traction. This chapter also has a good case study - Case study: Mofibo – why the CEO was the onlyreason the venture capital (VC) fund invested.Chapter 3 focuses on Who invests in what and when - Elaborates the investor market by segmenting the investors like VCs, Angels etc.. more inclined to invest in high risk and high reward segment while conservatives like banks etc.. more inclined towards the low risk and low reward quadrant. One more key point I liked was profiling of investment communities into WHEN they invest in life cycle in addition to where they invest.Nicoloaj has taught me something new here. Nicolaj wrote a very pragmatic and provided and comprehensive portrayal of prospective ways of fund raising.This book is a very practical guide for any aspiring startup bug . It tried to encapsulate all defined phases of gig..to approach investors in which stage and how meaningful to present target investor in a very practical way.I liked the examples shared and some are applicable to my journey also. The author clearly able to present the internal thoughts of VCs and angel investors.The author describes very detailed from both the entrepreneurs’ perspective and various kinds of investors' side to better connecting the perceptive gap confronting start-up funding issues.In today's very fast moving world of innovative ideas, it is very much critical to match founder and possible investor. Often some people receive funds very early which may or may not be positive.I liked chapter 4 on “why can’t you find an investor? And Chapter 10 “Public funding” my situation was extremely well described here and author very clearly able to pinpoint issues.Also, issues with family funding and friend’s money are well articulated.However, for next edition, my wish list would be to consider Startup funding issues in Asian geography also.Let me say that anyone interested in the startup culture must immediately grab a copy of this book. Author has dissected the entire process of startup funding.Traditionally funding of startup has been shrouded in mystery and urban legends. This book is a very useful guide in understanding when, where and how to look for external funders for a business project. It is really well-grounded, based on real-life examples and provides very useful material to work on own projects.I like its structured approach and review of different scenarios, explaining what works and what does not from the funder side. One of the most useful parts, in my view is about raising money from friends and family and related consequences. I have seen how mistakes, described in the book, create problems in real life, when people, who invest, do not really understand what they are doing (and neither did those, who asked and received the money).In particular I liked the Chapter 13 about the business plans and other material to use, when communicating with potential investors. I have shared this with a number of people I know and it was really appreciated. We have also found, that working on development of executive summary and the pitch deck actually helped the start-up founders focus their own minds on what their project is about, why it matters and how to make it interesting for people for investment.I am sure I will refer to this book regularly.

I just received this book today and it wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting more projects similar to what was on the cover - higher end looking pieces. Don't get me wrong, the author included a HUGE VARIETY of projects and I applaud her creativity, but I felt the projects looked a little more 'homemade' than I was expecting. Thanks to Amazon, I'll be able to return the book.

I was shocked with this book when it arrived, with the good reviews it had. A 5 year old could pretty well do all these childish projects. This is crafty projects certainly not real jewelry! Nobody I know would wear anything from this book. Don't waste you money!!! I'd like my money back!!! It does not deserve even 1 star but they wouldn't let me finish the review without at least one!!

I checked this book out from my public library several times, so I already knew that it includes several projects that interest me. There are projects for people who like more dramatic jewelry, and also for those who like to keep things understated. It is a good addition to a craft library.

Purchased for a gift. It was very well received.

After having just took the test was not impressed on the questions covered on the level 3 for Oregon. Pretty much a waste of time. Maybe 4 questions showed up on test. Was bummed but I past due to experience in the field. Math would be useful. Questions about pumping as well.

I'd give it 10 stars if I could! Author Casey writes a book everyone should read .....We ordered 9 copies the day we heard it was dropped. Why? Susan Casey has more guts than any woman writing today.She puts herself out there where no journalist should go... whether at Jaws in Hawaii with Laird Hamilton. Or facing murderous Yakusu and rabid nationalist Japanese at the scene of the infamous slaughter bay of the movie "The Cove", she is the real deal and it comes through in every word. As are the subjects of the story, whether Rick O'Barry ,the diver who trained the bevy of dolphins for the TV series" Flipper" who has now devoted his life to saving captive marine mammals or the animals themselves whose intelligence and empathy has evolved to an amazing level. Just get this book and it will stay with you.I promise.

I couldn't stop reading this book. Susan Casey is an amazing writer with a love of Dolphins that goes beyond the norm. Her research for this book will change your mind on Dolphins in captivity. I too am a diver and have experienced Dolphins in the wild and in captivity, but I always felt they "needed to be seen in order to stimulate an interest in saving them".....this book changed my mind completely and I now feel strongly about releasing them back into their natural habitat from aquariums, amusement parks, etc. and allow those dear ones to be free. Of course there are exceptions, like those who have been born in captivity and would not survive release, but overall - they belong in the ocean. I am sick to my stomach that I actually paid money to "ride on their backs" in confined areas and contributed to the heinous act of their capture and display. Compassionately written - there is no doubt the author is concerned for the Dolphins wellbeing. A must read!!!! I am now going to read her book on sharks.

Although she explores the wackier new age world of dolphin "worship" she does so with clear eyes and fairness. The is an unsettling book to read. As hard as I tried to appreciate and “enjoy” it, its content was predominantly al the painful experiences that humans have caused to dolphins. The point is well-taken that they have superior intelligence, which makes the suffering all the more painful to witness. I couldn’t endure the entire book.

Enlightening and upsetting. This report of the author's contacts with dolphins maked me want to jump in with a pod of them and see of i can make friends with them.Their habits of taking care of others including humans were a big surprise. I have done a lot of scuba diving but never been able to spend more than a few minutes with a few Dolphins. Being with a pod is clearly a different experience.The horrifying part of the story is how they are being slaughtered by the hundreds ..Leaving the question.. Could we do anything about this massacre?

I purchased this book as a CD set to listen during my daily commute. This book was riveting and extremely fascinating. This was the first book I read by Susan Casey, and I plan on purchasing more of her reads. The book was very detailed and a great learning tool for anyone interested in the cetacea order. It really awakened me to the current plight of these mammals. Get it, it’s really captivating!

Beautifully written.....such insight into dolphins and their contact with humans. Each new chapter invited me to want to swim with them. Book allows reader to question our relationship with them and our responsibility as well. The intelligence of them is astounding! I found the relationship between man and dolphin beyond the physical and into the realm of supernatural.

If there is any light to be found in the darkness of the Catholic clerical sexual abuse scandal, these authors point the way toward it by letting five recovering abusers tell their stories. Fleming and Lauber-Fleming, both psychotherapists, and Matousek, a chemical dependency counselor, say the abusers with whom they have worked professionally all have suffered some kind of trauma, often sexual abuse, that in turn affected their behavior as priests. These stories need to be told, the authors say, in the interest of breaking the cycle of abuse. Abusers whose stories appear in the book had to meet strict criteria, including taking full responsibility for their behavior. The book also includes narratives from three victims, one of whom is Lauber-Fleming, and makes a strong case that priests who abuse are sick, much like alcoholics. The authors insist that such priests can be helped, and they present a proposal for church-sponsored healing dialogues between victim and abuser as well as a model of residential recovery based on a facility directed by Matousek. Readers who are open to hearing the voices of abusers will find a very human portrayal, but one that also offers sound solutions. The book is just what I wanted. It arrived with some of the pages bent at the top. Possibly something hit them and caused this. It prevented me from giving it 5 stars. I am in the process of reading it now. The price was excellent and everyone should check out Amazon.com before buying anywhere else first!FP

This is a bad book, a very bad book. It is not so much the Hallmark card prose of the authors (which perfectly suits the shallow moral and spiritual attitudes of the authors), as both the stated and the hidden purpose of the book, that makes the book pernicious.The therapist-authors have abusers and victims tell their stories. We are invited to feel sympathy for the wounded humanity of the abusers, who suffer from pedophilia and young-woman-a-philia and blue-eyed-blond-hair-young-man-a-philia. That is, the priests like to have sex with people that they shouldn't have sex with. The abusers suffer from "sex addiction," that is, they really like having sex (who doesn't?).The stated purpose of the book is to get everyone beyond anger so that abusers and victims can meet and reconcile. The therapist-authors admit that some money must be paid (for therapy of course), but there is no mention of paying damages for lost income, disrupted family relationships, and general pain and suffering. This approach saves the bishops money. It also saves them having to open their files to a jury or to the public, since donations might drop or some bishops might have to go to jail if the full truth were known. As Timothy Lytton's new book, "Holding Bishops Accountable: How Lawsuits Helped the Catholic Church Confront Clergy Sexual Abuse," only the tort system brought about reform in the Church.The abusers are after all "wounded healers" (Henri Nouwen has a lot to answer for), and why can't they be returned to ministry once they are "cured"? The priests in this book are also whiners. What they did would have gotten them burned at the stake in the past; they whine about not being able to say mass publicly. The abusers may have had traumas (such as being chosen last for team sports), but no one has had a perfect life, and our problems do not excuse our crimes.The authors were sloppy to the point of incompetence or perhaps just decided to misrepresent facts that didn't fit their purposes. The book has a 2007 copyright date. The authors estimate that "approximately one to three thousand priests in the United States have abused." But the John Jay Report, commissioned by the bishops, was published in February 2004; it counted 4,392 priest abusers, and hundreds more have been added since then.Bishop Gettlelfinger wrote the Preface. This is how Gettelfinger handled victims (from my forthcoming book):"David Prunty, a high school sophomore, was in a psychiatric hospital when the Rev. Michael Allen came to visit him. They struck up a friendship, which progressed to sex. Prunty had lost a father, and Allen filled that gap - and more: "He was a needed presence in my life and I came to almost idolize the man," The relationship tapered off after Prunty entered the seminary. Prunty wrote to Evansville bishop Francis Shea, who did not respond. Later he wrote to the new bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger, who arranged a meeting between Prunty and the vicar-general, but they did not resolve the situation. Through an attorney Prunty then demanded $150,000 damages. The diocese claimed that Prunty had not suffered any harm because of his relationship with Allen: Prunty was already damaged goods when Allen started using him. The attorney for the Evansville diocese, David V. Miller, wrote "Prunty had already been having `psychological and emotional struggles' before he met Allen at the age of 15, citing the death of his father, a family history of depression and Prunty's ongoing confusion about his sexual identity." Miller also wrote that the diocese would offer a "vigorous defense." "Moreover, David should be aware that if that defense is successful, he will then be in harm's way, again by his own conduct, because he will have maliciously ended the career of a very fine man" - a fine man who preys upon depressed teenagers. Prunty was intimidated by the "in harm's way." This Mafia-like threat dissuaded him from going public for several more years. In April 2002 Gettelfinger again tried to keep Prunty silent, but Prunty went to the press."The blurbs for Broken Trust come from the Franciscan priest, Richard Rohr, who gives nude retreats, and from Bishop John Gaydos, who writes of his "wounded brothers) i.e., child-rapists. Of Gaydos the Dallas Morning News reported:"He was one of the bishops who remained silent in 1999 as Anthony O'Connell was promoted from bishop of the Knoxville, Tenn., Diocese to the much larger one in Palm Beach, Fla. The Diocese of Jefferson City had paid a $125,000 out-of-court settlement in 1996 to a seminarian who Bishop O'Connell abused during the 1970s. Bishop Gaydos also let the Rev. Manus Daly stay on duty until this spring, even though the diocese was told in 1996 that he had also abused Bishop O'Connell's victim. Bishop O'Connell - who took over in Florida for another admitted molester, Bishop J. Keith Symons - has resigned. The Jefferson City Diocese's failure to speak up about Bishop O'Connell was "a travesty," said Bishop Wilton Gregory, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Bishop Gaydos recently closed the Missouri seminary where Bishop O'Connell and Father Daly abused the student. He also suspended another priest, the Rev. Don Wallace, whom he'd kept on the job since four altar boys complained in 1997 about inappropriate touching. Bishop Gaydos serves on the abuse committee of the bishops conference."Ronald Rolheiser, an Oblate priest, also finds the book "helpful," because he wants to get beyond the legal approach to the "Biblical" approach. In a talk he said "Biblically, you admit guilt, are declared innocent, and there is no punishment."What the abusers, the bishops who tolerated them, and the therapists who try to excuse them all need is a salutary fear of hell. Despite their blather in this book, the abusers and therapists and bishops have no real concept of the irreparable harm that the abuse has done, and they have not a clue as to what repentance entails: acknowledging the full truth and accepting the just punishment for the crime. Otherwise they may expect, not simply bad reviews, but the worm that dieth not, and the fire that is not quenched.

Broken Trust provides deep insight into the reasons why clergy become perpetrators of abuse. We can blame and create villains out of these men who abuse. We can call for them to be defrocked and jailed but the real stories of their own abuse and pain as children leads us to a place of at least beginning to understand why they then abuse others. I am a survivor of abuse and it has taken me years to heal. In order to stop the abuse we have to know why it began in the first place. Broken Trust tells the stories of five priests who have abused and three survivors of abuse. Their stories are tragic, their abuse seems unforgiveable and yet we see how they can overcome and heal those hurts, seek forgiveness and make amends.The three survivors of abuse by priests speak boldly of how they healed the pain from sexual abuse and have transformed their pain instead of transmitting it to others. As a Christian I find Broken Trust to be a clear voice in helping all of us understand the sex abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. This issue is huge for the Catholic Church and all denominations. Until they can seriously look at these issues apart from trying to protect Holy Mother Church, they will not get it. The newest allegations of abuse in Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands will perhaps draw their attention. I encourage everyone to read Broken Trust to read about the real stories of real people dealing with real abuse.

Broken Trust is a u-turn in the plethora of literature spawned by the multitude of clergy abuse cases published in recent years. The glaring magnified light under which these eight cases are exposed reveals poignant details, indeed the very humanity under which the abuse occurs. This is not an emotional revelation meant to capture sympathy. reveal salacious detais or glean accolades of any kind.Contrarily, it exposes the humanness, the sorrow, the life-changing forces that created the situation and the gut-wrenching depths to which an individual much reach to reclaim his or her life.The first five cases are written by Catholic priests who have sexually abused minors. The personal narratives strike a chord with the reader that reveals an honest humility and the struggle to change one's life. The touching quality of each story resonates with an honesty, an openness, and a desperate day-to-day struggle to grow spiritually while facing the devastation caused by their behavior. The book does not purport to see them in any other light than souls who are committed to working diligently, with guidance and supervision, to become redeemed.The last three stories are those of victims. Again, the purpose is not to castigate the perpetrators, but to show that life does not end, nor does it have to be permanently crippled the by abuse. Quite the contrary, through counseling, prayer and the tenacity of the human spirit, these three former victims have become strong, productive, spiritual energies who have created positive changes not only for themselves but in the work they care called to do. The abuse they suffered no long shackles them but indeed has created roots from which new life has emerged.Broken Trust can re-formulate in the mind a different framework or lens through which to view this crisis in the Catholic Church. It certainly does not condone the actions of the perpetrators but opens a vista where one can see both sides of the picture with new eyes.Every Catholic who has been aware of the abuse crisis in the Church within the last twenty years as revealed primarily in the media would benefit from this book. It may well be the only book that challenges us to understand the woundedness on both sides of the issue. The authors, Patrick Fleming, Sue Lauber-Fleming and Mark Matousek make a profound statement to the church that, "The new story needs to include the victims' voices and minister to their needs. It needs also to incorporate the story of the priest abusers and their own history of being abused and vicimiszed, allowing greater ministry to their needs as well. It needs to include a re-humanizing dialogue between victims, victim-abusers and Church leaders. It requires accountabiliy and forgiveness, truth, and reconciliation.
