D. T. Max was born and raised in New York City and graduated from Harvard in 1984. He has been an editor at Washington Square Press, Houghton Mifflin, and The New York Observer. For the past eight years, he has reported mostly for The New York Times Magazine. His work has also appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, and Chicago Tribune. I found this book to be incredibly interesting. I teach biology and anatomy to nurses, and I've known about prion diseases for a long time. I had read before about the disease kuru in New Guinea, and about the Mad Cow outbreak in Great Britain. But reading about a family that has an inherited disease that involves prions really changes things a bit in this field. In medical school, we heard of a case where surgeons opened the skull of a patient, thinking he had Alzheimer's Dementia...only to find out the person had Crutzfeld-Jakob disease. The proper protections were not in place and other people got infected with it.Prion diseases are different, in that they are not caused by bacteria or viruses, which we have known about for over 100 years. Prions are pure protein, and we have them in our brains normally. But when diseased prions touch normal proteins, they cause the unfolding of those proteins. And this causes the misfunction of normal proteins.I feel for this family in Italy. Their condition, that plagues their family, curbs their lives. But doctors will find out a lot more about prions by observing this family. Their misfortune will add to the current medical knowledge of the world about prions.

The Family That Couldn't Sleep is a chilling documentary about prion diseases and their terrifying effects on the human brain. It's well written and researched, and the accounts are intriguing, if not rather scary. I learned quite a bit from reading it. Ironically, it also made me sleepy, so I always read it before bed....At times it's a bit didactic, but honestly it's more interesting than dry. It certainly reads better than a textbook. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in epidemiology, biology, and medical microbiology.

Through an engaging, coherent history of prions and their diseases, "The Family That Couldn't Sleep" creates an amazing informative book. Very often, it is easy to dissociate laboratories and the molecular research that is actively moving to the lives of individuals human beings. Max creates an amazing weaved book in which the cutting-edge research of the time is connected to the individual family narratives. Beyond that, we are also able to get a glimpse into the lives of brilliant researchers who were spearheading an unknown field - prion research and exploration.Like a voyage of infectious disease, prions are connected across the world - from Italy, England, Papua New Guinea to the United States. "The Family That Couldn't Sleep" provides a great introduction into the interesting history of an infectious agent. With pockets of drama in the prion research field to the personal lives of afflicted individuals to the policy movements and action that move the storyline, Max's compelling book will pique anyone's interest in infectious prions and their role across the world.

I heard about this disorder (Fatale Familia Insomnia - FFI) and had to learn more about it. Maybe macabre and grisly for some but fascinating just the same. I'm still reading it but have learned so much about medical practices as far back as the 1600's and how medical research has evolved over the centuries. And even though FFI is now exceedingly rare, there are other related diseases (ALS is one, I believe) that are called Prion diseases that have to do with defective proteins and are still somewhat of a mystery for medical research. The author has managed to write about this so the average person can understand the body's physiology and disease and make it extremely interesting. Great book for people interested in medical mysteries.

3.5 stars, really. I learned so much about prion diseases and their discovery that I went back to reread it and take notes. However, switching back and forth among storylines and diseases ended up making me a little confused, which is why I'm going back to consolidate what I learned. The subject is fascinating and valuable, and I'm glad I read this book, although it could have gone smoother. I'm convinced we need to fund more prion research.

Mike Rose is a professor in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. He has taught in a wide range of educational settings, from elementary school to adult literacy and job training programs. He is a member of the National Academy of Education and the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Grawemeyer Award in Education, and awards from the Spencer Foundation, the National Council of Teachers of English, the Modern Language Association, and the American Educational Research Association. I read this book in a college class when I was studying to become a teacher. I made it a habit to read it every year before school begins to remind me to really see my students and reach out to them so that they don't slip between the cracks. This is an inspirational and instructional text, and I recommend it to every teacher.

I bought this book for a college class on literacy studies. Mike Rose documents his literacy journey in the US, being an immigrant and all. It tells a powerful story of the educational challenges of students of colors, immigrant students, and students from all sorts of backgrounds.

This was the assigned text for English 300. It's a good book where Mike Rose chronicles his own educational experiences inside and outside academia. He has some great insights about the human experience and reveals some embarrassing anecdotes about himself along the way. It is hard to sum up this book concisely, but I would recommend this book for anyone in and around education. However, in my opinion the last sections of the book were not as enjoyable. What I found especially repetitive in the last sections were his thoughts on, and experiences with pedagogy, perhaps it is because I cannot relate to that aspect at least not yet (hopefully) but likely Rose wanted to make sure his readers did not miss his thoughts on it. This book revealed to me many small insights, the best section is found on page 95.

Mike Rose grew up under-educated and placed in a tracking system in his school that almost doomed him to a live of unfulfillment. Only because he was able to be de-tracked and helped by a caring teacher, did he escape the vocational dead-end he was headed for. This is a powerful book about moving beyond what educational bureaucracy has in store for many of our poor children, who, because of their poverty or life circumstances are pre-judged not to be worth educating. I suggest the reader also read Frank McCourt's biography of his life as a teacher, "Teacher man." McCourt taught in NYC vocational schools for 30 years and the two books compliment each other in perspective.

An Excellent autobiographical book that emphasizes the importance of teaching and mentoring disadvantaged students

I read this book because I was interested in literacy education. This is hands down, one of the best and most interesting books I have ever read on education in general. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in teaching literacy or remedial education or will be working with such students. Rose's achievements with students was acceptional and successful. Rose debunks a lot of stereotypes and educational fallacies on literacy and remedial students, as he was placed in such courses himself. This is truly an amazing book of one man's journey to become an educator as well as challenging and redefining educational problems. I will be reading this book again and more of Rose's work to learn more to be an outstanding teacher.

Great book ar great price

Read this for a college class and was pleasantly surprised at how I actually liked the book. It really walked you through the life of an inner city teacher and the struggles they face. Highly recommend for anyone going in to teaching.

Didn't realize this was written in a play form when I ordered it. I absolutely loved this story though! One of my favorites. I hope that a school or somewhere local to me decides to perform this play. I would definitely go see it.

Jodi Piccoult has presented her book in an unusual way. It is clever and visual, but not one of my favorite books by her.I can visualize my grand-daughters participating in a "play" and really having fun doing so.I'm not sure whether I will stay with it to the end, or not.

I was disappointed - the description for this Jodi Picoult "book" was deceptive. Even if it is a good story - it should have been CLEARLY indicated that it is a musical - ie in PLAY format not a book. NOT really worth the cost - as I can get a full fledged novel of hers for the same price. BTW - I have every other novel she has written. Will not pre-order again unless descriptions are extremely clear as to what I will be receiving.

I have read everyone of Jodi picoults books and this is the worst, I regret ordering it. Sample was very deceiving.

I absolutely love everything else that Jodi Picoult has written, so I automatically preordered this for my Kindle. Nowhere was it written that this is a play not a novel. I didn't get past page 2 before I stopped reading in digust. Wish that I could get my money back for this very misleading "book"

I could just imagine how much fun this musical would be to see preformed by the local school. It hits fairy tales with female empowerment through an athletic princess who is trying to follow "The Rules" to catch her prince and guest appearances from all of your favorite Mother Goose characters. There are some great double entredres that might fly over the heads of younger kids, but will keep the adults in their seats.The commentary on the current social situation and pointed jabs at politics will keep everyone on their toes waiting to hear the next almost groan worthy joke, well, the adults might groan, but the kids will be rolling in the aisles.

Over The Moon: A Musical Play.Please note the "Musical Play." It's a hilarious play/musical, especially when put on by high schoolers. For those that purchased this thinking it was a book, and are giving it bad reviews,good job reading the title. But if you're looking for something fun for a thesbian troupe, or high school play, this is it!!!!

I found this book only moderately helpful for the Lauterbrunnen-Grindelwald area, partly because there is so much online content for these areas. I can see where it might be more helpful for less traveled areas.The hike descriptions are very detailed, and the color pictures are pretty. The distance, gain/loss, and difficulty ratings seem mostly accurate. One problem: the popular hike that everyone refers to as "Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg" is referred to in this book as "Grindelwald (Berghaus Mannlichen) to Kleine Scheidegg". This is misleading, because the hike does not go through Grindelwald.The major problem with this book is that it is mostly text, with only a couple of minimal area maps. They show how far apart the hikes are and roughly their position, but don't allow the reader to see where they intersect, where there are alternative routes, or where you can take public transport. (The last is described in the text, but is difficult to visualize without a map.) There are also no schematics showing the shape of each hike.More helpful resources on the topic can be found by Googling "Jungfrau Wanderkarte PDF" and "Schilthorn Wanderkarte PDF". The free Wanderkartes are panoramic maps showing popular hikes, their altitude and distance, and how they intersect. There are also short text descriptions. You can pick up hard copies of these at the train stations in Switzerland. Just by glancing at these maps, I got a better understanding of hiking options than I did from reading hundreds of pages in the Reynolds book. Sadly, the book didn't even get to go to Switzerland with us.

These Cicerone Walking books are compact and informative. This edition covers Switzerland's Bernese Oberland and includes over 100 walking routes. The book offers an introduction to the area, safety and weather concerns, and tips about the use of buses, trains, and cable cars to access some of the walks. The color photography gives a delicious sense of the scenery.Each route gets a verbal description, and there are generalized schematics of the routes in a given area. These schematics are not adequate for navigation, and the book strongly recommends getting a local map product prior to undertaking most of these walks, even if you intend to use GPS. Well recommended as a planning guide to some fabulous mountain walking in the Swiss Alps.

Initially this book looked unpromising, but after your first walk you will realize that this book is actually very helpful.Great location, and great book !!

Plenty of hikes with detail....some easy and some all day hikes. Pictures added value to set the stage for a week's worth of excellent hikes.

The book offers a wonderful concept on creating a "Big Idea" that envelops your entire worship experience. Book does need some editing, but an excellent read . I highly recommend the book for churches wishing to impact their congregation.

The thought of have having every one on the "same page" has been a value in church for years. But not until I read this book have I seen a church actually get everyone and everything on the same page.... literally. Every service, small group, satellite location, office cubicle, and purpose for the church comes from the BIG idea. This process is freeing and invigorating! Why hasn't this been done before! Instead of various areas of the church competing for resources and splitting the congregations attention is so many directions and thoughts (with limited lasting effect I might add), this church works in step with God and each other to make maximum impact and ultimate "stickiness". I love it!Regardless of how it may look in your setting, I highly recommend this book to get your creative juices flowing!

This highly practical book on not just preaching, but church-wide discipleship, is written by one of the leading, Biblically conservative churches today in the areas of creative communication, team-based ministry, evangelism and leadership development. Community Christian Church in Chicago is also recognized as one of the top five leading multi-site churches.The authors make a clear case that most of our churches send anywhere from 30 to 100 messages a week as to what we want our people to respond to in their growth. Our Sunday services, alone, often send 20-50 messages. In The Big Idea, the authors make a case for focusing the message to one Big Idea throughout the entire worship experience for the week and asking for clear response to that one idea in all areas of our church. They convincingly make the case that, in the long term, better discipleship occurs if we can yield a greater application response to the messages being sent--so people are living what they know rather than knowing far more than they live.Don't be intimidated by the author's success and size of church--they communicate very simply. Along the way they give suggestions for how smaller churches can begin to use some or all of what they share. This is not a book about a program, rather it is a book with lots of practical leadership process steps that can be gleaned from and subsequently contextualize to your own style, leadership and setting. You will quickly note this approach to communicating for discipleship is used by their multi-site mega church as well as church plants.After reading the first two chapters, I thought this book would make it on my top 10 list of must read leadership skills books for pastors. By the end of the book it was still in my top 25 and probably top 20. While the book is well illustrated throughout, I was left longing for just a few more varied examples. I especially was hoping that the authors would deal more with expositional preaching from the perspective of using that style of preaching to demonstrate good personal spiritual disciplines as a way of modeling. They did a very short, excellent bullet point treatment of ways to approach topical preaching--though this was the primary area I wished for more detailed illustrations of each approach (even if the examples were simply web links to sermons that could be listened to so as to learn more about how to effectively construct each kind of approach). If the authors had more extensively illustrated some of these ideas I would be telling you this is the best book on discipleship and preaching I have ever read. As it stands, it is still a great book that is sure to provide you with helpful ideas you can begin to implement quickly.

I enjoyed the reading, but I do not agree with Dave on many issues. I liked the "Big Idea" concept for a church, it would help to keep focus. But one problem I had with him saying that I should stop calling myself a Christian and instead call myself a follower of Jesus. I am both, but saying that I am a Christian says who I am, not what I am. I agree that over the last 50 years the name "Christian" has become to mean a self-righteous, bigot, intolerant, and loud person. But so are some Americans, but that doesn't mean they are less an American. It's who they are.

For some reason, my cookbook didn’t show up on Oct 9th so I was reading reviews in the meantime.I don’t understand the negative reviews. One in particular castigating the author for high calorie submissions when I only saw one matching that description in the Slow-Cooker section (Loaded Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Sweet Potatoes 806 calories for one loaded boat). The rest of the recipes are below 500 calories.I enjoy the organizational format and the abundance of professional photos of most of the meals. You can get a good idea if the recipe is for you by photos alone and this has been well done just like her previous two cookbooks.She also has a “Skinny Scoop” commentary on the bottom of the page that offers information you may not have known related to the recipe or references how to use the recipe in tandem with another one of the recipes in the book.As always I appreciated the time taken to list a recipes nutritional information since I calorie count making it much easier for me in that effort.I’ve included photos of what I have made so far having only had this book for a few days and a photo of the so-called calorie offending one so many reviewers are criticizing as a departure from her previous publications. Some of the criticism of this publication is grossly exaggerated and for what reason I can only speculate.

1. STOP COMPLAINING THAT SHE IS NOT INCLUDING THE WEIGHT WATCHERS POINTS! Weight Watchers OWNS the point system and Gina will NEVER publish the WW points for her recipes, nor will any other author be able to. EVER. She states this very clearly on her blog and in the cookbooks, but apparently people would rather complain than read & comprehend.2. She gives complete nutritional information for every single recipe and she has made the recipes far healthier than they normally are! Stop complaining!3. Her recipes are not specifically made for diabetics or those with sodium restrictions. I have no clue why people expect a cookbook to meet their exact dietary restrictions and then complain when it does not - this book is not stated to fulfill either restriction.I was VERY impressed with this book, especially in comparison to the 2nd, which I did NOT care for at all (most recipes were from her blog, with little or no changes. 4-5 pages were dedicated to toast and taco toppings each. Waste of time & space.) The food photography is well done and therefore makes the book a pleasure to look through. I think it is far better organized than her 1st two books were and the index is MUCH easier to navigate this time! The variety of recipes is much larger than in the 1st two books and while there are some blog favorites included, most are new recipes. I can honestly say there are a lot of recipes in this book that I plan on cooking that I would never have tried normally, as I consider myself a poor cook! She makes them look that good and the recipes that easy to prepare!For those without an IP or airfryer,yes she provides alternate stovetop/oven cooking methods.I personally think this is the best of the 3 books, in terms of organization, appeal & variety. Far superior to the 2nd cookbook for sure!

I made the quickest Gnocchi Bolognese from page 147 and as always it was so delicious, even though I used almond milk, skipped the ricotta and used trader joe's cauliflower gnocchi! ( I am Lactose intolerant ) I can already see this gorgeous cookbook being my most used book this winter season. I live in NYC and busy, these one-pot meals will be such a time saver for me. I was actually peeved that her last book did not contain many one-pot mealsNext up on my list is the Shrimp tempura bowl, Arroz con pollo, chickpea mofongo, turkey and sweet potatoes dinner, chicken souvlaki dinner ... :)I notice some unfair reviews left for this book, Gina is not affiliated with weight watchers and this is not a weight watchers book! Thank god for the rest of us who are not fans of the program and just want to eat healthy balanced meals. Also, these are one pot meals! logically the calories are going to be higher than are other books which focused on just sides or entrees etc. !I am lactose intolerant and yes there are many cheese recipes, Skinny taste recipes often contain milk products so no surprise there but you can easily find substitutes and aged hard cheeses are safe for us who are just moderately intolerant from what I read.So if you are Paleo, low carb, Keto or whatever the latest fad is these days, this book is not for youIf you love cooking using your instant pot, air fryer, sheet pans or grills to churn out quick, delicious, healthy family-friendly meals then this should be your go-to book this winter season

I received my Kindle version overnight and have been looking at the recipes all morning, trying to decide what to try first. Every recipe looks delicious, and uses easy to find ingredients, and none look bad to to me. The illustrations are beautiful. I own all 3 Skinnytaste cookbooks and this one is already my favorite.
