An interesting look, we have a life style property with a sloping section at one place so this book could be useful.

I am not a "construction type person" (actually a pharmacist by profession) but with the help of this book I was able to build a 30'x 22' storage barn. The book was very clear on the basics of building a pole building and provided enough information to complete my project. I am 110% happy with the results of my barn (leaks just a little...which can easily be fixed...but I built it myself) and would recommend this book to anyone that has never built anything before.

This book appears to expect one to have a pretty good sense of building. Some projects are on one page and have extremely limited details. More of a reference book, not a "how to" book.

This book came up on my recommended books list. Its a new author and i truly wanted to like this book. I read 6 chapters. However, that's the most i could do. I could not finish. The beginning didn't pull me in and i continued to read thinking it wld get better. It did not.

This book was sweet and sad, definitely not what I thought based on the title. It was a good read though and put me in my feelings just a little. It made you examine if you're actually living life to the fullest. I loved Hosea's character and how much love he showed daisy.

I can honestly say when I first saw the book, I judged that it was going to be a raunchy sex book. To my surprise it was very funny and relatable. I may not be as successful nor dealing with a illness, to see myself in the character Daisy. She's the definition of a strong black woman. I strongly believe all black men should definitely read this book, Hosea character is a prime example of how men should be with thier feelings. I can't wait to read more books from Nailah Knowles.

Not your typical AA Urban writing. No criminals, dysfunctional families or struggle story. The author highlighted relatable topics such as seeking success, love, health. I like that there was not necessarily a "happily ever after" kind of ending but there was resolve to pressing issues for the leading characters. Definitely will continue to follow this author who's catalogue ranges from discovery of self worth, marriage journeys, story lines that are not dated,and some erotic poetry.

This is a book for people who are Gluten Free but wants maximum flavor and "gluten like foods."I watched ATK on TV since I was in college when I first starting cooking my own meals. I love the how to chips and the science behind all the recipes. I discovered I am gluten sensitive about six months ago and I wanted some REAL TASTING bake goods. I bake often for friends and families. The thought of never baking again, was depressing. I borrowed several GF cookbooks from the library to test run some recipes before purchasing ATK's How Can It Be Gluten Free . So far, my whole family loved the bake goods from this book.I have a few notes before I get to my favorite recipes:1. You do have to understand you will need to make your own GF "flour mix" but the upside is, there is only ONE FORMULA for everything in this book. Another book I tried had five mixes and I haven't been able to gather all the items needed for that book.2. You must read the intro to each recipes at least once. It gives you important information. Sometimes, you must read tips of similar recipes to get all the info. For example, under Chocolate Chip cookies, there is a tip on how to make your own frozen cookie dough.3. If you want real tasting box pasta, read the test kitchen recommendation. IT IS SO GOOD!4. Bread recipes need a standing mixer. Most recipes mix by hands. Some call for a blender or a food processor.I bought the book for the bake goods so those are the recipes I tried multiple times with success:Banana Bread: My husband brought a loaf to work and they are asking for more.Lemon Pound Cake: Brought it to a party and no one suspected.Applesauce Snack Cakes: THE BEST and EASY RECIPE in the BOOK. My twins would eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.Chocolate Chip Cookies: Moist and Chewy. Brought it to several parties and everyone love it.Chewy Sugar Cookies: Perfect texture, maybe a bit lack in favor but my kids love it.Classic Sandwich Bread (which I also made hamburger buns): Taste better than anything store bought but it does dry out fast.Dinner Roll: My husband loves it with lots of butter, but it already has a lot of butter in it!Cheddar Cheese Bread: If you miss a good cheesy bagel taste, this is a similar in flavor. The texture is slightly crumbly. Yeast Free.Multigrain Sandwich Bread: BEST BREAD recipe that I tried so far, moist and flavorful. It kept moist for four days in an airtight glass container.Recipe tried but need to try again:Oatmeal Cookies: I thought they were dry. When it ran out before the chocolate chip cookies which I thought was better. So what do it know.Blueberry Muffins: They were pasty and pale but my husband and the neighbors thought they were pretty good.Brazilian cheese Bread Roll: They have a Asian Mochi like texture. My family did not find it appealing so I ate most of it myself.I am yet to tried the pie crust and pizza crust recipe but soon, I hope. It will be Thanksgiving before you know it.

I've been a subscriber to Cooks Illustrated for years now. I've always adjusted their recipes containing gluten for my Celiac husband, and avoiding their baking recipes has been disappointing. So I was thrilled to see this cookbook in my Amazon suggestions.I've so far flipped through many recipes and reviewed the recipe for sandwich bread and pizza crust, and am looking forward to trying both out this weekend. What I love about this book is the science and testing for each recipe is recorded with the recipe so you know why certain ingredients are added or omitted. Then if you want to adjust a bit you can do so with the knowledge of why a recipe is built the way it is.The big bonus in this book: there is a recipe for a gluten free flour mix, but weights and measurements for two other popular store bought flour mixes are provided for each recipe. If you've ever tried to buy ingredients for a gluten free flour mix in a regular grocery store you know it can be tough to find some, but easier to find pre-packaged mixes, so this is a huge bonus.The only drawback I can see is for someone who is not a more seasoned cook/doesn't enjoy cooking, some of the recipes are advanced. The directions are always easy to follow, but the outcome can vary depending on your take on the directions. For instance, instructions are provided on how to measure flour for the gluten free flour mix. Part of the instructions include tapping or lightly packing the flour as you scoop it into the measuring cup. My tap vs my husband's tap are completely different levels of pressure, and would result in slightly different flour mixes which could vary a recipe enough to be noticeable. Luckily weights are included, which is the best way to measure baking ingredients, but there are other directions included that could be taken differently.Really looking forward to trying many of the recipes in this book! If you have a gluten intolerance and love to cook, this is a must buy book! Or if you're fed up with the yucky pre-packaged gluten free foods, give some of the recipes in this book a try.UPDATE: The sandwich bread recipe in this book makes THE BEST gluten free sandwich bread I've ever had. I don't have to eat gluten free, so I know what real sandwich bread taste like, and this is pretty darn close in taste. It's right on the money with texture, not gritty or dry at all, and only a bit denser with a nice, crisp crust. Plus its a really easy recipe. Most of the ingredients are easy to find even at your local supermarket. The powdered psyllium husk was the hardest to locate. Check your grocers health supplements aisle, or stop by a vitamin shop. It's used as a laxative. I ate two pieces of this bread on the same night and didn't have any issues, so don't worry about accidental laxative effects. Also, the only 4.5" x 8.5" loaf pan I had is glass, and that worked great.UPDATE 2: I continue to try recipes in this book and haven't had a bad one yet. I haven't delved heavily into the baking section other than making several loaves of the sandwich bread (which is still amazing), but I did try the arepas recipe which was great. The Almost Hands-Free Risotto can be found in back issues of Cooks Illustrated and likely in their other cook books, and is fantastic as always.

Fan-freaking-tastic. This old celiac has learned to bake! I have tested these recipes on family and friends who are not gluten free. In many cases they say these recipes are indistinguishable from traditional flour. In one case, the Sugar Cookie, they say it's the best they ever had, bar none.The recipes are a bit complex at first. But over time the prep becomes second nature. When I try a new recipe, it doesn't feel complex now. In fact many of the steps are similar across similar recipes.I've made all of these over and over again. All of them are better than anything from the store or even a professional gluten free bakery. I've been to dozen of bakeries across multiple states. I thought many of them were fantastic. They all pale in comparison to what I can make at home now, and for much less.The flour this book taught me to make costs me less than $2 a lb. I used to purchase mixes that were $6-8 per lb. Quite a savings and much better than any other I've tried.Recipes that others love and ask about:Sugar CookieChocolate chip cookieBrowniePie CrustPancakesPumpkin bread - all the sweet breadsmuffinsmeatballsRecipes that are at least better than store bought:BreadPizza crust - I hear volume 2 has a better recipebreading for fried foodsThis was all off the top of my head.Some people can't have dairy. Fear Strikes Out is one of the game's most dramatic autobiographies. It is also one of the most important. When first published in 1955, it ventured into territory traditionally considered out of play for a sports story. "I must have been quite a card when I first broke into baseball's big league as a Boston Red Sox rookie in 1952," Piersall opens rather cheerily. He was a baseball clown, and the fans loved his offbeat shenanigans. One paragraph later, he tosses a huge, hanging curve. "Almost everybody...thought I was a riot. My wife knew I was sick, yet she was helpless to stop my mad rush toward a mental collapse." In time, Piersall would become one of the silkiest centerfielders of the '50s--no mean feat given his contemporaries Mantle and Mays. A new afterword by Piersall catches us up to his later years (and stunts) in baseball and his post-career as a broadcaster. Fear is actually a prologue to that. It's a courageous story. Piersall's demons had him by the throat and nearly choked him. Written at a very young age, after he'd only been an established major-league baseball player for three full seasons, "Fear Strikes Out" chronicles Jim Piersall's struggles with mental illness, and the ultimate breakdown that led to his being hospitalized in a mental institution during the 1952 season. The book came out in 1955, and must have been fairly ground-breaking in its day. While such a book written today would include a lot more specific detail about diagnosis and treatment (at the time, Piersall was only said to have had "nervous exhaustion"), Piersall leads the reader step-by-step through his condition. Several passages in the book are written in first-person narrative, as the author illustrates Piersall's uncontrolled racing thoughts. Piersall then blacks out, losing several months of his life in 1952, and awakening in the "violent ward" of a State mental hospital after having undergone electro-shock therapy (this book pre-dates "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"). It's only after that that Piersall describes, in slow-motion and painful detail, the symptoms and behavior that prematurely ended his 1952 baseball season and which led to his waking up in the violent ward.Piersall holds back few of his thought processes in the months and years leading up to his breakdown. He describes his mother's history of mental illness, and father's demanding personality (which, according to Piersall, was then over-played as a plot point for the 1957 movie adaptation).The book is dated, in a few senses. Piersall is told that that he can simply wish, or think away, his mental illness; from a modern perspective, I assume this would now be regarded as incorrect or at least incomplete advice. Also, the book is written basically as one single chapter, with few breaks between sections; modern sports autobiographies no longer tend to look like this (although it does make the book harder to put down!).Happily, Jim Piersall is still alive today. He ended up playing in the big leagues for parts of 16 seasons, and slugged over 100 career home runs, with his 100th most memorably coming as a member of the New York Mets, which he celebrated by running the bases backward. He was then famously paired with Harry Caray as a Chicago White Sox broadcaster in the late 1970s, and later spent many years as an instructor and scout with the Chicago Cubs. While many passages in the book are painful to read, in terms of their honesty and level of detail, the incidents that are portrayed are now nearly 65 years old, and Piersall has wound up with what appears to be a happy ending.

This book was published in 1955. For the time it was published it was remarkable how candid Piersall was about his illness. Back then this type of illness was usually only talked about in hushed tones. For just writing this book candidly Piersall should be highly commended. I'm sure this went a long way for people to understand mental illness better. In this book Piersall goes though his young life to his days of treatment with mental illness. He had a somewhat harsh upbringing. His mother had mental illness and was treated successfully for it. His father could be very harsh at times but was supportive of Piersall's athletic pursuits. Piersall was a fine athlete in high school. Excelling in basketball as well as baseball. He probably could have excelled in football too but his dad forbade him to play it. Piersall quickly went through the Red Sox farm system and made the team in 1952. But his mental illness overtook him during that season and was eventually taken to a mental facility for treatment. He was treated successfully there and went on to a good MLB career. No mention though as to what kind of treatments he had. That would have been interesting to read about and compare to todays treatments. He also has written a small portion at the end in 1999. But not much was written about how he has progressed since his time as a player. Although you can read in other places as to some things that went on his life after his playing days. This is a good book but there is so much more that could have been written and followed up on. He is still alive (Though I do not know his overall health condition) so maybe he can relate more details sometime soon to fill in some of the blanks left in this book.

"Fear Strikes Out" tells the tale of Jimmy Piersall, who played for the Boston Red Sox in the early to late 1950s. He and Willy Mays of the Giants were the best defensive center fielders in pro baseball then and perhaps ever. "FSO" is more concerned with Jimmy's nervous breakdown in 1952 and his subsequent recovery. The real story should be his patient wife, without whom Piersall would have been at sea. The Catholic Church has canonized people for less! "FSO" skims along the edges of Jimmy's problems but to its' credit does not sweep them under a rug. The problems may be sanitized but not trivialized. In my opinion, the true meat of the book is its' 1950s American League backdrop, which I'm just barely old enough to remember. Red Sox fans should enjoy reading about Ted Lepcio, Lou Boudreau, Ellis Kinder, Joe Cronin and Billy Goodman. "FSO" has a limited scope and appeal. The 1950s sportsworld was lilly white and not given to tell all, dirt digging locker room scoops and the book reflects that era. Jimmy gets a free pass on some (not all) of his antics. Readers who accept those constraints should find "FSO" enjoyable and worthwhile. Anyone with a dad or uncle, etc who is a hardcore Red Sox fan has a great Christmas present to click unto.

Bought this book after Jim Piersall passed away. I heard the announcers mention his life. Next thing you know I bought the book and just loved it! It brought back some great baseball memories and facts. LOVED LOVED the book...

Henry and Mudge is a great series for young readers and parents!Amusing and interesting. Great to spark a love of reading!Highly recommend!

I truly wish this book had existed when I was in school. If you want a painless introduction to the very core of computer science, This is it!The concepts that are explained in the book are useful for any level, from beginner to advanced in my opinion. It has helped me tremendously to strengthen concepts I had trouble with in the past, and the author manages to explain it in a way that's light and entertaining at the same time.I'm particularly glad that the author starts from the ground up, with a gentle introduction to the Maths you will need. Very few books (If any) take the trouble of dedicating a couple of chapters to Math alone before diving into how it's used in Computer Science.The title of the book perfectly summarizes what the author managed to successfully do, which is to 'Distill' every CS concept and present it in a way that's brain-friendly. In Summary, the best introduction to CS you will ever find.

I absolutely enjoyed this book. I would highly recommend it for people new to programming and computer science. I think Wladston has done an outstanding job making the concepts in this book easily digestible. As a newcomer to computer science, not once did I scratch my head or felt overwhelmed by the information in this book. Wladston in my opinion did an outstanding job explaining the concepts through pseudocode and visuals. The satire images also helped with the explanation and keeping it fun. Though I wish there were a view more. This is a great book for getting your feet wet with computer science. I can't wait for a follow up on this book or one that tackles a more specialized area. Great Job!

My first impression was, "this thing is tiny" and it is. It's 160 pages about half an inch thick, but once you dive into the material you realize it's very full of information and it takes a while to digest. I'm 3 hours deep and have only read 27 pages. It cuts right down to the point, exactly as the title describes

I am a self-taught python coder, who wanted to learn more about the field without getting bogged down in details for 4 years. So I bought this book to help me get a good overview of major concepts in computer science.The book does a great job of giving the reader a broad overview of computing concepts ranging from time complexity to databases to memory management.It’s a great reference for anyone who wants to expand his/her/their horizons beyond their immediate field of expertise.I found the book easy and fun to read. Also I discovered some concepts that I’d like to explore further.I’d recommend this book to anyone who has gotten into programming from a non-sc background.

It's a good but brief overview of Computer Science. It however leaves out some important pieces from the sections that I was already familiar with, e.g. failing to mention that in a Set all the items must be distinct/unique. Also, I think using pseudo code for the examples was a very poor choice. First of all, the code is already nearly the same as what it would look like in real Python code. Second, it doesn't make it any easier to understand for someone new to coding. If the author were trying to make it easy to understand an algorithm, it would have been better to use a kind of literate code (like cooking recipes). I think it's a pretty good jumping off point, but I felt disappointed overall. As a different starting point I'd recommendGrokking Algorithms by Aditya Bhargava.

I really like this book. It has a nice soft cover, and I like the use of colorful emojis in the examples. It provides clear and concise introductions to a variety of computer science concepts. I am just getting started on my journey trying to teach myself programming, and this book provides a decent explanation for some entry level concepts that I may have heard of before in passing, but now feel confident enough about to discuss with my friends with actual degrees in CS.

I enjoyed the information about data structures, algorithms and computer architecture. There are lots of typos in this book, but they won't prevent you from learning some valuable stuff.

This book is exactly what I was looking for. When learning programming, you're usually taught a lot of tricks and techniques without fully understanding how they originated or are related.Upon reading this book I immediately recognised certain topics that I've come across before in disjoint ways and without context (things like endianness, probability theory and Big O notation for e.g.). The book does a great job of collecting, organising and explaining these concepts in an easily digestible format. It starts with core concepts, moves on to how these are expressed language constructs and in the hardware, and then concludes with some practical implementations of these concepts in things anyone learning programming would recognise.I'd highly recommend for anyone who has even a remote interest in learning from first principles and who has a mind for problem-solving and using code creatively vs. simple rote application of programming techniques and frameworks.
