Review

"[Nothing but the Night] ranks alongside Conrad Aiken's ghostly "Silent Snow, Secret Snow" as a study in madness...An affecting but sometimes tentative portrait of mental illness." —Kirkus Reviews The Williams revival is outright gratifying: it feels something like justice in a world badly deprived of it—justice for this sapient, deep-seeing novelist almost incapable of composing a bum sentence." —William Gerald, Los Angeles Review of Books

About the Author

John Williams (1922–1994) was born and raised in northeast Texas. Despite a talent for writing and acting, he flunked out of a local junior college after his first year. He reluctantly joined the war effort, enlisting in the Army Air Corps, and managed to write a draft of his first novel. Once home, Williams found a small publisher for the novel and enrolled at the University of Denver, where he was eventually to receive both his BA and MA, and where he was to return as an instructor in 1954 and remain on the staff of the creative writing program until his retirement in 1985. During these years, he was an active guest lecturer and writer, editing an anthology of English Renaissance poetry and publishing two volumes of his own poems, as well as three novels, Butcher’s Crossing, Stoner, and the National Book Award–winning Augustus (all published as NYRB Classics). English Renaissance Poetry, edited by Williams, is also available from NYRB Classics.

It is almost impossible to believe that this is the same John Williams who wrote "Stoner," "Butcher's Crossing" and "Augustus." All those are fine, even extraordinary---in very different ways. This slim novelette is dreadful. A totally unconvincing exercise in ANGST that contains elements of J. Alfred Prufrock, Camus, and the pulp, noirish fiction of the 1930s and 1940s. It should be read only to see how far Williams traveled as a creative force from this pathetic effort to the masterpiece that is "Stoner." M. Stephen Miller

“Nothing But the Night” is a gripping existential tale of a man wrestling with the plagues of 20th (21st relevant as well) century consciousness, trauma, and depression. Although this book has been received as depressive, it is beautifully written, while interspersing a wide array of metaphors and symbolism revealing the human condition. Much like “Stoner” by John Williams, the protagonist of this tale goes through life as a participant rather than a go-getter. Stoner much like Maxley functions as a cog in the machine which is life, consciousness, and mere existence. With that said, Stoner and Maxley go about existence in very different ways. Stoner was likely written later in Williams career symbolizing Williams won maturity and growth as opposed to rebellion. “Nothing but the Night” is a must read for those John Williams enthusiasts longing to know a little more about “the best author you never heard of.”On a final note: I highly encourage the reader to examine to the very informative Q&A between interviewer and John William’s wife.***Spoiler***Although the ending has a cruel and unacceptable altercation, it can be taken as a metaphor of the danger of not having love, closure and acceptance in one’s life. Maxley is faced with an unforgettable tragedy (mom’s suicide & shooting of father) which alters his ability to experience connectivity with others. When the awful altercation happens between him and Claire, perhaps it is symbolic of his past haunting his present. While he is unable to rectify the death of his mother with his hatred unto his father, he ultimately cannot move forward with any form of love. In essence, Claire may not literally be a person he has met but rather a representation of him killing future prospects of romance and trust due to his past. The man beating him senselessly at the end, is a final symbol of the world and society’s punishment of being violent and ultimately a punishment of never letting go of the past.

This is a sad a short story, which I found not particularly well written or interesting in regards of the plot, but full of brilliant sentences, that made it worth reading. Not the John Williams I was used to, but still a novel from the author of Stoner and Butcher Crossing.

Arthur Maxley wakes in his room, which he thinks is like his soul--dirty and disarranged. Shrugging off that thought, he slaps cold water on his face and determines to go for a walk. But he never gets to his destination, sidetracked to a cafe. His egg makes him think of an evil eye and depressed by the little cafe and ends up back home, the windows in his building seeming to leer at him. Maxley's nerves are disturbed by memories. Everything he encounters is magnified in grotesque ways, like circus sideshow mirrors, reflecting his inner world.Every word in John Williams' novel Nothing Like the Night reveals Maxley's claustrophobic and overwrought psyche, the story culminating in the revelation of the horror Maxley witnessed and his irrational acting out of his trauma. Is this book by the same man who created William Stoner in Stoner, the novel so constrained and elegant, austere and yet moving? Both novels are dark, but Stoner's resolution is comforting in his final acceptance of his life. Night leaves the protagonist still lost in the dark. Violence becomes his speech and there is no health in him.Nothing But the Night was Williams' first novel, written during the war when he flew supplies "over the hump" and saw his fellow soldiers die. Only a mentor with a small press believed in him enough to publish this novel. Williams learned from his mistakes and went on to write "the perfect novel" Stoner and the National Book Award winner Augustus. It was fascinating to read this early novel, at once a failure and yet showing Williams ability with words and insight into human nature. The story is disturbing and memorable, a psychological noir more suited for 2018 than 1948.I received a free ebook from the publisher through Edelweiss in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

About the Author

Flavius Josphus (c. A.D. 37-100) was born to an aristocratic Jewish family, served as a priest, and later became the commander of Jewish forces in Galilee following the revolt against Rome that began A.D. 66. Captured by the Romans, Josephus spent his later life in Rome under the patronage of the Roman emperors where he composed his history of the Jewish people and his account of the Jewish war that led to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in A.D. 70.

This is a very complete book of the history from 30 AD going forward. Its a read that you set out on like a journey. Some days you read 10 pages and some days 20 but beyond that it takes time to assemble what was taking place shortly after the death of Christ. Its important to know as it leads into the discussions and theories of why in the 3rd century the collection of writings and readings became the bible. Read as many of the non books of the bible before you start this. It will give you a better back ground of the various views that were taking place and then read this so that you can grasp the history of the times.

Very pleased with this purchase. The book is a very interesting read. I loved the extra features provided, like tables that show you the parallel account in the Bible. A well constructed book too. Would definitely recommend if you have any interest in the Bible or Jewish history.

while a solidly bound book, and no doubt an authentic translation, it is translated in old English style, very difficult to understand for the modern English speaker. I would recommend other translations. my version sits unused as I order another of a modern translation.

THE NEW COMPLETE WORKS OF JOSEPHUSIf you have an avid interest in ancient history, especially the history of the Old Testament, the intertestament period between the Old and New Testaments, the events leading up to the final destruction of Jerusalem and the last stand of the Jewish zealots at Masada, then this is the book for you.Josephus was an unusual man who survived the ravishes of the war with the Romans and became the chronicler of Jewish and Roman history. He was a Jewish General feared and admired by his enemies, the Romans. When he was captured, calls for his execution went unheeded. He gave up the sword soaked in Roman blood to take up the pen of a historian. Some of his countrymen viewed him as a traitor.Within these pages are tales of intrigue in the royal courts, the madness of kings, the senseless slaughter of men, women and children, and interwoven with the great figures of history. Some passages are extremely long and border on tedium to the nth degree. However, even the tedium of details is worth the read.Other passages are just fascinating- Moses, the General of Egypt's army, wins a war against Ethiopians and marries Tharbis, Princess of Ethiopia. Their descendents would rule Ethiopia for centuries. There is a lot of sadness in these pages, especially the final destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. The Jewish nation was decimated in the first century. The last bastion of Jewish resistance was a thousand men, women and children who made their heroic stand against the approaching legions. The fateful decision by the leaders of Masada as the Romans prepared for the final assault will not only touch the heart, but it will reaffirm a basic principle of the human spirit- it is better to die free than become a slave of the oppressor. These stories and many others are found in these 1000 plus pages. This is a serious work for the equally serious reader.

I bought this for my Mother. I read a bit before I took it to her. I found it to be interesting not withstanding that I did not necessarily agree with his "take" on scripture. When Christians read this they need to understand that this will not necessarily be in agreement with traditional Christian views. None the less, it is a great insight to how the Hebrew people thought.I thought it was a very good historical view of Hebrew attitude and how it came about, at least from my Christian perspective. Knowing how people think helps to understand their reactions to others. There were alot of good footnotes that helps Christians understand the Hebrew line of thinking.I would recommend this highly to any one interested in history and understanding a different perspective on scripture.

I'm not quite sure how to place "The New Complete Works of Josephus" (Kregel Academic & Professional, 1999) among other editions of Josephus that are available. This work is a "revised" version of Whiston's 1737 translation, which has been "corrected" to an unknown degree by Paul L. Maier.Besides Josephus' writings, the book includes 7 "dissertations" on the text by Whiston such as "The testimonies of Josephus concerning Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, and James the Just, vindicated". These along with the footnotes reveal a translator anxious to defend the authenticity of his source text(s), the historical accuracy of Josephus, the correspondence of Josephus's accounts with the Old and New Testament, etc.Whiston seems to have a vested interest in Josephus as supporting and supplementing various Biblical accounts. He definitely comments upon the work from a Christian (he was actually an Arian) rather than a purely critical perspective. However, I see no reason at this time to believe this infects his translation with bias.Assuming that "Complete Works" has been completely corrected, it's greatest failing is being very difficult to read. Apparently, Whiston had something against periods, but really loved semicolons. Many a sentence runs on and on to paragraph length. The syntax is tortuous. The same publisher has two other editions of Josephus that are very different from Complete Works, yet seem very similar to each other. These are "Essential Works" (Josephus: The Essential Works) and "Essential Writings" (Josephus: The Essential Writings). Both are current editions using a translation by Paul L. Maier. The following is a sample of Maier's new translation followed by Whiston's. The text corresponds to Loeb Bk. VI, Ch. 14, 374-378From "Josephus: The Essential Writings", Kregel, 1990, ISBN 0825429641 (Maier translation)The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the bodies of the slain, they found those of Saul and his sons, and they cut off their heads and impaled their bodies on the walls of Bethshan. But when the Israelites of Jabesh-Gilead learned about this mutilation, the bravest of them marched all night to Bethshan, removed the bodies of Saul and his sons, and carried them to Jabesh, where they buried them. The enemy was either not able or not bold enough to stop them, because of their great courage.Saul came to this end, as Samuel had predicted, because of his disobedience regarding the Amalekites and his destruction of the high priest and his family. He reigned eighteen years during the lifetime of Samuel, and 22 more after his death. From "The New Complete Works of Josephus", Kregel, 1999, ISBN 0825429242 ("corrected" Whiston translation)On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip their enemies that were killed, they got the bodies of Saul and of his sons, and stripped them, and cut off their heads; and they sent messengers all about their country, to acquaint them that their enemies were fallen; and they dedicated their armor in the temple of Astarte, but hung their bodies on crosses at the walls of the city Beth Shan, which is now called Scythopolis. But when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard that they had dismembered the dead bodies of Saul and of his sons, they deemed it so horrid a thing to overlook this barbarity, and to suffer them to be without funeral rites, that the most courageous and hardy among them (and indeed that city had in it men that were very stout both in body and mind) journeyed all night, and came to Beth Shan, and approached the enemy's wall, and taking down the bodies of Saul and of his sons they caried them to Jabesh, while the enemy was not able enough or bold enough to hinder them, because of their great courage. So the people of Jabesh all wept and buried their bodies in the best place of their country, which was named Aroura; and they observed a public mourning for them seven days, with their wives and children, beating their breasts, and lamenting the king and his sons, without either tasting meat or drink [until evening].To this his end did Saul come, according to the prophecy of Samuel, because he disobeyed the commands of God about the Amalekites, and on the account of his destroying the family of Ahimelech the high priest, with Ahimelech himself, and the city of the high priests. Now Saul when he had reigned eighteen years while Samuel was alive, and after his death two [and twenty], ended his life in this manner.Even granting that the Maier translation is abridged, you can see that the Whiston translation suffers pitifully where readability is concerned. If you're still with me I'd say this. If you can afford it and need the complete works, buy the Loeb editions. I can't personally vouch for them, but in the introduction to "Complete Works" Maier himself states that those represent the "best English translation".If you don't need each and every line and want text you can actually parse, perhaps you should buy "Essential Works" or "Essential Writings". I can't tell you which, since I don't have them and I'm mystified as to what the difference might be. Of course, there are other translations and editions from other publishers of repute that are certainly comparable in readability. If you need (or want) every line for a very economical price, "Complete Works" will do.Good luck reading it.

From Publishers Weekly

Bernstein, a neurologist who suffered her first migraines in her 20s, teaches at Harvard Medical School and is on staff at the Cambridge Health Alliance, where she founded the Women's Headache Center. With journalist McArdle, she presents a clear and comprehensive analysis of the migraine brain. Noting that there are about 30 million migraine sufferers in the U.S., Bernstein reveals that migraine is a complex neurological disease that affects the central nervous system. A severe headache is just one of its symptoms: others may be nausea, vomiting, visual changes or sensitivity to light or sound: the authors help readers identify the triggers that can bring on an attack (such as stress, insufficient sleep, menstrual periods or a host of other factors). Bernstein then helps the migraineur develop a personalized plan to prevent, abort, or rescue. The authors include research on the new triptan meds, which can interrupt the neurochemical reaction of an attack and halt a migraine in its tracks, as well as info on preventive medications (i.e., beta-blockers and antidepressants) and such alternative methods as biofeedback and acupuncture. Bernstein approaches the reader as she might patients—creatively, scientifically and sympathetically—offering a range of tactics and treatments to help migraine sufferers control and mitigate their pain. I have been a migraine sufferer for many years and since I hit my 40's they have gotten so much worse been so disruptive to my every day life. I've pretty much tried every medication and therapy there is to try and I was and still am so frustrated at the inability to treat my migraines. However reading Dr. Bernstein's book was such an eye opener for me. I felt she had a true compassion and understanding for migraine patients and I was impressed at how she explained the migraine brain and what triggers migraines for so many people. She draws on her knowledge of so many years and gives examples of patients she has treated which really humanizes what so many migraine sufferers experience. It can be such an isolating condition to have, as many people who do not suffer from migraines cannot possibly understand how debilitating and disruptive they can be to your life. I am currently being treated at the Stanford Headache Clinic and even though they are probably one most well known institutions out there I don't feel that I got the same in depth explanations as to my condition EVER. I have kept a migraine diary for years and nobody at the clinic or even any of the many neurologists or doctors I have seen over the years have ever really took the time to review it. I had to figure out myself that my migraines were hormonally triggered and be my own advocate to try to find a solution to my problem. Popping different pills is not really the answer. Now after reading this book, I found I have a whole new set of knowledge that I can use to try to get past chornic migraines. So to all the migraine sufferers out there - I highly recommend this book!

I've had migraines for 15 years. I didn't learn anything new from this book, but I found it to be a realistic, practical guide for managing migraines. I appreciated the alternative treatments that were discussed, since I am currently pregnant and can't/won't take medications, and nothing I've tried ever really worked for me anyway. I've found that a dark room and an ice pack does wonders. I would have to disagree with the author about food triggers though... she asserts that a food is only a trigger if you get a migraine within 2 hours of eating it. I am definitely affected much longer than 2 hours after ingesting my triggers, can be up to 12 hours for me.

I've suffered from migraines for 25 years now. There's things in this book that I have never had my doctors or neurologists tell me. It explains so much! I've always felt that my migraines were linked to certain parts of my body, but doctors haven't listened to me. I found some helpful advice that I've been able to put to good use to reduce attacks and relieve pressure/pain. I've recommended it to my sisters who all also suffer from migraines.

I have been suffering from Migraines since the age of 10 and I have to say that this book is one of the best on the subject. Having lived with migraines for some time I have amassed a library of reference material to help me understand the condition. The book does a really good job at explaining what is going on in your brain and the treatments available. The chapters are well organized and one does not have to read the book in order to seek the information you need. Overall very satisfied with the purchase and this is one of the books I will maintain as an excellent resource.

I've had migraines most of my life, but until a few years ago, only occasionally, and with easily identifiable triggers. That changed, and migraines took over my life. After one particularly debiliating migraine, I knew I had to do something. I thought I understood migraines, but I realized how little I knew when I read this well-written and well-organized book. Got it first from the library, then ordered a copy for myself to study. I will be using it as a template as I work with my physician to develop a plan to manage my migraines, and hopefully return my life to something closer to normal. Dr. Bernstein wrote about migraine in ways that I immediately identified with, taught me many things about it I did not know, showed me how to keep a headache diary, and what signs to look for that could help me "catch" my migraines earlier, and thus minimize their impact on my life. The book explains about different types of medicine and other options for treatment, so that as my doctor and I develop my plan, I can be an informed participant. Already I have noticed some improvements, and have adapted the sample charts in the book for my own circumstances. Certainly, I am much more aware of what my body and brain are trying to tell me. It gives me optimism that my life can open up again. And it impressed my doctor that I had already begun keeping the kind of records he needs to help me sort things out!

Will finish reading it because I paid for it but not really a great book. It was just a continuous promotion of herself and the book. There were some good examples but I would definitely get something more current. The pharmacotherapy options in this book is already outdated.

Very informative book. Some of the information I was aware of, but there was much that I did not know. This is a very helpful book when getting ready for Dr. appointments. I sent copies to family members that also suffer from migraines. I'm very glad someone who suffers from migraines and also has the ability to write such a helpful book has taken the time to do so.

This is an absolutely fascinating book about a condition that has been a problem for most of my life. I have long felt that migraines almost had to be genetic, and here is proof. I have confirmed four generations, from my maternal grandmother to my mother, to myself and one of my daughters, who have all experienced these debilitating headaches. Very honestly, I would never wish this kind of pain on my worst enemy. It's just not a fun way to spend time.

Review

"The unexpected connections made by Day are linked creatively with the sound logic of a true authority. At one point he juxtaposes Oscar Wilde and Public Enemy and questions man's attraction to both seduction and punishment. Embedded in the prose are aphoristic statements, like "to find the future listen for acronyms." Filled with insightful observations on contemporary urbanism, Day is a longtime SCI-Arc professor and has also taught at Yale." – Mike Sonksen, KCET "Highly original and provocative book by LA-based architect Joe Day that explores the societal and architectural connections between two institutions that have expanded tenfold since the 1970s: museums and prisons." – Frances Anderton, Design & Architecture "Joe Day, an accomplished architect and academic teaching at SCI-Arc and Yale, presents a daunting traverse through the dialectical territory between visual pleasure and psychological pain. His taxonomy of meticulous diagrams and carefully curated photographs of the subject buildings relentlessly synthesizes and interrogates the nuances that transect our most dominant socio-cultural edifices within late-capital: museums and prisons." – John Southern, Archinect "…a fascinating new book by Joe Day, an L.A. architect who teaches at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, charts not just the history of jails but the surprisingly broad ― and telling ― overlap between prison and museum design." â€“ Christopher Hawthorne, Los Angeles Times "... Corrections and Collections is an exploration of themese of concealment and display, an intellectual pursuit soon surely to inform new buildings by this enviably erudite architect." - Raymund Ryan, The Architectural Review

Corrections and Collections will make you think twice about the architecture of institutions--jails and museums-- that anchor both ends of our urban landscape...and what they oddly have in common. The scope of this work is focused on America, but goes global with comparisons with how other cultures deal with fine art and first offenders. Great read!

This guide will fill the bill for short visit. The main problems are that the maps are by neighborhood, and there is no master map to tie them together and make them make sense. Also, he spends a lot of space on admittedly worthless neighborhoods that no one is going to waste valuable time on (in an attempt, I suppose , to be "cool") and he could have used this space to mention worthwhile sites that he omits - like the ceramics museum...

Compact, but packed full of great information.

Pretty good general info. Up to date!

Great guide, fodors is always good to have,

I found the organization of the book less useful then some others. More detailed focus on a neighborhood by neighborhood level would be good.

Easily read.Clear descriptions and directions Gives some good hints

This book is sadly out of date (2014). Also, there is NO information in this book about travelers who have mobility impairments.I was also shocked that they did not include the restaurant that is #48 in the entire world--Tim Raue Restaurant.

We found it very useful.

These texts are treasures of alchemy, philosophy and practical wisdom. They are an attempt to give to the public esoteric wisdom just as the texts themselves were in their day.

So many times, a book is either too scholarly requiring a background in the field, or too elemental and not enough depth. The taoist classics translated by Thomas Cleary assist in understanding the wisdom and a jumping off place for personal application. It gives a perspective, knowing that often there is no English equivalent to the Chinese and often, the original manuscript refers to other eastern teachings and can have multiple levels of meaning and understanding. I appreciate that the author/translator allows for this, giving those of us with a language barrier a glimpse of the truths in these ancient works.

This collection is primarily dedicated to explaining the extensive alchemical metaphors in Tao philosophy. It is primarily sourced from the Complete Reality School.Cleary does a good job with the translations. Uses some big words. May have to refer to dictionary occasionally. This series (volumes 1-4) Should be read in order.Love and Light

Wonderful translation of Taoist Classics to Broaden one's understanding of the Taoist philosophy of living.

Understanding Reality great chapter

This item was sent to a prison inmate, who acknowledges having received it, but provides no other feedback. I assume it satisfactory.

As a Taoist, I really appreciate this four volume set. I have read them all many times.Volume two gives one an insight into the cryptic world of Taoism. The two other five star reviewers were both spot on. The bulk of this book is neo-Taoist coming from the Complete Reality School, a synthesis of Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist thought. Just the introductions to each of the books is worth the price of this book! I just want to add about "The Book of Balance and Harmony" you need to think metaphorically here. If you can do that a whole new world of taoist thought becomes available. Like I said, get all four volumes, this and volume three will help you decode the alchemical language that was used to help keep somethings secret in the old days. Studying Tao can be a little frustrating until you learn to decode some of this stuff."Practical Taoism" too, is one of my favorite texts. "To be insightful but not exploit it makes for freedom from excesses on the Way, so one attains profound realization of true eternity" (page 500) This is great stuff here folks. Master these four volumes and you will have an excellent foundation for all your future Taoist studies.

Understanding Reality, the Inner Teachings of Taoism is an interesting book. as with any other religious philosophy, it has some good things to say about inner development. i found some of the books in this compendium to contain remarkable insight. once again, the things discussed in this book are sometimes most helpful, sometimes not. but each person to his own understanding.i love the basic idea of alchemy that the human spiritual process is paralleled metaphorically by the refining of Gold. it requires mining, washing, firing, and collecting in a crucible. to me the whole thing has to be about the refining of character... thoughts and emotions and actions in order to become a spiritual immortal. there are close parallels with some schools of buddhism and hinduism. seeking of outer guides/spiritual masters both in this realm and in the celestial realms to teach and guide oneself, but ultimately its down to oneself.i have had some interesting encounters thanks to the pointers in this book. the most dangerous and informative in some ways was 'death' himself. he who brings relief. suffering... he who eats the truth and fear... he who opens doors. this experience though i must say nearly killed me, but what i learnt from it was great. talking to 'true life' brought me back from the edge and the experience has taught me about 'life'. it must be said here that Jesus is True Life.life (strength and freshness) can be know by his attributes (movement, attraction and function) . i had said that "true life is the true water of life", however though happy to agree with the term "living waters" i am happier to see life as more akin to flame, in that it needs to consume in order to spread and grow, and deprived of fuel/food etc it dies out. fire in the purest sense is love, from fire comes light and light is truth (purity), from truth comes colour and colour is being/life and beings, in all its multiversity. as well as being, life is also understood to be consciousness or mind, all of these things look back to truth (understanding) and truth looks back to love (kindness). And then finally love looks up to true love in order to sublimate the dualism... "loving kindness".fuel -> fire -> light -> colourgoodness -> love -> truth/life -> beingservice -> kindness -> understanding -> thistherefore the most important modifier of being is truth, which is directly linked to and generates being, but truth will not be possible without love. n.b. consciousness (being) should not be confused with perception (truth). nor should it be confused with self (I). it is possible to understand why pythagoras saw fire as the supreme element.above i look at the mechanics of fire/love as the ultimate first principle in all spiritual transformation. however believe as a christian mystic that it is of great value to love the love, to love the truth and to love being, not only as practical realities in daily life but also in the person of "the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, who is fire" (Blaise Pascal), in a personal way as a person. respect for the qualities representing God is of great value, but i believe of greater value to know 'him', in person.deaths functions are weariness (extreme exhaustion) and lack of energy. a shadowy heaviness of spirit. life attracts, whilst death repels, any object so long as it retains a function retains life to some degree. for example a knife gains life through sharpening, but as it becomes blunt it looses its function... but can be resharpened.true life, 'he who gives to those that come to him' can restore and preserve movement, function and attraction in our mortal bodies.the gold is ourselves, we are purified, by the the fire of love, within our hearts and the spirit of truth. the spiritual journey has not begun until the heart becomes activated and blessed. the purpose of the mind is to guide, guard and protect the heart into its growth toward perfection. the mind is the beginning of the firing process, it regulates the fire in the furnace. positive and wholesome thoughts and blessings upon oneself and others, encounters with God and spiritual guides, activating ones organs and nerves brain etc (the body mind continuum) through focused concentration on them. all these things originate in the mind... but it is the heart/furnace that is affected. when you begin to feel regular changes and blessing in your heart (the furnace) then you will know that you are on the right track. buds begin to appear.change, he who 'speaks fairly, without uttering a word', is the one who will bless you if your actions are pure, both of mind and heart. suffering is in what people do, suffering is in what you do. if you act fairly and loveingly, you will manage the change in your life for better and toward perfection. it must however be mentioned that "suffering is the ancient law of love" (Susa).the elexir of the taoists is the potential within oneself, or the image of god/buddha nature. apparently everyone has this potential. the spiritual embryos formed by uniting the opposites and qualities within oneself, coming to a form of oneness in every aspect, and yet a twoness. the will and desire along with a focused mind that knows its potential can do all this. watch out for white tigers... a white tiger, then your on track.notingness produces snow, as one immortal (yang po tuan) said, this comes about from exposure to nothingness, a seed is born. through vows one is able to annihilate ones self and attain emptiness. the emptiness becomes nothingness (this is a dangerous and uncomfortable state to be in) then a snow-flake is born, or i hope, many! patience.i can only speculate about ultimate potential, having not attained it myself... it may be that one is what one desires to be and yet not yet what one desires to be. but not in the final conclusion (i speculate) "i have not arrived and yet i have" may not be sufficient... there is still work for me to do.may whoever reads these words understand, and gain the inspiration to seek the ultimate potential hidden within themselves, having not realised it yet myself.i bow before God, the father, the son and the holy spirit.with lots and lots of love, from, snow-flake. xxx

I think it's easy to forget the toll that the AIDS epidemic took on our creative communities from 1980 til the mid-1990's when medical "cocktails" helped turn the fatal disease into a chronic one. Author Lance Richardson reminds us of that toll in his biography of Tommy Nutter, "The House of Nutter: The Rebel Tailor of Savile Row." The bio, which centers on Tommy, also features his older brother, David, who was a noted photographer and management aide to many prominent rock musicians. The Nutter brothers were born before and during WW2 of lower middle-class British parents. They came of age in the 1950's and 60's and both fastened on to the burgeoning style scene in London. Tommy went to work for a bespoke tailoring shop on Savile Row and soon shook things up with his - for the time - avant garde designs of how the new, the mod man, should look. He opened his own shop, selling his own designs, but Tommy Nutter was more a designer than a businessman. David, meanwhile. was finding his way as a photographer in London and New York. They were both in the mix at fashionable parties and the club scene. Both men were gay and dabbled in drugs. As the years went by, both men were successful - David as much as he wanted to be - and lived interesting lives. But when Tommy became HIV positive in the early 1990's, his life was cut short. He joined the thousands of creatives who lost their lives. Will we know what designs could have been designed, music been composed, books been written? Lance Richardson, in his book, takes a good look at the Nutter brothers - one dead, the other alive - and written an interesting book about two men who most of us were probably not acquainted with before reading the book.

Reading this bio felt like enjoying a perfectly well-composed and expertly paced meal -- with no flavor or texture overwhelming, but each element complementing and elevating all others. In general, even great biographies have a tendency to lean too hard into something: psychology, salacious gossip, name-dropping, trauma, overly academic historical reference, etc. But inevitably, something overwhelms. What I really appreciated, beyond the journey of a man, the shifting of an industry, the reinvention of a culture, and the frequent reminder of the rather unremarkable humanity of celebrities, was the variety of experiences the book contains. It's fun, educational, often in awe -- but even more often not...it's a story about artifice and honesty and their ability to coexist, authentically.also the photos alone are totally worth the price of admission.

Well written bio of a talented designer who blended Carnaby Street and Seville Row to create a fascinating style

Who knew?

Book arrived in pristine condition.

House of Nutter: The Rebel Tailor of Savile Row by Lance Richardson traces the history of Tommy Nutter along with his brother David. Nutter made his way from delivering cloth to tailors to being a key factor in the development of fashion in the rock and roll of the 1970s and 1980s. The book is told in an informal narrative style, punctuated frequently by photographs, many of them taken by David.Anyone who is a fan of the Beatles or of Elton John has seen Nutter's fashions, most likely without knowing it. On the cover photo for the Abbey Road album, three of four of the Beatles, all but George, are wearing Nutter suits.I found that the technical details of the operation of Seville Row fashion houses were fascinating. One interesting procedure followed was that the keeper of the templates of the individual clients would scan the obituaries each day to see which clients had died. In the case of a client's death, the patterns would be destroyed. It would be nice if the Internet companies of today were so dedicated to the preservation of privacy. This book may not be for everyone. However, it should be a good read for fashionistas and rock and roll fans.

Tommy Nutter was tailor to the stars in the 70s and the 80s before dying of AIDS in 1992. He even made the outfit the Joker wore in the first Batman film. Considering his talent, his personal turmoil, and the times in which he lived, this should have been a slam-dunk of a bio, but I found it boring, a chore to get through. One of the problems is it is not fully focused on Tommy, going on tangents about his brother, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger. The second is either Tommy's life is not that interesting or the author did not dig deep enough to find out what was interesting about it. I never felt like I got to know the person, just understood him on a superficial level, reading this. The book was well-researched though, and it was a nice chance to appreciate his talent, which was quite extraordinary. Ultimately, though, a disappointment. If you are obsessed with fashion, you might get more of a kick out of this than I did.

I found the writing style hard to take. I am struggling with how to put into words what my issue is and I don't intend or want to offend the author. I love reading biographies, autobiography and memoir of creatives and artists, I was looking forward to this. However the tone of the writer's voice was pretentious or grandiose. I could not connect to it and struggled to tolerate this style, I apologize, I just could not connect with the writer's voice and finally gave up. The tone perhaps is dramatic and sometimes reads as an embellished gossip story, kind of like if you are hearing a story told at a cocktail party by someone who loves to darw out a story about other people's lives. I apologize if I am not explaining this well. Perhaps you can read a few pages of this to see how you like the style and if it is tolerable and enjoyable reading for you. I prefer biography that is more direct and unpretentious and relatable. I am rating it 2 stars = Don't Like It.
