A really fun and well-written history of lipstick.
Very well researched book. Great source of quotes & information about history, famous makeup artists and cosmetic company founders. Interesting "recipes" for making your own lip products. Good bibliography. Unfortunately I feel toward the end of the book that Ms. Pallingston tries too hard to be cute or funny with her "time traveler" and 300 uses for lipstick. To me this spoils an otherwise superb story of this magical cosmetic.
I never knew lipstick had such a fascinating history and, what's more, that I would ever be so fascinated by it! This book is truly a fun, easy read. I found myself thinking, as I was reading, "Wow, I had no idea! What else???" and turning page after page to find out. And the style that the author writes in is so open and friendly, I felt as if she were one of my girlfriends, chatting on the phone about makeup! I have to say, I really enjoyed this book, and I think everyone who wears makeup -- or is simply a history buff! -- would as well. Plus, it's a perfect gift for a girl of any age (I picked one up for my mom, too!). I'm recommending it to all my friends!

I bought this book for my aunt, but read it first because it was so entertaining and captivating. It is distinguished by its witty, sharp writing. "Lipstick" combines a history of the evolution of makeup with sentiment, analysis, and practical advice on buying cosmetics.
I'm a big fan of lipstick, and couldn't resist this book -- especially with it's great looking and stylish cover. I loved it. Unlike other books on the subject this one had it all. A history of the cosmetic, tips on how to wear it, what your choices in color, etc. say about you, quotes from famous people about their feelings on the subject. It's entertaining, yet really substantive. (Especially fun were the sections on what your lipstick says about you, and the lipstick trivia.) I highly recommend it.
"Lipstick" a punchy, wild ride into the past, present and future of the color stick so many of us hold sacred. Careful research, personal anecdotes, laugh out loud humor and more, keep the eye moving and the page turning. I kicked back, put my feet up, and spent a few hours entering the lipstick zone. What fun. Great gift, with a tube or two of the colorful stuff, for that special someone.
Good fun book! Lots and lots of information on makeup history, written as a sort of love letter to what the author calls the world's favorite cosmetic. Since my mother loves lipstick so much, she reallly really loved this book.
My friend Sarah got this book as a gift from her Aunt Wendy, who also likes to send books about serial killers, and pictures of other people's dead cats. I flipped through it when I was staying at her house in Baltimore a few month's ago. I really like Baltimore.The book seemed good, but not as good as the one Aunt Wendy sent about vampires.
