I wish I could give this book more stars but I truthfully do not see the usefulness in it. I understand that this is a Buttericks Dressmaking,Up To Date(1905) re-issue but the authors could have did a much better job in making it more useful to the modern reader. This book manages to hit my 2 pet peeves, huge amounts of written text for directions with scant photos, and little to no historical information given. Sewing is a hands on endeavor and requires illustrations for best knowledge retention.As well, a little more historical information on types of garments and uses would have been ideal. I was also disappointed that more info regarding fabric choices were not given, as well as best practice for using each technique. Crinolines,Corset,hoops nor bustles and all under structures were not reviewed in this book which was an even bigger disappointment because those were the reasons I purchased the book. I did give the book one star because I loved the beginning section stating that American women were not these advanced dressmakers that we like to believe they were. Other than that I would skip this book. There is pretty much nothing here that you cannot find in a sewing guide except the sewing guide will have better illustrations. This is definitely not a resource that will be open on your sewing table as you sew authentic garments. Its also not a rave historical guide for the clothing of the era.Is it worth it? No.

This is an incredible resource for anyone interested in learning how to completely hand sew and hand finish a garment. It has given me the ability to give that final authentic touch to my historical recreations. The size of the book is handy but the layout, like a lot of older instructional books, is poor. The images do not match with the paragraphs and that can be distracting to anyone who is a very visual learner. The images are in grayscale so it can be difficult to decipher exactly what is happening in the photos, especially if the text that accompanies it is vague.

This is a wonderful and useful book. But it is EDWARDIAN and not VICTORIAN. I love the instructions in this book. They are very clear, very detailed, and come with useful photographs. But the book is focused on Edwardian clothing and has nothing to do with Victorian fashion. The techniques do transfer--faggoting is faggoting and lace inset is lace inset. It doesn't matter the era in which you are working. The techniques for lace inset work as well on a modern baby's layette or a bridal veil as they do on a Gibson girl blouse. If you have any interest in fine sewing techniques, this is a great book. If you want explanations of how to make a bustle or how to adjust a skirt for a bustle, you will not find it in this book.

This book was written to teach home sewers how to make these clothes. It goes directly to specific information on how to sew seams, how to match plaids, how to make a dress form, and so on. Because most, if not all?, women would have been hand sewing at this time, the instructions are all about hand work. If you already have sewing instruction books but you would like to refine your skills in making highly fitted clothes and working delicate decorative techniques, this book is a gem. Not at all a fluff or talkative book, it is all good practical how-to info. Since I sew by hand, rather than machine, I especially loved this. The sort of info that could help make one a fine, highly skilled sewer.

I love this book, and have learned so much from it. I make authentic Victorian gowns for docents and reenacters an their standards are high. They like all of the extra features that I add to my gowns that I learned from this wonderful book. The pictures and dialog are very good and easy to copy in my sewing. I just got this book in yesterday. I have a degree in fashion design with wide knowledge of modern day professional clothing construction. However I am moving towards historic clothing construction. This book is great and shows how to construct authentic victorian clothing. However, it does not show bustles, or corsets. But great for outer wear

The pictures are of old garments and are a little difficult to see the detail.

Wonderful book! I haven't gotten deep into it, yet, but I can tell that there is a *lot* of information there. Considering that this is a reprint of a book intended for home seamstresses, it is incredible the level of skill that they expected to have. This is a book for people interested in fairly advanced sewing techniques.

It's such a helpful resource in letting us know what material will be covered on the test and how to better prepare for it. I think it's especially helpful for families on a tight budget (something I can attest to) who may not be able to afford costly private tutors or classes. I've also encountered many examples of things that my daughter hasn't encountered in the public school curriculum, which she must familiarize herself with for the Catholic school test. I also like that the answer guide has clear explanations. I'm really pleased with the value for my money on this purchase. I did a little comparing on the Amazon reviews for the various study guides before purchasing, and thought I was making the best choice. I can see that I was right. Very pleased with this guide!!

Purchased for my 12 year to prepare for the TACHS exam to give herself options for high school as this coming fall we begin the high school search for her. Good book for studying and keeping the brain fresh.

Laura van Dernoot Lipsky is the founding director of the Trauma Stewardship Institute and author of the best-selling book Trauma Stewardship. Widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of trauma exposure, she has worked with individuals, systems, and communities around the world for more than three decades.  Laura became one of the first to speak publicly on the connection between environmental science and trauma and the toll exacted on individuals and organizations as they witness mass extinction, irreversible ecological losses, or other forms of human encroachment. Simultaneously, she has long been an activist engaged in movements for social and environmental justice, and has taught on issues surrounding systematic oppression and liberation theory. Her TED Talk--distilling some of the themes she shares to help people who have experienced human and environmental trauma find their way through--was one of the first to be delivered inside a women's correctional facility.  Laura is an advisor for several nonprofit boards, an associate producer of the award-winning film A Lot Like You, and was given a Yo! I carry it with me everywhere, and ordered it for some loved ones, too. It's helped with my despair so much.The Age of Overwhelm is beautifully structured and paced to have a real rhythm of ideas, examples, personal experiences from heavy to mundane, caveats, humor, great illustrations. All kinds of readers can access it, too, from those able only to take quick hits riding the train to work (how I started reading it) to people who can settle into deep dives.And the writing seems really mindful of bringing you along as it explores how overwhelm shows up and ways to keep it from stopping us, especially in these times. Few nonfiction books show this much respect for readers. As an example: sometimes Laura cites a powerful quote I thought I knew or relates a widely-known event I thought I understood. But because she always, always brings examples to bear directly on the specific problem at hand, the effect is never ever cliché or retreading but the opposite: their original power is revealed and put to work *right now*.I know so very many people will find this helpful, and be as grateful as I am for the work she put in here.

This book was a massive disappointment. I love and frequently return to her previous (excellent) book, Trauma Stewardship, and had looked forward to this second book of hers. It reads more like expanded notes for a PPT presentation (complete with way too many and sometimes seemingly random cartoons and personal anecdotes). I wanted to be able to recommend this book to colleagues, but I cannot.

This is everything. Her first book, Trauma Stewardship, is equally incredible. Her books are truly life changing. She actually writes them in a way that doesn't make you overwhelmed to read them. She's so thoughtful about the user experience. Very grateful that this book exists :)

With The Age of Overwhelm, van Dernoot Lipsky provides a choose-your-own-adventure style guide to navigating what seem like ceaseless waves of difficult news. You can read it cover to cover or (as the author suggests) jump around to the parts that seem most helpful. Which feels like a gift at a time when it seems there aren't ever enough hours in the day. The sections on the challenges of media exposure and the benefits of time in nature or with animals or simply experience the awe of the world around us were especially helpful. The humor throughout adds much needed levity and is worth the read alone.

Being overwhelmed is so prevalent in our lives, it affects almost everyone I know, old or young. Laura's book not only tells why, but also offers many practical suggestions to pause, reflect, and reset. I enjoy the read, especially the chapter of When Less is More...

Once inside they are never seen again, and spend their lives satisfying men with warped minds of sexual pleasures.A thriving market is created by young under age girls becoming pregnant and eventually kept under supervision by foster parents, many of whom are pedophiles. The husband often raping ten year old girls. When the babies are born they are transferred to wealthy donors, with no questions asked. The mothers are pushed into prostitution.

A woman yells at a doctor at the local hospital trying to find her sick son, only tobe told he isn't there, he doesn't exist, and she is put in the nuthouse. Herdaughter Sasha is put into foster care and then her teacher Terri hunts downher sister India Kane, a policewoman, who she blames for taking Sasha. Indiathen starts an investigation into the matter and finds more questions than answers.Soon her boyfriend A.J. Colt's own investigation about a missing girl intertwines withhers as it becomes apparent that there are baby snatchers at work. Soon someonedies and can they prevent anymore deaths?? Must read. Adults 18+ only forsteamy scenes.

I reviewed Stealing Power which enticed me to buy this book immediately I finished reading it. This one is pretty horrific, I kept thinking that it was so believable it kind of made me feel sick with anxiety. The social and child services in any country have a pretty free hand to deal with cases involving children, and I could feel the tension rising in me with just how easy it would be to be exactly the opposite to what they should be. I know it was just a story but it was a good one. Again lots of research, the main characters good investigating police officers, a recommended read. I couldn't put it down. The two main characters love action still kind of annoys me but the story overwhelms that enough to make me continue my read. Recommended reading if you like crime thrillers.

This was my second book by this author. I was drawn in by the first book. Stealing Powers, I wanted more India Kane and AJ Colt. This book brings out the best and worst of them. The intense race of emotion they both put into solving horrific crimes. Imagine your baby disappeared and no one believed you even gave birth. Stepping into a corrupt government ruled baby snatching ring India stops at nothing to get it sorted out. All the while the race of love between her and her superior Colt is head spinning. India Kane tacles whatever evil there is once again. Looking forward to more of India and Colt.

This was a freebie and I thought I'd maybe get into a new series I could follow. I just couldn't get into this book. It seemed to jump around and go from a different person every couple of chapters. After a bit of this, I decided it sounded too dark for me with abduction of children and what they were used for. I also didn't like all the swearing in the book so gave up. Too many other good reads out there. I won't be following this series.

This book is one you need a strong constitution to face. It is well written, except the f bomb is used a lot. There's a lot of truths brought to light in regards to "baby snatching" and how it happens. I could not put the book down. As soon as I finished, I went looking for the next book written by No Brennan. Will recommend this book to all my reader friend and my family. I wonder if there will be a follow-up book?

What a great book. Kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next and who were involved. Loved the writing style and the characters were very in depth. I will be getting this others other books so I can find out more back ground on the characters as I found out after I started that this is part of a series and while this can be read fine as a stand alone I think by reading book 1 first I would have had a better understanding of the history of India and AJ.

India's pain from childhood abuse and Colt's insecurity about their relationship flows through their skills as detectives. The stories are complex and riveting and thoughtful. Well worth reading.

Ok, I just had to write this review to even out the other one. This literally a whole life's work on silica. It deserves 5 stars, if not more!!Like the Title says, It covers everything: true silica solutions (e.g. monosilicic acid); polymerisation of silica networks; colloidal aggregation (gel formation); surface chemistry (Si-OH bonding), etc. The most relevant section to me was the colloidal aggregation and silanol groups, since my PhD is on opal. But it definitely won't take the place of the appropriate scientific journal articles to your specific field of study. Consider it a damn good intro to silicate chemistry. The whole book is easily understood, because there aren't too many formulae (which tend to cause discontinuities in texts). Just the information that you need on silica.It has loads of figures (for example: effect of pH or temperature on gel formation), and you will often see them reprinted in various science papers - even today (they're that good). It isn't one of those symposium-type books; this is the only book of its kind.The only thing is the price. If you want your very own copy, you'll have to cough up [a lot of money]. Let's face it, if you're researching silica: you're going to need this book. Either you'll have to allocate some of your research fund, or you might consider borrowing it from your local library.

If you are working with aqueous silica, this is well worth a day's read. Seriously, you can hunt through Scifinder or the internet over the course of months, or you can spend a day with this book, and have much more focused searching on your specific area. But that aside, this book was written by someone that studied silica his whole life, and it shows in the elegance of presentation of the material. This makes it an enjoyable read, hard as that is to imagine for a book about silica.

352 pages. This is an incredible (somewhat odd-shaped) book that is absolutely loaded with Alice-related artwork, quotations, poems, factual information, letters, riddles and even more. It's divided into sections which include: Living Backwards, About Alice, Large as Life and Twice As Natural: Carroll Creatures, Royalty in Wonderland, Birthday Specials, How Long Ago Anything Happened, Imperial Fiddlesticks: Letters of Lewis Caroll, Poetry of Cabbages & Kings, Stories of Shoes, Ships and SealingWax; Curiouser and Curiouser Amusements; Recipes To Feed Your Head; As It Isn't, It't Ain't: Carroll Commentaries and Drawings of a Muchness Appendix.I was really amazed at the variety of things in this book and how interesting it was. I consider this one an absolute must for the Lewis Carroll/Alice in Wonderland collector.

The book and all is cute and is interesting. Lots of pictures. Here is the huge problem though- the size of the book is very awkward and small. In my bookshelf all my books are standard size of 8' by 11'. This book doesn't fit in well and is also awkward to hold. Plus some pages the print is too tiny to read. Also the book is really worth half the price rather than $21. Meh.

I love this book. I received it yesterday at my office and read what I could on my lunch hour. I couldn't wait to get home. I bought this because I wanted to eventually introduce my 1 year old granddaughter to "Alice In Wonderland." Imagine my surprise to find that I can start reading to her now. There are extended nursery rhymes, funny sayings and a fascinating dialogue through the whole book. The illustrations are superb! I can start my granddaughter on the "white rabbit, calico cat, the queen" as well as "Alice" just from these wonderful illustrations. I can highly recommend this book for children and also adults who enjoy Lewis Carroll's wit. I cannot write enough good things about it.

Bought this as a gift for an Alice lover and the book will not disappoint. Some many new facts and stroies they are sure to like it. The size of the book is great, small and square and just perfect. I feel this was a very good purchase, and will make any Alice fan very happy.
