Nine-year old enjoys this series. He likes the characters. The books prompt some discussions of a variety of content because the settings vary widely. This one has a ghost, hotel, dumbwaiter, actors and attempted unethical business deal. It's a decent read. In the A to Z series, I prefer The Invisible Island, The Mayflower Treasure Hunt, and the The Sleepy Hollow Sleepover. Oh, and the one about the mummies. The Haunted Hotel is good, but I like some of the others better because the kids get into more dangerous predicaments.

My son loves these books. Great read for him. He's 8. It holds his attention. He reads it from cover to cover at one time. As a parent it's great to have a child that loves to read. I would recommend this book.

Son loves these series

My first grader and I are reading this together. There's a lot of difficult words in it that he can't quite read yet so I definitely have to help him with it however it's pretty simply written and he likes zombies!

My second grade son started reading this series of books when he made the move to chapter books. They are not as difficult as Hardy Boys and are a very fun easy read. There are a few illustrations sprinkled throughout the book which my son really enjoys.I would consider a set if you are going to buy these as a gift.

My grandson loved this book

My kids love the A to Z mysteries. I'd recommend them all.

My son enjoyed reading this

A remarkable and worthwhile guide. This guide is immediate and thorough; it gives a host of places and activities that could fulfill even the most bored tourist's desires. [The authors] take us away from palm beaches, island vistas and rugged emerald mountains and put us in touch with the people who inhabit these beautiful places. Those of us who have seen the southern Windwards as a special place for so long have reason to be thankful and relieved. --Paul Tyler, Caribbean CompassThis is an excellent guidebook for the area and is highly recommended. --A travelerBursting with relevant and exciting information. --Booklist

I thought that this would have more information in about activities, etc. like kayaking or walking tours. However, I didn't find that the book has very much information about different types of outdoor activities and getting around. Also, the type is very big. I suppose that is helpful for people with bad eyesight, but it didn't make me happy. I prefer a smaller book with more information like Lonely Planet. The reviews of the hotels seemed to be biased. The thing that I liked about this book was that it had interesting review of the Grand Etang park.

#2,197,185 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

My 17 month old has recently taken an interest in anything to do with animals, so when I saw this book, I decided to give it a try so I could read/show it to him and show him what the animals look like when they're young. Overall, I am pleased with the book especially given that right now, it's free.Pros:- It has 50 pages of baby animals from dogs, to horses, to rabbits; even to turtles. The baby animals facts are short (it just says what the animal is called as a baby), but it's intended for children, so that's ok.- The pictures of animals are close up shots. Some of the books i've been reading to my son show the animal at a distance, or with other animals. This book, however, shows each animal solely so your child can easily distinguish which animal it is.- It's a super easy read. If your kids are like my son, they're constantly throwing a book in your lap to read. I can zip through this book in about 4-5 minutes flat, getting it out of my son's blood for about an hour.- You may actually learn something as an adult. There were several animals in this book that I had no idea what they're classified as when they're young. For instance, I never knew a baby horse was called foal.Cons: (none. for the price, you really can't gripe about this book)To my 17 month old son, this book is awesome as he can see many different baby animals in a different light from his other animal books. I would recommend this book to any parent looking to entertain their child with something other than a television.

Disclaimer:I did receive this product for FREE for me to test and give my 100% honest truth and I will continue to give my 100% truth so that the shoppers and sellers of Amazon and other companies. I got this book to read to my kids (5, 3 & 2). I liked the idea of the book, and thought that they would enjoy the shadow animals to guess what animal they were.I think the idea of the book is that the pages open up and on the right side, it has the shadow shape of an animal and on the left, 3 choices for what animal it is. Then on the following 2 pages, it shows a color picture and lists several facts about each animal.Unfortunately, this only followed through the first several animals. After that, the pages open up and it has the color picture on the facing page to the shadow picture. And then it just gets a little jumbled after that. Still the same order, but the shadows sometimes appear on the left side, or the right side, and the facts go through a page turn, etc. As if a page break is missed here and there and it doesn't follow through quite right. My 3 year old was able to very quickly identify the shadow shapes, without needing the choices (except for the shark, I think he thought it was a fish, but when given the choices chose the shark, which I thought was impressive. I thought he would get stuck on what he thought it was and not be able to change his mind). The color photos are nice quality.I learned several facts about different animals in this book. I think at least 1 new thing for each animal listed. Which I was surprised by. I think the facts are terrific and unique (I just trusted them and haven't done any further research, which I may do if using the book in our homeschool lessons).

I ordered this “Baby Animals Galore For Kids: Picture Book for Children” Kindle Edition for my 2 year old daughter. It is exactly what it says it is. It is a picture book, with only a few words, which is absolutely perfect for her. There are enough words to keep her attentive and focused, but more pictures, which is what she really loves, especially for a 2-year-old, who has a harder time listening to all the words in some books. This is perfect for her age and would also be perfect for young readers. It was even perfect for me, as I thoroughly enjoyed the engaging photos. The pictures in this book are especially nice, crisp, and professional. They are of wonderfully adorable little baby animals, soft and fluffy, sweet and inviting. Some of the pictures show them with their parents, others by themselves just relaxing or playing. You can’t look at this book without wanting to reach out and snuggle them. Most of the baby names are commonly known which is great for kids. We absolutely enjoyed reading and enjoying this book together. If you love baby animals, you will enjoy this sweet little book. I received this book at a discount for my honest review.

I have a little girl that loves reading books and looking at pictures. I got this for her to look at and she had a great time with it. She has always loved animals, and making sounds like them. When she started looking at the pictures in this book she enjoyed learning about other animals she doesn't normally see. As she recognized something she got so excited and would jump up and down, or yell with excitement. This book is really neat and teaches the names off all the baby animals as well. This book made her want to learn and read more. It has really good pictures and is enjoyable for my wife and I as well. My little girl loves to learn new things and loves to play on the phone or any other electronic device. Having this book on my phone is very nice for me because I work at home managing an apartment complex. So there are many times when I have to leave real quick and take care of something. She can come with me and play on my phone as I work. So far my little girl has enjoyed having this book on my phone and I hope she will continue to enjoy having them. I have received this item for free. In return I must give a honest and unbiased review.

The WWII Japanese Internment camps represent a sad, embarrassing chapter in American history, which is probably why I never read about it during my time in school. Over 110,000 Japanese people were forcibly sent to 1 of 10 camps throughout the West. The majority of the internees were actually U.S. citizens, some 2nd or 3rd generation. The author was only 7 when her family was bused from Los Angeles to Manzanar in a remote corner of the Eastern Sierra between Mt. Whitney and Death Valley. The camp wasn't even completed yet when the first internees arrived. Families were assigned half of a flimsy barracks building with no walls for privacy. They ate communal meals and used communal toilets. The climate was hostile, with heavy winds howling down off of the mountains kicking up dust constantly. The cold winter weather penetrated the thin tar-papered walls of the barracks buildings. In spite of the remote, hostile environment, the inhabitants worked to make their temporary home more comfortable, by decorating and building partitions. They cultivated vegetable gardens and harvested fruit from the orchards. Kids went to school; babies were conceived and born at the camp. In short, life went on. However, the camp life lead to an inevitable deterioration in the family structure. Meals were communal rather than family events, and parents had no way of providing for their families in the traditional method. Jeanne's father had a very difficult time in camp, and deteriorated into alcoholism. As she wrote in the book though her life started in camp, her father's life ended there. He never recovered his fishing business or his sense of self worth. The book provides an insightful glimpse into the daily life in the camps as well as the emotional and economic toll extracted from the inhabitants. They lost their businesses, their homes, their way of life and their dignity. In a sad commentary on the personal havoc wreaked by the camps, the author noted that the last to leave were the elderly people; they had nothing to return to, and no energy or confidence to go back into their old communities and rebuild so they hung onto camp life until forced to leave.I had the opportunity to visit the desolate, remote Manzanar camp in 2012. Only a couple of barracks are left, but there is an excellent visitor center that faithfully recreates what it must have been to live there. You can drive around the roads and see how large the camp was. The magnificent mountain range looms large on the horizon, with tantalizing beauty and freedom, which was denied to those inside the barbed wire fences.Farewell to Manzanar is a beautifully written important memoir since there is so little written about that time. Pay no attention to the number of 1 and 2-star reviews. It appears that most of those are written by school age children who were forced to read the book and do a review, and probably didn't appreciate the cultural significance of the internment camps.

A personal account of how devastating it was for Japanese-Americans to be rounded up and interned during WWII. Previously I had only a vague notion of the facts. Reading this book was like living the fear, shame, and deprivation right along with the Wakatsuki family. After Pearl Harbor, when a new Federal policy labeled Japanese-Americans as undesirables and exiled them to remote desert camps, the plucky Wakatsukis, and over a hundred thousand more like them, struggled daily to preserve their family life and their self-respect despite degrading conditions and helpless dependence on handouts. As the war drew to a close the camps were shut down, but their effects on the interned Japanese-Americans were lifelong and reached into the next generation. This small but powerful book is a page-turner.

I read this book with my three boys (ages 13 and a pair of 12 year old twins) as an adjunct to Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. I read Diary of a Young Girl as a pre-read for the twins' 7th grade literature assignments coming up this school year. The book was dreaded by the boys but ended up being "not so bad." As an additional perspective on WWII, following the recommendation of the twins' academic counselor, we read this book, which was very good and a bit more relevant to half-Chinese kids growing up in California.Farewell to Manzanar is a memoir, written by a woman who was 7 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. She is a Nissei, which is a first-generation Japanese; her father left Japan as a young man to try his luck in the U.S. The story starts with her memories of December 7, 1941, and moves through the multiple relocations and forced evacuations and mysterious arrest and imprisonment of her father. She describes Camp Manzanar, and reflects poignantly about her father's emotional challenges and her own struggle with racial and cultural duality. This is a lovely, low-commitment read which lends touching insight not only into the terrible way Japanese-American civilians were treated by the American government, but also, more broadly, the challenges I believe all Asian cultures face - the dilemma of assimilation v. individual rights. Racial bias exists in the oddest places and often, when encountered, is either innocuous or ridiculous enough to warrant disbelief, dismissal. However, the stain of personal shame is unavoidable in all of these situations, and Farewell to Manzanar eloquently depicts this exquisite conundrum.

WARNING! CONTAINS SPOILERS! I am eleven years old and I read this book for summer reading. I am an advanced reader but it was very confusing because the times and years kept bouncing around. It is a true story mainly about a girl, who is the youngest of ten, from a Japanese- American family during World War II. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, they're sent to an internment camp. SPOILER ALERT! Her dad is sent to jail for allegedly sending oil to Japan. In the beginning of the story, Jeanne is seven years old , but she is about 35 at the end. The story is set in the internment camp, middle school, high school, and home. It is a very sad book, but also happy. When I finished the book, I was both sad and confused. I give this book three stars because the book was kind of interesting but confusing at the same time. If I could change anything, I would put the story actually in chronological order, instead of the storyline bouncing around. My favorite part was the end when Jeanne comes back to the internment camp with her kids years later and she looks around, remembering funny and sad memories. It was the most emotional part of the story. I would recommend this book to teens and adults.

As an American girl, marrying an Iraqi man a bit older than myself, in the early 1960's, I saw many degrees of these attitudes and behaviors portrayed in this book. I have to say, despite the battles it took, we had 45 years of relative happiness and a great family. I also enjoyed the familiar Arabic words and things they ate. We all loved the delicious Arabic food my husband made. There are so many great qualities in these people. It's difficult to think that this was and is the way some of them still think!!!! Anyway, thank you, Etaf. P.S. They can be convinced otherwise.

I love reading about other cultures. This book made me feel the main characters. I had so much empathy for these women. I also thought the ending could not have been done any better. Perfect.

I can't imagine living a life of such restriction and abuse. Being a woman in many parts of the world is a liability and a handicap. When did men decide this? When did it become shameful to be a woman? Women were celebrated and revered, idolized in some civilizations. Extremism in any society is dangerous. I give tremendous kudos for this author for shedding light on this belief that women are disposable beings. It's a terrible reality. A reality that should be fought against through education of both men and women in the Islamic/Muslim world. I find light in this author's courage to tell it. I find abundant courage in all women who tell this story.

I absolutely loved this book. It brought so many tears to my eyes. Yes a bit repetitive in the dialogue of the characters. But I thought the author was so brave to speak about the injustices that Arabic women go through. As a woman you can't help but to just sympathize. I personally hated the ending but overall it's a raw, heartfelt beautiful story.

This was a tough read from beginning to end.Be prepared to meet Isra and immediately be introduced to the depressive condition that is her life—written in its raw, unapologetic, and wholly frustrating form.I despised everyone.Everyone.Isra’s mother for her enabling of her daughter’s submissions, Fareeda for her role in keeping Isra in a state of stagnation, Khaled for resigning himself to a role he would come to champion for his useless sons ...just ...ugh!All of them made me want to break stuff. The fact that the book speaks to ideals based within the Arab culture didn’t change my perspective on these characters: I still despised many of them and kept waiting on them to be something more than enablers and abusers.I guess I’m too Westernized to read something like this because I simply couldn’t forgive Isra’s resignation. At all.Again, I understand the book is meant to show how restrictive life for a woman can be within the Arab culture, but a lot of what happens to Isra felt, at times, like willful ignorance/downright stupidity. She couldn’t get out of her own way. It was as if she decided the devil she knew was better than the one she didn’t—no matter the hell she was currently living. The writing itself was great. Rum understood where she wanted to go with the story and each one of her characters. In the end, my issue with this book was accepting a world where women are painfully irrelevant; to the point they’re driven to tragic extremes to find anything resembling true freedom. That was too big of a pill for me to swallow—no matter what truth it’s based in.

{My Thoughts}What Worked For MeA Mother/Daughter Story – A Woman Is No Man is a big, big story. It’s about an entire culture and how that culture looks at women. And, it’s about that culture’s expectations for women and what can happen when those expectations aren’t met. Most of all, it’s about women struggling to find their own voices within that culture and escaping the culture altogether. Through mother, Isra, and daughter, Deya, we see the very harsh realities of the Palestinian Muslim culture fighting to remain unchanged even after having been transplanted into Brooklyn.“Where I come from, voicelessness is the condition of my gender, as normal as the bosoms on a woman’s chest, as necessary as the next generation growing inside her belly. But we will never tell you this, of course. Where I come from, we’ve learned to conceal our condition. We’ve been taught to silence ourselves, that our silence will save us.”Isra comes to America as a young bride, newly wed to a man she barely knows. Deya, the eldest of her four daughters, was born an American, but experiences none of the freedoms other American women take for granted.“It wasn’t her fault she wasn’t Arab enough. She had lived her entire life straddled between two cultures. She was neither Arab nor American. She belonged nowhere. She didn’t know who she was.”The balance between these two women, the back and forth stories of Isra and Deya were at the heart of A Woman Is No Man. Through mother and daughter the reader comes to know the culture and the pain of being female in world that places supreme value on men, whether they deserve it or not.Developing Mystery – I hadn’t expected there to be a mystery within A Woman Is No Man, but at the heart of the story that’s exactly what I found. When we first meet Deya she’s in her last year at an all girls Muslim high school, and the process of finding a husband to marry her off to has begun. Deya wants to go to college, but that’s not even a consideration in her family. As she takes small steps to fight the confines of her life, Deya’s thoughts turn more and more to Isra who died when Deya was only 6. Deya’s memories of her mother are few, but even so the stories she’s been told don’t quite add up and Deya begins a quiet quest to learn more. How exactly did her mother die and why did she always seem so sad and distant toward Deya? This mystery, played out from both Isra’s and Deya’s storylines, became the core of Rum’s story.Fareeda – A third woman, Fareeda, plays a very big role in A Woman Is No Man. Fareeda is the mother of Isra’s husband, Adam. From the moment the marriage takes place, Fareeda demands sons for Adam. As Isra delivers daughter after daughter, her value in the family grows smaller and smaller, even to other women. Fareeda was harsh, even cruel to Isra, and though kinder to Deya, she still would not even consider her granddaughter’s wishes. Fareeda was an easy character to dislike, so I appreciated that in Part II of the book, Rum introduced us to Fareeda’s perspective. She upended some of my opinions about Fareeda. It didn’t make me like her much more, but the life she had endured at least made me understand her a little better.“She had known, even before seeing the mournful look on his face, that he would be disappointed. She hadn’t blamed him. The shame of her gender was engraved on her bones.”What Didn’tDevaluing of Women – Though at the heart of the culture and key to the story, the treatment of women in A Woman Is No Man was hard to stomach. Isra regularly suffered physical and mental abuse at the hand of her husband, while everyone else in the family turned a blind eye. The relentless pressure to produce a son and Isra’s dismissal as a person of worth when she did not felt heartless.Isra Herself – Though I felt very sad for Isra, I also grew weary of her long-suffering, self-defeating thoughts. I realize that she was raised to NOT place any value on herself, but her constant helplessness and hopelessness grew too repetitive. I felt like her many insecurities were beat into the story over and over.{The Final Assessment}For the most part I liked A Woman Is No Man very much, especially the first half of the story. By the second half, I’d grown a little tired of all the suffering, and just wanted to get to something more positive happening. Thankfully, that did occur. I only wish there had been a few more bright spots along the way. Grade: BNote: I received a copy of this book from Harper Collins (via Edelweiss) in exchange for my honest review. Thank you!

We homeschool so I was excited to incorporate this into our homeschool curriculum, especially since we are currently studying early American history. This book was pretty dry, there were small blurbs of text with a dull and boring background followed by a photograph of a Native person.I didn't feel like it provided a lot of new information. The tales were very generalized without naming which tribe had a specific ideal or which tribes had specific 'government' set ups. This book would probably be too basic for a 2nd grader but not engaging enough for someone much younger. My plan is to use some of the information to add information to our lapbooks but this isn't really anything beyond a powerpoint presentation. My 2nd grader didn't learn anything from it.The writing itself was good, there were no spelling mistakes but there were a few fragmented sentences, The information didn't flow very well. I also feel the statement "The Native people lived in peace..." to be very simplistic and downright inaccurate. There are multiple historical accounts of bloody wars between opposing tribes. To put all the blame for any negatives on European settlers is not correct. If you're looking for a very basic tale of generalized life before the Europeans settled this is your book.**DISCLAIMER**I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Great book with many pictures and stories to it. My niece loves to read it with me.In the United States, Native Americans are considered to be people whose pre-Columbian ancestors were indigenous to the lands within the nation's modern boundaries. These peoples were composed of numerous distinct tribes, bands, and ethnic groups, and many of these groups survive intact today as sovereign nations. The terms Native Americans use to refer to themselves vary regionally and generationally, with many older Native Americans self-identifying as "Indians" or "American Indians", while younger Native Americans often identify as "Indigenous". Which terms should be used to refer to Native Americans has at times been controversial. The term "Native American" has been adopted by major newspapers and some academic groups, but has not traditionally included Native Hawaiians or certain Alaskan Natives, such as Aleut, Yup'ik, or Inuit peoples. Indigenous American peoples from Canada are known as First Nations.Contemporary Native Americans have a unique relationship with the United States because they may be members of nations, tribes, or bands with sovereignty and treaty rights. Cultural activism since the late 1960s has increased political participation and led to an expansion of efforts to teach and preserve Indigenous languages for younger generations and to establish a greater cultural infrastructure: Native Americans have founded independent newspapers and online media, recently including FNX, the first Native American television channel;established Native American studies programs, tribal schools and universities, and museums and language programs; and have increasingly been published as authors.I received this item discounted in exchange for my testing, inspecting and reviewing it. I received no compensation for my review and state my honest and unbiased opinion of the product. My words, images and the rating I provide are my own and my overall analysis of this particular product is where I stand based on what the listing contained upon ordering it, what I received with this product and my personal experience with this product. Thank you for reading it!

This was another awesome book! The Baby Professor books are great tool when wanting to have your young readers start learning new subjects. These are great quick reads that are visually stimulating as well as fun to read. These are meant to be reference tools not whole subject books. Each of the books tend to be about 18 pages long, just enough to intrigue growing minds. I nanny two young children and I'm always trying to keep them busy with new things to do. I really like that I can download these books onto my tablet with the amazon kindle app and have access to them whenever I want. It makes it a lot easier than carrying around a whole bunch of books and cleanup is amazing! I like to have these available when we are running errands and the kids are bored. They are just enough information that allows the kids to learn something in a short period but even makes them excited to learn more about the subjects. "U.S. History: Native Americans To Early Settlers" is full of information that teaches kids about the about everything from who Native Americans, who they are, how they lived and and a lot more facts. This is perfect for young little readers, both boy and girls. I did receive the book at a discount or for free for my unbiased review. My opinions and feelings about the product are 100% my own and haven't been swayed in anyway. If you liked my review and found it helpful, please feel free to give it a like.
