This book was recommended to me by a very eminent neurology attending. Excellent and well-researched critique on the management of whiplash, and secondary gain. At times the author did seem overly pessimistic of the motives of healthcare workers and patients, but as I read on I could see why he felt so emphatically - he relays stories of "seat sales" where people would deliberately crash cars into unsuspecting occupied vehicles, often leading to severe injuries in those passengers who were intentionally struck by the inciting vehicle. It was gut-wrenching to think that someone would put others at risk in that way, often leading to severe injuries in the innocently struck car. I do think that most people (patients and physicians alike) are not deliberately trying to capitalize on the insurance system and that he tended to highlight anecdotes that represented pretty egregious cases of fraud. I think from the standpoint of physicians, pain is inherently a subjective experience of the patient and we are obligated, at least until proven otherwise, to give benefit of the doubt and work up symptoms earnestly. I do agree there are a lot of psychosocial aspects of pain, and often traumatic memories about the inciting event seem to contribute, which are often challenging to treat and can be frustrating to both parties. I thought overall this was a well-researched book, and raised a lot of great points about healthcare economics and cost efficiency, but seemed very fixated on the insurance fraud aspect.

This book criticizes those who suffer whiplash injury. It ignores that whiplash can lead to disc injury in the neck, fibromyalgai, tempormandibular joint dsyfunction, and traumatic brain injury. It is scientifically flawed and fails to consider the science now know. It is written at the behest of the insurance industry so they can refuse to pay or underpay claims. Most people with whiplash do recover within six months or shorter. However the unlucky ones can go on to develop permanent injury like traumatic brain injury, fibromyalgia, or disc injury. Please note that whiplash can cause a fractured neck which can lead to any injury up to quadriplegia. This book does an incredible disservice to injured people.

I have only read the synopsis of the book and the customer reviews. I have 11 years experience as an Industrial Nurse Case Manager. I wholeheartedly assure the secondary gain issues listed are quite true from 3rd party liability cases, workers' compensation cases and medical malpractice. There are a lot of unethical physicians who will causally relate anything to everything, continue treatment when none is warranted, (one case of mine had physical therapy for 15 years and never improved) and keep persons out of work for no objective reason. This is blatant fraud. Other physicians may innocently do this because they lack knowledge of secondary gain and/or symptom magnification. I try to stay away from this type as well as the hired gun physicians who do reap the financial benefits from insurance companies and are not objective either. The plaintiff attorneys coach their clients to drive up medical costs for increased settlement. All claims are greatly increased when pre-existing psychological conditions/disorders (i.e. depression, anger issues, borderline personality disorder) are present. There is a very significant direct cost to the taxpayer (i.e. federal workers' compensation cases,such as postal workers, shipyard workers, any civil service, etc.)and indirect cost, by our increased purchase costs due to the burden of risng insurance premiums which the company or individual must pay. Thus this affects all of us in a very direct way both monetarily and psychologically (decreased co-worker morale when they see a co-worker getting away with this, increased false claims, again because others see how easy it is for false claims, and anxiety caused by job loss when the company closes because they can no longer afford their premiums). I also think other factors color this situation as the general population's work ethic has spiraled downward while their sense of entitlement has sharply increased. This is the real world, not embellished opinion.

Memoirs are difficult to rate because they are so personal. As is this one. By the time you finish the book, you've marched through Lubbeck's entire life, not just his service on the Eastern front. This is the central worth of this book. He fights across Europe and Russia. He witnesses Germany's defeat. Then, like all the surviving German peoples, he struggles to save his family. He moves to Canada and proves his worth as a new immigrant. He moves again and again, switching jobs, building his skill and resume. He moves to the United States and finds the new life he had been searching for. This is a story quite relevant even to this day.

This is a very readable book about the military service in WWII of a German enlisted man, later promoted to a company-grade officer, and, briefly, about his post-war life. Although much of the book is about the author's service with Army Group North, there are also chapters about his recruit training, and subsequent service in France from May 1940 onwards, as well as officer training in the midst of the war. Readers interested in the German Army should find this very useful. I found this a better book than several other memoirs of "common" soldiers, and hence the five stars.

When I was in school, I learned that the difference between an autobiography and a memior was principally one of focus. An autobiography is the story of your life, and a memior is the story of one particular aspect of your life. Although the line is not always clear, it remains an important distinction, because most people's working life is far more interesting than their daily one. The biography of a test-pilot whose hobby is planting geraniums would probably be less interesting than his memior. I've found this true of German WW2 writings as well. With some exceptions, guys like Hans Rudel, Günther Koschorrek, and F.W. von Mellenthin, who stick largely to their combat experiences, tend to be somewhat more interesting than guys like Klaus Häberlin, Philip Freiherr von Boeselager, or Georg Grossjohan, who paint with a much broader brush.AT LENINGRAD'S GATES is a biography, or at least more of a biography than it is a memior, and because of this, I found it less interesting, taken as a whole, than some of the other books I just mentioned. While no means without merit, and in many instances quite gripping and even horrifying, it is important for the reader to know going in that in this book, he is dealing with the sum of a man's life and not just the "hot lead and cold steel" part of it.Wilhelm Lübbecke was born in Püggen, a farming town in north-central Germany, just two years after the end of the Great War. His parents were hard-working, religious, conservative-minded folk who instilled the same sort of values in their son, values which stood him in good stead during the Great Depression. Because of these values, he never warmed to the Nazis, but like most Germans was more than willing to fight for his country's interests when the war broke out in 1939. Seeing his first action in France as a private soldier, Lübbecke was sent east in 1941 to participate in the invasion of Russia, and somehow survived the entire campaign, including the calamitous last days of April and May, 1945, rising to the rank of captain in the process. After the war he consummated his years-long romance with sweetheart Annalise, and then engaged in the bitter postwar struggle against starvation, finally electing to emigrate to Canada in 1951 to find work. At last achieving success as an engineer, he eventually moved to America, bcame a citizen, raised a family, and retired in good health - a rather remarkable example of the American dream in action.Lübbecke's war service was entirely with the 58th Division, which belonged to Army Group North, the group of German forces which besieged Leningrad from 1941 until 1944 (hence the title of the book). A veteran of such horrible battles as Demyansk and Wolchow, he has many great anecdotes to relate - calling down artillery fire on Soviet tanks, listening as Red Army soldiers shouted over No Man's Land that they were going to mutilate his corpse, fleeing enemy capture on the deck of a Navy destroyer -- but his tendency to speak in generalities sometimes gives the book a disconnected feeling, almost as if he is using conventional history texts to fill the gaps in his memory. What's more, while almost every chapter is seemingly devoted to his military service, and while Lübbecke himself was obviously a superb soldier, he was by temperament a romantic whose heart was not in the war, but rather back home with his beloved Annalise. As a result, his war experiences often come off rather flat, while the passages about home and family tend to have more passion. This creates the false, but strong, impression, that one is reading much more about his family life and much less about his military one. What's more, Lübbecke spends quite a bit of time insisting that he was not a Nazi, that no German soldiers he knew were Nazis, that nobody was fighting for Nazism but only for Germany, etc., etc. This may in fact be his experience, but he resorts to the mantra so frequently it becomes a bit tedious.I don't want to discourage anyone from reading this book. Quite the contrary. If you want to read the saga (and it really is a saga) of Wilhelm Lübbecke, who began his life as a Prussian farm-boy in the 1920s, and finally ended up as the patriotic American citizen "William Lubbeck" in the 1960s, while earning himself an Iron Cross in between, then this is for you. If you want nonstop action, or a book that simply immerses you in German military life without "emotional distraction", I'd suggest Kurt Meyer or Gottlob Bidermann.

The author was a German farm boy with an eye for engineering and leadership so joining the army and then getting sent off to fight the Russians offered an exciting, if dangerous life. As he tells his personal story, we learn about life in a rural German town and on the farm, the conservative social constructs of relationships, and rather traditional but honest parents with no time for the Nazis and, later, Soviet occupiers. And there is nice love story and success in the new world. The shock that the love of his life kept a picture of Hitler on her wall. Probably a pretty ordinary story told in a straightforward and simple way.We so often get clobbered with war stories told by historians looking at the big picture who regale us with monumental facts, battles, generals, outcomes, footnotes.....this story takes us down in the direction of the trenches, on-the-ground decision making and logistics, the comparative freedom German officers had to make decisions, and quite believable observations on the aspirations and attitudes of the guys in the German, and I suspect most militaries, at that time. And in our time when I suspect that our troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan care less about background politics than meeting personal goals and staying alive. Perhaps so hardened to day to day survival they don't see the atrocities perpetrated in the name of their cause; a cause they may not see beyond inherent patriotism, a need for a job, or just being macho.OK. So far so good. I like it when engineers and military people put on a very human face, which is what we have here. I like it when the writer takes the time to explain the structure of the German army, and discusses its weapons, front line strategies and even the reliance on horses in modern warfare.But then....having been deep in some of the literature of the Leningrad siege and the march of the Red Army to Germany, and having been to St. Petersburg recently, I would have liked a little more of that old saw CONTEXT, a context which was complex and, in terms of German atrocities, horrific. A chapter on the overall siege with some numbers (something like 600,000 resident deaths the first year), the massacres of Jews and common citizens in Leningrad suburbs, and the destruction and looting of magnificent palaces would be very helpful. A good map on where, exactly, the author was stationed. A few more words about the overall logistical system, railroads, etc. Without some of this the narrative feels at times to be a bit too benign. This is not to suggest that the overall perspective here is inaccurate. But I find it hard to believe some of the horrors were not seen first hand, and discussed. Or that none of the officers here were Nazis. Or that the Nazis refused to have East Prussia evacuated until the very tragic end was simply left unsaid. We get temptingly close here in some of the narrative: sympathy to the guys on the Russian side, commentary on why Germans fell for the Nazis (mainly Western betrayals...), on how the average German really didn't know about concentration camps and genocide, and so on. His slave laborers were the captured who worked on his dad's farm, not the hundreds of thousands who labored in factories, and died in them.I'm sure there are more complicated and complete soldier biographies from World War II, and I'm sure we'll be getting a slew from our troops in recent wars. Were I advising them I would suggest they read this book to be sure the human side comes through, and it is a human side that makes this a very good read. But not quite an excellent one.

11/20/2017: The book is well-written in excellent English grammar. Non of the typical poor grammar such as "I've got to do this" instead of "I have to do this." Also no singular to plural bad grammar such as "If you see a person driving badly, tell them not to" instead of writing "tell him/her" or "tell the person." The chronology is well-developed. Finally, the story is captivating from beginning to end. Good job Herr Lubbeck.

About the Author

David Haber, PhD , is an assistant professor in the Gerontology Department at Western Oregon University, Monmouth, Oregon. Prior to his current affiliation he worked at several institutes of higher education. For a decade he was the John and Janice Fisher distinguished professor of wellness and gerontology at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. For the decade prior to that, Dr. Haber was a professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Before that he served as the director of the Center for Healthy Aging, at Creighton University’s multidisciplinary shopping mall–based geriatric center in Omaha, Nebraska. His early academic and research career included positions at the University of the District of Columbia; the University of South Florida, Tampa; and the University of Southern California, where he also received his PhD in sociology from the Andrus Gerontology Center. Dr. Haber is a fellow in the Gerontological Society of America, and he is recognized for two Best Practice Awards from the National Council on Aging, the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, and the Molly Mettler Award for Leadership in Health Promotion from the National Council on Aging. The third edition of this book, Health Promotion and Aging, was selected for the 2004 Book of the Year Award by theAmerican Journal of Nursing in two categories: Gerontologic Nursing, and Community and Public Health. Dr. Haber also authored Health Care for an Aging Society. In the early twentieth century one of the best jobs young girls and women in America could have involved something exciting and brand new: radium. Sparkling, glowing, and beautiful, radium was also, according to the companies that employed these young women, completely harmless. A century later the truth about radium and its assorted isotopes is all too well known. In The Radium Girls Kate Moore tells the story of these young women, seemingly so fortunate, who were poisoned by the jobs they felt so lucky to have.Radium was widely heralded as a wondrous new substance after it was first isolated by the Curies. It appeared to have an infinite number of uses, one of the first of which was to make the numbers on clocks and watches easier to see. Workers were needed to coat the dials with radium paint, and the best and most efficient workers were women and girls, some as young as 14 or 15. The work was pleasant and sociable: the women sat around tables painting, moistening the thin brushes in their mouths before they dipped them into the paint, chatting, eating, and drinking while they worked, sometimes taking extra paint home with them to practice with, sometimes painting their teeth, faces, hair, and clothing to make them sparkly. When they left the studio their clothing would be covered with radium dust, and would glow ghost-like in the night. The pay was good and the work was easy, but then some of the women started having strange pains in their mouths and bones. Their teeth would loosen and fall out and their jaws, legs, and ankles would develop permanent aches or even crumble.After some of the women died and more became ill the companies making large profits on radium rushed to dismiss any hint that the work was unsafe. Victims and their families sought relief and assistance, but found they were responsible for their own mounting medical bills. The federal, state, and local governments all disavowed any responsibility. Eventually publicity stemming from lawsuits filed by some of the victims (using their own scanty resources) focused enough attention on the problem that governments felt compelled to set safety standards and regulations.The Radium Girls is a horrifying read. The careless ways in which radium was handled, the indifference of the radium using industries and the governments involved to the safety of the women painters (in contrast to the men who worked to produce the radium, who were protected by lead shields), and the pain and suffering of the women themselves are appalling. The safety regulations and restrictions which were finally put into place hardly seem adequate, and the Epilogue and Postscript giving details of the women's later lives, as well as an account of another industry that made careless use of radium as late as the 1970s, are especially harrowing.This is a well written, meticulously research and documented, account of tragedies that never should have been. The radium girls' lives can't be returned to them, but thanks to Kate Moore we can remember, and learn, from their pain.

One of the best books I have read in a long time! Telling the story of the Radium Girls from the standpoint of the girls/women who were victimized by corporate greed and their battle for their rights was wonderful. Kate Moore brought these brave women to light in a brilliant manner. I had trouble putting this book down and highly recommend it.

I just got through reading Radium Girls based the the true story of the girls and women employed to paint watch dials in the early twentieth century with an exciting and new product, radium. Radium sparkled, glowed, and was thought to be good for your health. It was heralded as the worlds newest wonder!! One of the uses was to make watches and clocks easier to see because the radium made the dial light up in the dark. Girls as young as 14 were recruited to join in on the exciting new job opportunity. Girls and young women sat in rows with trays of watch dials with a crucible of radium. They were taught to moisten thin brushes in their mouthes before they dipped them into the paint. They even ate at their work benches. The radium dust would cover the workers and as they walked home at night the girls would actually GLOW. Every girl wanted in on the work as it was good pay and radium was said to be good for your health. Little did they know that the work they were doing was eventually going to lead to their own demise.This book is excellent and gives amazing historical background pertaining to the inauguration of workers compensation, liability, and medical advancements. It is definitely a very emotional charged book. I would highly recommend this book.

If only the women were shown this level of respect in their lifetimes. Their story shines from the pages and is horrifyingly relevant to today. We owe these ladies an enormous debt and it our duty to see it is repaid by never allowing it to be repeated.

The storyteller is often witty (sometimes downright funny). Yet his tale is full of revealing dialogue, observations, and emotions that not only drive the story... it sets the scenes so clearly, reading is like watching the events happen in person. I really liked all the Falconer books I've read (I expect I'll like more); but this one is going to rank as my favorite. It's one-of-a-kind. "Joan of Woodstock" doesn't have the historical celebrity status of an Elizabeth I, or Catherine d'Medici; but I'm betting you'll learn something, and be entertained in the process!

Edmund of Woodstock was 1st Earl of Kent, the son of Longshanks Edward I of England and half-brother to Edward II, who executed his half-brother when Edmund was only 29, leaving two children, Joan and her older brother Edmund. Edmund's wife Margaret, pregnant when her husband was beheaded, is soon delivered of their third child, John. Joan is beautiful, but only thirteen years old, attached to King Edward I’s household as the young king seeks allies in France for his quest to become King of France as well as England. This is where the plot thickens, as Joan encounters, falls in love with, and secretly marries a minor noble, Thomas Holand, a knight in Edward’s army. Secretly because Edward is thinking to marry her to a French noble’s son as a way to make a loyal ally for his campaign. Things do not go well on the campaign, and Edward abandons the plan, returns to England, where Lord and Lady Salisbury decide this young woman with royal blood will be a good match for their son William. Joan’s refusal extends to many years, and her ghostly father suffers as she is forced to allow the Salisburys’ plan to move forward. I recommend the book.Joan is the daughter of Edmund and the niece of King Edward of England. She loves Thomas Holand who wants to marry her for her money, andl so they wed when she is only thirteen years old. William has money and title, and Joan is forced into a marriage with him. For ten years she waits to have the marriage to William annulled. Read the book for the rest of the story.Colin Falconer is an excellent writer and is deserving of five stars and the moon for this b ook. He does not jumble the book with too many characters or storylines. He develops the main characters and action through Joan's father who keeps an eye on Joan from the other sideThank you, Mr. Falconer, for a good read.

Awesome book. I liked how her dead dad was telling the story. I like Colin falconers books. Excellent stories. Great writing.

I found the story entertaining, but was not fond of the unusual perspective of the dead father as the narrator.

I really enjoyed the book. Joan caused such a scandal with her marriages, but at the end, she triumphs. The unusual thing about this book is that it is written in 1st person from Joan's father's point of view--he is dead!

Not really the entertaining novel type that I was looking for. All right, I guess.

I decided to purchase this book based on a recommendation from another book I was reading and because I enjoy Christine Valters Paintner's style of writing and her focus on wisdom teaching. There are so many wonderful quotes and comments hidden inside these pages. Paintner has taken ancient sayings from seemingly austere origins, then masterfully brought them into our century. Ancient truths, simply, are truths in any time. I recommend reading this book each morning, move throughout the day meditating on the passage and let it become part of you. Good reading!

This book introduced me to a segment of Christian thought I was unfamiliar with. The introduction to this book is outstanding. Some of the commentary by Christine Paintner was obviously biased by her own views, and missed the mark. But overall,a book that is worth reading for Christians who want to go deeper, and enjoy contemplation.

This is a book that calls us back to the essential wisdom discovered by those brave early Christians, who found something ever ancient and ever new in the deserts. A wonderfully presented volume, it reminds me of the basics of life. It is a resource for all who wish to make their lives centred on the will of the God of many names.
