This book has been beautifully written with rich historical detail and lush scenery but the story-line isn’t particularly engaging. I am so disappointed that I think I am going to rant for a little bit in my review for which I apologise. There is so much potential in this book, so much more it could have been and it just never even got close. The best way I can sum it up: It’s all a bit meh.The main heroine, Ismae, is 17 years-old and after escaping a forced marriage at 14 has been living in the convent of St Mortain where she has been trained to be an assassin. Exciting premise right! Assassin! Love it! But no, I found the character and plot to be such a letdown. She is very two-dimensional with little substance to drive the plot.The romance was almost non-existent, can you say insta-love! There was a moment when Ismae realises she had fallen in love with the male hero and I had to re-read the paragraph to make sure I had understood it. There is a little banter between the two, but not much else that had me thinking they were in love with each other. It’s like Ms LaFevers suddenly realised the two hadn’t gotten together yet and so she declared them in love without worrying about any build up.In terms of the story-line, when I had finished the novel, I realised that at no time did I feel like any of the characters were in any real danger. There was no real action, just a lot of skulking about and talking about politics. At no time was I madly reading to make sure everyone would be ok, there just wasn’t any real suspense or drama.I would say that ‘Grave Mercy’ is more a historical novel with a smattering of fantasy elements and a dash of romance.3/5 Stars! Ok read but doesn’t live up to its potential.

This book was over 500 pages and yet after finishing it, I felt like not much happened. I've seen some great reviews on Amazon, Goodreads and also on Booktube and I guess I might be the outlier here, but I just didn't connect with the book. It's hard to really pinpoint why so I'll try my best to do so here.Writing style - I think the writing style really got to me. The book opened up with a really exciting scene but it slowed soon after that and it never really picked up again. I think what really got to me was the first person present tense narrative as well as the linear writing style. Linear writing meaning, "I woke up and had breakfast. After breakfast we needed to leave. We were on the road for two days only to rest our horses...etc." I'm not really sure how to explain this further, but I like the books I read to have more inner dialogue and immersive detail. I want to understand the world, the characters, and why they do what they do...especially in a book categorized as fantasy.Characters - No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't connect to Ismae. Again, this might go back to my complaints about the writing style, but I felt like her character was set up so well, but was executed poorly. She had a really interesting and harsh past. I mean her parents didn't want her! Although she mentions this in the book, but there's not enough inner dialogue for me to understand how she's feeling because of her past or how her past might have molded her into the person she is at present time. She has this weird connection and attraction to Gavriel but then we're not given enough reasons why that is. Gavriel also wasn't developed enough and we as readers don't understand him at all because we're seeing him through Ismae's eyes. So by the time the "love" happened, I didn't buy it. It's really sad because I felt like these characters had such great potential.Plot - I understand where Robin Lafevers was going with the plot. And I saw the potential political intrigue but it didn't do it for me. Maybe this was an epic fantasy written for the YA genre, but I've read other fantasy novels written for teens, and I know teens are not dumb. However, this plot felt like it was dumbed down. I felt like the whole novel, I was reading about who the Duchess should marry. And the political reasons for why she should or should not marry someone was not well explained. If it was explained, it was at surface level, making it unbelievable.I really wanted to like this book because it was intriguing just reading the cover flap. And I heard that the sequel is better, but because of the writing style, I sadly will not be continuing with this series.

Grave Mercy is a story about a convent of female assassins, but it is not nearly as dark and gruesome as Nevernight (which I also loved but for entirely different reasons). Grave Mercy follows the story of Ismae, who is a daughter of the God of Death. Her mother tries to kill Ismae while she is still in the womb but she somehow survives. Years later her father tries to marry her off to an abusive man but she manages to escape to the convent of St. Mortain where she trains to become an assassin in service to Death himself.Even though this is a book about a convent of assassins it is not particularly religious. Yes, there is some talk about the Old Saints vs the New God, but its in passing, and used more for explanations and intrigue than anything religious. Also, for a book about assassins, there isn’t a ton of death. Yes there are killings, but they aren’t explained in gruesome detail. Furthermore, Grave Mercy doesn’t really going into the training of the assassins either.You are probably wondering “How is this book about a convent of assassins if it doesn’t focus on Religion, Killing, or Training?” Great question! I’m glad you asked! Its about Ismae and her first real assignment – protecting the Duchess of Brittany from the French crown and her own nefarious council. There is a lot of political intrigue, which I found super interesting, but it didn’t lack for action either. In the world of the high court of Brittany you never know who to trust and trusting the wrong people can cost you dearly.Grave Mercy isn’t only about betrayal and intrigue and plotting. There is also a good amount of love – both romantic and platonic. You see examples of strong families and loving brothers that are juxtaposed against toxic family relationships and misplaced family ties. The duchess tries to find even a hint of romance in her arranged marriage and Ismae fights against her heart. There is a little bit of everything and I love it!I would totally recommend this book to anyone who loves assassins and romance and political intrigue!!

A crime thriller with a twist. The main characters, Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Sheriff David Kane, have similar mysterious backstories, which the reader gets a bare-bones introduction to. These two sheriffs are overqualified for their jobs, and both basically hiding from their pasts! But, thank God they are, because Black Rock Falls County, Montana, has evil rarely seen, and both Jenna and Kane are challenged to the max. Jenna has been in town a couple years longer than Kane, and we see the emotional effects of living in fear with only herself to depend on. She is sometimes forgetful, not focused, and stressed. Kane provides some much needed support when she learns to trust him.People disappearing, torture and murder, and someone wants Jenna out of the way; the action and the stress climb! There are lots of suspects and few clues for the reader. A complex who-done-it that will grab you from the beginning!

And at that point, I really didn't care who the culprit was - although I think I figured it out at bout 30%.I cannot understand the higher ratings this book has receiver unless they were posted by YAs or incredibly naïve readers. There are so many inconsistencies and wrong terminology here, not to mention the shallowness and lack of believability of the characters.No one in Montana ever, ever refers to a pickup or SUV as a "car". Most vehicles are always referred to as "rigs" no matter what they are.Jenna goes from having "manicured nails", but three pages later "chews what is left of her nails". 5 pages later, she's "manicured" again. Really?The sun is out with green patches showing along the road - and when they arrive at the landfill a few minutes later, there was a blizzard and everything is iced and snow covered. Make up your mind!I got really tired of his "big", "thick", "muscled" arms and her "small" hands.If he's 6'5" and if she's so "small", how does he feel "her hot breath on his cheeks"??I think Ms. Hood writes this drivel to hear herself talk. Too much inconsistent, unnecessary, annoying detail, too little research, and too many non-American phrases and words for anyone to believe this was really set in Montana. (See the 1-star review by Deesy . Right on!)I could go on, but I'm too ready to move on and leave this annoying book behind.

Cou!dn't stop reading this book. Needed to know the who, how and when. With all the different characters i truly couldn't guess who the killers were. Going to recommend this book to friends and family alike. Keep up the great writing, because you have a fan in me, and as long as you write, I'll read!!!!!

I appreciated the struggle of the main female character to assert her role as sheriff in a tiny town, earning and commanding the respect of the town. I also liked the fact that she has a secret past that this book only vaguely touches upon.I also liked the main male character. He, too, has a secret past that remains largely unexplained - presumably to maintain a bit of suspense for the subsequent books. As the deputy sheriff, he has some difficulty deferring to the sheriff's command. Not because she's a woman, rather, because he's accustomed to being in command.I enjoyed the story itself - the sexual tension between the two main characters was compelling. The mystery of the story was enjoyable, even if it wasn't very in-depth as far as police procedure goes. Some books go into intense detail about police procedures and cop lingo, perhaps to the point of being mired down to a degree - this book is not one of those books.Overall, it was a good book and I may read it again one day. However, I didn't purchase the second book in the series because this one dragged a bit for me in several parts. I found myself flipping through some of the parts that were somewhat repetitive.Small side-note: the book was set in Montana but written by someone who isn't American. As an American reader, I found the British (Irish? Scottish?) colloquialisms to be distracting and out of place. Ex.- referring to a windshield as a windscreen. Characters using the word, "Brilliant!" etc.Perhaps this isn't something that would bother anyone else, but when I read a book, I have an idea in my head of what their voices might sound like based on the setting of the story. When the text in this book has Americans saying things that are clearly British references, I have a difficult time reconciling that with the very American accents I've assigned them. Had the book been set in Europe, I wouldn't have thought twice about it.

Bought this for my child as he sees Michael Phelps (and Tim Howard) as role models for those with similar challenges in their life. He too realizes many things are easier to appreciate after hard work and it’s often a delayed gratification is the toughest to understand. Definite great reading or motivator for pre-teens.

My 13 year old swimmer son loves this book, hasn’t put it down yet!

Much to my surprise, this was quite the good read. I'm not into sports but when this came across my radar screen, I thought I'd check it out. Really really enjoyed it!

This is a great book for swimmers who are actively swimming toward their goals. Good for teen and advanced preteen readers.

The book is really good because you get to know a lot about MP. I'm disappointed about this edition, because it says it includes London 2012 but that's not true. The books finishes before Beijing. It only includes a list of all the medals won by MP including London 2012.

This book definitely exceeded my expectations, especially one centered around a sports figure. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

Enjoyed this book very much. Michael tells an inspiring account of his journey to the gold medals and his relationship with his Mother. Highly recommend it!

Interesting to know more background on Michael Phelps and his work to make the olympics. I hope he writes more and brings us up to date with this year's competition at Rio.

I really like this book and while it may have been written in 2005 it will give you a crash course in the field of FPGA's, I used this as a stop on my way to actually programming and understanding FPGA's.Follow this book up with actually purchasing a FPGA and a book (such as Verilog by example) to move forward.I knocked one star off because while I felt the book was extremely informative there were some seriously glaring edit issues with the book.One other problem I found was that the author, being so entrenched in the field tends to mention something a while prior to describing it. If you're confused on a topic while reading, continue along, he'll eventually explain.

Another Excellent book by Mr. Maxfield. I had received a copy of his book "The Design Warrior's Guide to FPGAs" at a design seminar, and enjoyed it so much I purchased this one from Amazon.com. This book was a joy to read, as Mr. Maxfield has a very clear, conversational writing style that makes his work very readable.I highly recommend this book for anyone starting out in FPGA design, and wish I had read it before going through the pain of having to select an FPGA for use in our hardware. A long, tedious task, which would have been much simpler with access to Mr. Maxfield's insights on the various vendors and their product offerings.After reading the book, I realize that my FPGA vendor selection could have been better. We use PowerPC micro-controllers from AMCC in our products, and should we ever move to an FPGA with an embedded PowerPC core, we'll likely have to shift from our current FPGA vendor to Xilinx, in order to meet our FPGA needs.Since I didn't select Xilinx initially, this will entail tooling up on a different family of FPGA devices and development tools. Not a trivial task. Had I read "FPGAs: Instant Access" before making my selection, it would have allowed me to make a more informed vendor selection for our long term applications.

If you are a long time designer of FPGAs and are intimately familiar with them then you already know the contents of this book but it can still be of value to you. Keep it on your shelf and when someone comes to ask you what you would rate as a basic question from one clearly ignorant of the subject matter give them this book. Tell them to read it and if they still have a question when they are done, only then you will impart your wisdom upon them.FPGAs Instant Access covers all aspects of FPGAs, their history, use and design flow but not in sufficient deal to help a designer. It is intended for those outside of our comfortable little world, to get them to understand what we do, our trials and tribulations, the things we need to think about and the tools we use. I would even dare say it's appropriate for an analog engineer that wants to know what those FPGA designers are talking about. As an introduction to FPGAs for those in college it would also be a nice quick read that will expose you to more facets than colleges concern themselves with.In summary, this book is a great overall introduction to all elements of FPGA design for a reader to come up to speed in the subject matter quickly while not boring them with the finer details of a design methodology book.

Clive Maxfield (Max) has created a book that is quite full of information about FPGA technology and development.For an engineer, this is a condensed guide of what the boss needs to know about what you are doing. You may be hard pressed to find what you need in this condensed version of what is likely to be found in two or three books and in manufacturers data sheets, application notes, and by experience doing FPGA design. There is no chapter on FPGA language tutorials, so if you are looking for VHDL, Verilog, or other language tutorials, they are not here. You must get the full size tomes on the languages, and muddle through.Managers, on the other hand, will gain an understanding very rapidly of what their engineering charges are up to. They also will be up to an understanding of why they are approving the multi 10's of thousands of dollars for FPGA development tools."Dear old dad" would be proud to have this volume, especially if he were a manager.
