Great book!

I received this as a gift for my nearly 3-yr-old. The pictures are very cute and engaging, and I love the idea, but the text is strange.Phrases like “Little Harriet [Tubman] didn’t like to be told what to do...” come off weird, as though it’s getting toddlers to identify with enslaved people because they also didn’t want to take a nap.There were also a lot of dates. Why? I’m more interested in my kiddo learning concepts and how to think creatively and critically than memorize the year William Wilberforce did something. As a result I found myself making up my own words as I was reading this book, to convey the importance of the people in kid-friendly terms (e.g., So-and-so saw people were treated really badly and needed help, so they worked really hard to make things better....).I really like that books about activists like this are being made, but this one is written like the author hasn’t talked with kids lately, isn’t a parent, and isn’t an educator.

My sister-in-law asked that I review her book. This is a wonderfully simple introduction to some of history's most influential people and the powerful lessons we can learn from them. The bitesized info on each individual is perfect for keeping little ones interested, and the bright, simple illustrations keep even my 3 year old tuned in. If you're looking for a way to introduce important lessons from amazing people of the past to your child, this is it.

The artwork on each page is so cute and well-done, helping you see what the setting would have been like for each little hero, as well as what they looked and dressed like. Well done to Kyle Kershner for his careful creativity!Each little hero in the book was a real person in history or modern day who has made a significant difference in the world by fighting for peace, prosperity, and equality.I read the book to my boys, ages 4, 7 and 12. This is what they thought about the book:The 4-year-old: He liked the pictures. His favorite was the one about Rosa Parks.The 7-year-old: He thought the book was interesting because it showed life from back then with people trying to change bad things. This son recognized Abe Lincoln and Malala from the cover of the book. He loves history and he loves learning about people who make a difference, so he is thrilled to have this book in our home.The 12-year-old: He thought it was great to have a children’s book that taught about each of these people. He feels that this book will inspire children to solve wrongs they see in our world.Each little hero in this book is one to admire and aspire to be like. They came from all time periods, races, and backgrounds, but they all stood for goodness and fairness in this world where we all deserve to be happy.For some reason, this book brings me to tears as I think about it. I am so glad, like my oldest son observed, that Poelman realized how no child is ever too young to be inspired by those who have changed the world so that they too can change the world someday.

3.5 This is a nice, good quality children's book. I really like the focus on influential people in history and I enjoyed the artwork. It didn't really have any life to the description, nothing that made it really fun or inviting.

I read Mr Conaway's first Napa book years ago, and in general I found it to be a fairly interesting read. When I saw that a third volume in the series was available I eagerly downloaded the Kindle version. A lot of things have changed in Napa since volume 2 in the series was published in 2003, and most of those changes have not really been for the better.What I was hoping for was a book that would talk about the rampant silliness and runaway corporate takeover of Napa. I really don't need a Persian temple, an Italian castle reconstruction, or a ski lift ride to enjoy a good glass of wine. Everyone in Napa now wants to make it all an 'experience' and charge you $100 for the privilege. Enough already. Other than a discussion of how the vintners have manipulated the process to change the definition of a 'winery', Mr Conaway does not really go into much detail on what this all really means from the perspective of someone like me, the average wine consumer (unless I want to read about traffic and parking lots).There were a few interesting parts of the book, such as the parts that mention Jean-Charles Boisset and his wife, Gina Gallo, as Mr Conaway puts it, a member of 'wine royalty'. The fact we have 'wine royalty' in California goes to the heart of what's wrong with places like Napa. Napa has become a playpen and a vanity project for the wealthy. A Disneyland for drunkards.A lot of this book goes on at length about politicians, boards, meetings, lobbyists, vintners, and their opponents. To my eye a lot of it reads as one set of millionaires battling another set of millionaires. If you own land in Napa, much less a winery, by definition you have money. How dare you build your vineyard next to my hunt club where I ride my horses! After a while the battles of the wealthy versus the uber-wealthy versus the activists just gets boring. It's all about status and ego, not really about the wine, much less saving the environment.At this point I view Napa as a lost cause. I started going to Napa decades ago (when it still was special) and have been there quite a few times, but it's been a few years. Napa has lost something, and to me it's just an overpriced corporate troll farm. My real concern, and in a way why I read the book, is learn something to hopefully avoid the Napa-ization of other wine regions. I don' t want the same greed and stupidity to spread. That is probably a lost cause, but I can hope for better.Mr Conaway could have written this book in two sentences. Why is Napa becoming a mess? Look in the mirror.

It's an excellent book - it's a dark tale of the realities of development and profiteering in the Napa Valley. The insights the author provides are unique, in depth and based on a handful of truly great sources. If you're a fan of Napa Valley, this book provides a different look into the harsh realities of development as it relates to wine making.

James Conaway has taken on the giants - the corporate and big money interests who have swallowed up this Valley of Wine. He is the only voice who is championing the causes of the locals and the environmentalists who have watched their community being devoured by high rollers without a conscience. The idea of cutting down 17,000 oak trees to grow vineyards is not compatible with being green or even human.No one has raised the voices of the community of the ordinary people in Napa better than Conaway, a superb writer whose novelistic style brings readability and pleasure to every paragraph. My only sorrow is that there are only three books in his incredible trilogy, which is a monumental achievement.You don't have to know anything about wine or even be interested in the environment to enjoy this fast paced, ripping good, true to life yarn. It's nonfiction at its finest.

The book seems to be carefully researched and is packed with interesting tidbits about the valley, it’s people and the wine Industry. After reading this (and the prior 2), one is left with the impression that we are loving this place to death. (I live in Napa).

I purchased this book for my boyfriend who works in Napa Valley in the wine industry. He has not read it yet but was very excited to get this book. He has read the others books by James Conaway. He said he recommends it.

Conway has really given us a winner this time. His previous books on The Napa Valley were well done yet this one has done him, and Napa, proud.

The re-orientation of Napa Valley from agriculture to high-end tourist mecca is a well-known secret. I've lived in the valley for 44 years and know many of the people in this book. Conaway gets it: the public obsession with wine is transforming arcadia into disneyland. Few observers outside Napa see beyond the glitzy tourist brochures or wine-industry promotions. Conaway however dives deep. He's not seduced by the glamorous life-style or chic-rustic tasting rooms. He doesn't rely on wine or hospitality industry brochures. So instead, in this book we get to know the people whose names may not be seen on wine labels. He describes the populist groundswell among residents exasperated with traffic; alarmed by cancer rates among the highest in California; and worried about water consumption in an arid region. In this book, Conaway describes how a decade ago agriculture in Napa was redefined to mean not only growing food but also marketing (food-and-wine pairings, etc.). Then the door was opened to the aggressive tourism that now (1) enrichens the industry and (2) pleases governments; and which also crowds the valley, consumes the water, and drives the housing costs beyond the reach of the very workers who labor to sustain the glamour. The public has deplored these changes, but neither letters to editors, nor public comments at government meetings, nor sign-holding demonstrations have impressed local law-makers. It takes a keen outsider like James Conoway to document the arc in the valley from superb ag to self-congratulatory "world-class" tourism. Unlike most outside observers of Napa, Conaway writes from the community's perspective instead of from the wine industry's. The industry---which is now as much tourism as viticulture--- may not much like the harsh glare of truth, but readers who prefer to know the reality of the county, rather than its image, will appreciate Conaway's research and reporting.

No matter what discrimination or difficulty on their road, the book tells us the story of how they turned difficulties on their road into challenges, how they didn't give up and reached their dream. Some of the men and women are known, from many I hadn't heard before.It is so important to have role models in life. L. A. Amber offers possible examples to fill in those role models. These 50 people showing 50 awesome examples of the power everyone has in him or herself. Beside that, the author ended every story with a personal note to the reader. "Did you know that...? Have you ever felt rejected? Keep dreaming big dreams. Are you patient with others? Do you ever feel like giving up? Do you learn from your mistakes? What do you dream of doing to change the world? Each of us has a special mission or purpose, you matter, you are important, don't ever forget that..."The combination of the stories together with those personal questions to the readers (it is a children's book, but it speaks to adults as well) make this book extra-ordinary. It is fun to read, one can learn from it. It also is a sort of self-help book because the right questions are asked in every of the 50 stories. I am sure this is a book that will enlarge the self esteem of many children (and again, I think of BIG children as well). It is an important book for every black girl and boy, parent friend and teacher. It is important for everyone of every skin color.This is a book that, if I could, I would give 6 stars.

I'm glad that this book features the stories of so many black history makers we don't often hear about instead of the same old famous figures. I had never heard of some of them like Mark Dean, Christopher Gardner, Leanna Archer who made (like the title says) amazing contributions to the world .... I'm getting another copy of this book as a gift for my grandchild. I got the Kindle version - but I'm getting the hard copy too because the colorful illustrations make this book really beautiful. It'd be a great gift or coffee table book as well.

A beautiful collection of short accounts of 50 legendary Black people, not JUST Americans, who have been influential in the history of the world. Each includes a positive affirmation and opens the door to conversations every parent should have with his/her child about the world and how to act and react to social injustices. This book should be read by people of every skin color.

This book was a great buy. It’s actually the first book that I can read to my kids that is not all fanciful and imaginary. The book is extensive and has many easy to read stories of heroes in black history. Each personality is summed up in 1-2 pages and the ideas that are found in the writings give the impetus to discuss and teach a lot of points of morality and inspiration to the kids. The funny thing is that I bought it for my kids but ended up learning a lot myself. An excellent buy.

I love reading this at night with my daughter. It has unexpected people diverse fields and after every person it has encouraging words.

This book of bedtime stories is the perfect thoughtful, educational gift that will elevate the way a child dreams! I love that each story is written in a conversational tone, with moments built-in to check in with your child and draw them into the narrative by asking questions they can answer as you read together. And the way that it clearly defines terms so often thrown around (from leadership to respect to heroism), is refreshing and instructive - both for children and the grownups reading with them.

My five year old and I have really enjoyed this book so far. However, the wording in the dedication at the front I thought was a little negative. It's dedicated to everyone who has ever been told they couldn't make it and had their dreams crushed or something like that. Which is fine. And as a person who has, I appreciate that. I just prefer things to be worded in the affirmative in stories designed for kids. After all, even kids who have never had their dreams crushed outright need positive role models and uplifting messages. And you don't have to have had that happen to you to find inspiration in the stories. I thought it was a really dark note on which to start out such a positive collection of success stories.

This book offers a great selection of black heroes who serve as an inspiration to the next generation. I feel my children can really learn a lot from this book. Thankfully, they were really into it the first few nights that we read to them. And they really love the positive affirmations at the end of the book. Theses stories definitely will help their self-esteem and their pride in their history and in their culture. Great job by the author.

I cannot say that I have ever been proud of it" (429). _The Mystery of the Blue Train_ (1928) was her sixth Hercule Poirot mystery-- it was immediately preceeded by _The Big Four_ (1927)-- and was written when she was suffering from a writer's slump. She was also being interrupted during the writing of the novel. But I am in agreement with Robert Barnard. Christie may have disliked the novel, but it is far from her worst piece of writing._The Big Four_ was a rather dismal spy melodrama. _The Mystery of the Blue Train_ is a return to what Christie does best-- the formal detective story. This time, a plot is set in motion around a set of dazzling rubies on the black market. They come into the hands of a tough, hard-boiled American millionaire but are wanted by a ruthless, continental jewel thief. His first attempt to hijack them in Paris goes askew. We also meet the millionaire's spoiled, iron-willed daughter (for whom the jewels are intended), her estranged and indolent husband, his troublemaking dancer mistress, and the daughter's oily Old Flame with whom she plans to elope. Other characters include the efficient male secretary to the millionaire, the maid to the millionaire's daughter, a saintly companion who has recently come into money, her conniving distant cousin, and her cousin's honest and sharp-tongued daughter.Some of these characters board the luxurious Blue Train from Paris to Nice-- along with M. Hercule Poirot. There is a particularly brutal murder _en route_ that turns out to be more complicated to solve than it first appeared. Clues are misleading, stories shift about, and prime suspects change over time. Poirot enlists the aid of one of the passengers to help him solve the mystery.I don't think that it is giving too much away to say that in this novel, appearances can be deceiving. Sometimes what we _think_ we are witnessing is not what is actually happening. But I am betting that even armed with this information, the author will still fool the reader. Incidently, while this is purely a Poirot mystery, it is the first novel that introduces the village of St. Mary Mead-- Miss Marple's home town.

I heartily disliked Agatha Christie's 1928 Poirot novel, "The Mystery of the Blue Train: Hercule Poirot Investigates (Hercule Poirot series Book 6)." Poirot, himself, doesn't make an appearance until after the first 25% of the book, and, in general, most of the story revolves around the petty, crass, self-centered lives of the hoity-toity aristocrats making up the cast. To make things even worse, Poirot has absolutely no evidence to back up his "solution" at the end. Heck, he doesn't even get a confession. He could have just as well said space aliens beamed down from outer space and committed the murder and it would have been just as plausible. So, I'm rating the book at a Pretty Bad 2 stars out of 5.

"The blue train" is an absolute delight and it goes straight to my personal top favourite Poirot mysteries..My enjoyment with Christie's Poirot novels always, always comes from the characters, their history, their reactions. It also comes from the rich accounts of the behaviours and customs characteristic of any milieu Christie chooses for her stories. If the revelation of the culprit is sometimes part of the pleasure, most of the time, like here in "The blue train", it almost doesn't matter to me - because everything that leads to it is such a delight.

This book was just plain boring. I'm an Agatha Christie fan, and don't know how I'd overlooked this book, but I was disappointed in it from beginning to end. Wouldn't recommend it.

You would think after having read a number of her novels, I would not be so surprised about how brilliantly crafted they are but I never fail to be amazed, and Hercule Poirot is such treasure I never get tired of him. The story is easy to read in a day and is a true Christie page turner. The novel occurs on the speeding Blue Train which is the Calais-Paris-Nice Express whisking well heeled folks on their way to a fun-filled winter in the paradise of the French Riviera. The plot involves the theft of the pricless Heart of Fire necklace and the murder of the adultery minded Katherine Kettering. She is seeking divorce from her playboy money worshipping cad of a husband . Her father the millionaire Rufus Van Allen has given her the necklace as a gift. Ruth is murdered by stragulation on the Blue Train; Hercule Poirot is there to assist French police in the solving of the crime. Katherine Grey also assists in unmasking the murderer. Katherine is an attractive woman who has inherited a fortune from an old lady she had served as an aide while living in St Mary Mead. The book reads quickly and is filled with fascinating characters such as:Comte Armand De La Roche-the lover of Katherine Kettering.Derek Kettering-the husband of Katherine and a man infatuated with lovely ladies. This is more of a notice than a full review. There are recipes for pork, lobster and shellfish in this book, so be aware if you think this is a kosher book. I didn't take off a star for that. I took off a star, because I found what appears to be at least one mistake during a cursory examination. The recipe for gefilte fish states in the introduction that the author adds smoked whitefish to add texture and taste; however, there is no mention of smoked whitefish in the ingredient list or the instructions. I was disappointed with that, because I was looking forward to something different. Otherwise, the pictures look nice, and I think I would try a couple of the recipes.

What a disappointment. Perhaps the restaurant these chefs own has fabulous food but this cookbook is a total waste. Many pages of less than stellar photography. I guess using typewriter print is supposed to be artsy but its unattractive and difficult to read. Seems like they were trying to fill lots of pages with not a wealth of original or interesting recipes. Layout is not useful. Obviously how the recipes would be used was not taken into consideration. The book looks like it was put together by grade school children.

While the illustrations were wonderful, the subject matter called for a more serious tone. Most of the illustrations are in black and white, while Anne’s diary is a bright orange and yellow gingham. There is also a fair amount of symbolism in the pictures, white birds when there is happiness and hope, black birds when things take a turn for the worse.Being a book for young children that covers very heavy subject matter, there had to be a delicate balance between communicating the tragedy of what happened while keeping it appropriate for little ones. I do think the author accomplished this, and the beautifully detailed black and white illustrations went a long way in helping to set the tone. Unlike many of the other books in this collection, Anne Frank is sad story steeped in history, a terrible, painful, shameful history. I’d certainly read it with my children who are going to be eight in a week, but I would also be prepared for a lot of questions, questions about topics many parents might not have broached with their young children. For parents who haven’t, I think this book is a wonderful gateway to meaningful and age-appropriate discussions about topics that seem particularly salient today.Still loving this series and very much looking forward to the next one!Note: I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley. I have always felt a connection to Anne Frank and her story, I believe it was made during junior high when I first read A Diary of a Young Girl. Knowing that we were of similar age at the time, had a love of writing, and a yearning to make a difference in the world; I assumed that if given the opportunity the two of us would have been BFF's.I love this biography of Anne Frank, because it makes her story accessible to young readers. The story begins with some background to who Anne was (an ordinary girl) when she received her diary, and the historical events that led up to Anne and her family having to hide in the secret annex of a warehouse.The focus of the book thereafter remained heavily on the diary and how Anne dreamed of becoming a writer. Due to her early death at the Bergen-Belsen camp in 1945, it was her father Otto (the only secret annex survivor) had her diary published so her story may be shared with readers forever. This fact, alongside others are shared in the books end pages which also includes a timeline of Anne's life and where to find more information about her

This is not an easy story to tell, and especially not to an audience that is still so young and innocent, without any idea of the evil that can exist in the world.There are a lot of complex ideas and horrible historic events that needed to be cut down to size to be able to tell Anne Frank's story in a way that makes sense to little children. In as much as any of it can make sense...I think the author and the illustrator both did a tremendous job. I'm in awe.The drawings are done in an elegant & understated style, with a lot of fine lines and details. Almost too sophisticated for a children's book, almost.The illustrations are very lovely, the lack of color in the black and white drawings adding a sense of doom and impending sorrow to the story. The only thing that is colored in, is Anne's diary and only at the very end of the book. Very reminiscent of the little girl's red coat in the Schindler's List movie.I also really liked the symbolism of the recurring white swans (hope?), which are later replaced by a flock of black crows that fly over the pages, bringing to us the despair of the concentration camps.I loved the little moments of playfulness and gaiety that were added to the story to lift the reader's spirit a bit and show the happiness that was also a part of Anne's short life. We see Anne gleefully peeking out from behind the hidden door leading to her family's hideaway, for example, or blowing out candles on a birthday cake.I absolutely recommend this book!
