It's not a surprise that Colin Falconer is a great author. This particular book IS a great surprise. The story is told from a most unusual perspective. The storyteller is often witty (sometimes downright funny). Yet his tale is full of revealing dialogue, observations, and emotions that not only drive the story... it sets the scenes so clearly, reading is like watching the events happen in person. I really liked all the Falconer books I've read (I expect I'll like more); but this one is going to rank as my favorite. It's one-of-a-kind. "Joan of Woodstock" doesn't have the historical celebrity status of an Elizabeth I, or Catherine d'Medici; but I'm betting you'll learn something, and be entertained in the process!
Edmund of Woodstock was 1st Earl of Kent, the son of Longshanks Edward I of England and half-brother to Edward II, who executed his half-brother when Edmund was only 29, leaving two children, Joan and her older brother Edmund. Edmund's wife Margaret, pregnant when her husband was beheaded, is soon delivered of their third child, John. Joan is beautiful, but only thirteen years old, attached to King Edward I’s household as the young king seeks allies in France for his quest to become King of France as well as England. This is where the plot thickens, as Joan encounters, falls in love with, and secretly marries a minor noble, Thomas Holand, a knight in Edward’s army. Secretly because Edward is thinking to marry her to a French noble’s son as a way to make a loyal ally for his campaign. Things do not go well on the campaign, and Edward abandons the plan, returns to England, where Lord and Lady Salisbury decide this young woman with royal blood will be a good match for their son William. Joan refuses, angering the Salisburys and endangering her mother’s plans to save the family’s fortunes. Her father’s ghost pities the situation of dear daughter, but admires her courage and loyalty to Holand. Joan’s refusal extends to many years, and her ghostly father suffers as she is forced to allow the Salisburys’ plan to move forward. Joan is neither vain, nor in any way indecent, we discover, in Falconer’s account.
I recommend the book.Joan is the daughter of Edmund and the niece of King Edward of England. She loves Thomas Holand who wants to marry her for her money, andl so they wed when she is only thirteen years old. William has money and title, and Joan is forced into a marriage with him. For ten years she waits to have the marriage to William annulled. Read the book for the rest of the story.Colin Falconer is an excellent writer and is deserving of five stars and the moon for this b ook. He does not jumble the book with too many characters or storylines. He develops the main characters and action through Joan's father who keeps an eye on Joan from the other sideThank you, Mr. Falconer, for a good read.
Awesome book. I liked how her dead dad was telling the story. I like Colin falconers books. Excellent stories. Great writing.
I found the story entertaining, but was not fond of the unusual perspective of the dead father as the narrator.
I really enjoyed the book. Joan caused such a scandal with her marriages, but at the end, she triumphs. The unusual thing about this book is that it is written in 1st person from Joan's father's point of view--he is dead!
Not really the entertaining novel type that I was looking for. All right, I guess.
