About the Author

Philip Freeman is Qualley Professor of Classics at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and a former professor of classics at Washington University in St. Louis. He was selected as a visiting fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton for January 2012. He earned the first joint Ph.D. in classics and Celtic studies from Harvard University, and has been a visiting scholar at the Harvard Divinity School, the American Academy in Rome, and the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. The author of several previous books including Alexander the Great, St. Patrick of Ireland and Julius Caesar, he lives with his family in Decorah, Iowa. The author does an excellent job harmonizing history with the letters of St. Patrick. He brings in noteworthy, historical data that really fill in some of the gaps missing from the historical accounts of St. Patrick's life...given that the details of St. Patrick's life are largely shrouded in mystery.This book was not so much a biography…as it was a historical accounting of the church, that happened to lean on the story of St. Patrick (really only his letters and what the man himself wrote of his life).My one criticism of this work is that it was wrought with speculation. Well the author doesn't excellent job unpacking the details that are known of Patrick's life…he consistently filled in historical details with his own speculations about what Patrick, his family, and others may have been thinking throughout the book. It was highly distracting, in an otherwise well-written book.That said… I rated it four stars for a reason. It was a well-composed work, easy to read, and chock-full of accurate historical data verified by multiple sources. Definitely worth your time as a student of history. Further…the translations of St. Patrick's letters in the back of the book, are worth the price of admission alone.

I'm not sure what led me to finally read this book, because I was afraid it would either be an unhistorical repetition of legends, or else an attempt to discredit people's devotion to Patrick. Happily, this extraordinary biography would be as easily appreciated by the devout believer as by the most secular skeptic. Freeman successfully manages to place Patrick in his historical context, while using Patrick's own writing to sketch a vivid picture of who he was as a human being, aside from or in addition to devotional legend. Best of all, the narrative is quite lively and well written.

I enjoyed the biography, but I had to rate it less than 5 stars because of an inaccuracy I found. The author says there was no High King during Patrick's early Times in Ireland, but the respected scholars on the Irish high kingship would disagree. This slight oversight made me question the rigor of research that went into the claims made as fact throughout the book.I assume it to be accurate overall and perhaps there is just a few mistake like the one I noticed.

In this work Mr. Freeman has presented a very lucid and well thought out accounting of the famous saint. Being of half Irish descent, I was naturally drawn to learn more about this illustrious figure of the distant past. I imagine that he may well have set my ancestors on the straight and narrow path of Christianity but, irregardless of that, his great and honorable role in helping moderate and humanize a people famed for their wild and uncivilized behavior may have also contributed to the fact that so many of America's ablest and most successful political leaders claim Ireland as their (or part of their) ancestral home. I feel that the author not only communicated with his readers in a very intimate and entertaining fashion but also obviously researched the subject thoroughly before composing his book. All in all, St. Patrick of Ireland is, in my humble opinion, a superior piece of authorship illuminating an often little understood icon of piety and religious dedication (who has long been celebrated at festivals worldwide in a most un-pious way) by helping the reader through careful and thorough research to seperate the man from the legend. This book, as such, should be recommended reading for high school and college students (to help temper their future celebratory revels, ofcourse).

This biography was helpful because it presents a lot of information about St. Patrick in a clear, concise way that's easy to read. However, anyone with even the pretense of an orthodox Christian view will notice a bias--in some chapters more than others. It took me a while to get past p. 61: "We can admire the spirit of Pelagius and declare that Augustine was a killjoy who burdened Christian thought forever with the idea of original sin..." Really, can we? (That statement is not historically accurate, since original sin [yes, even Augustine's view of it,though his was better articulated] wasn't exactly a novel idea.) That said, Freeman does present a fairly balanced historical view throughout the book.I don't claim any expertise on the matter, but one point of contention: It's odd that in quoting St. Patrick's beliefs from his "Confessions," (pp.77-78) Freeman references the Apostles' Creed. It would seem much more relevant to point to the revised Nicene Creed from 381 AD, the structure of which Patrick closely follows.

I really enjoy these books. If you like older man/younger woman romances, you will enjoy this book. The characters are interesting, well-developed and have chemistry. The story is interesting, well-written with a happily ever after. I especially like the extended epilogues. In addition to receiving an arc, I purchased the book for my collection.

For two years she watched him from afar and learned everything about him.She used this knowledge their first "planned" meeting.Yeah she stalked him.But that soon was mutual once the pretence was over and her identity was revealed. To him this is a coincidence her planned.Eric is angry with them and kicks Elena out of his apartment into Lachlans hands.So romantic was this story.Informative as usual for this author.Happy ending all around.Jealousy and possessive behavior between both.When Lachlan learns of her "planned" meeting he is a little taken back by her feelings for him not mad at her deception.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I received this book with the understanding that I could leave a voluntary and honest review.In this book we meet Elena Andrews and Lachlan Wright. Elena has known all about Lachlan from her brother Eric. The more she sees of him though the more she wants to be with this man she becomes obsessed. So she scrimps and saves and comes to Australia to meet him and to see her brother. One look is all it takes for Lachlan to know he has found his woman. When he learns he only has 5 days with her. He knows he better move fast or he could lose her forever. He knows she has become his new obsession. Can these two find a HEA or will her brother and where they each live make that impossible?This is another amazing hit by this author. It does have its ups and downs I really want to tell you about. However I don't want to ruin it for any other readers. I will say this book will grab you from page 1 and not let go till the very end. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

This is a well written romance with a great storyline and plot. The characters are likeable and develops nicely through the story. I like it is written in dual POV which gives me as the reader a lot more of the thoughts and feelings of the main characters. It brings them closer and makes the story more real.It is a story that at first confused me because I could not find out if she had been in Manly Beach for weeks or just had arrived. Elenas big brother is in Australia competing in a surfcompetition. His best friend is an Australian who is also a surfer and taking part in the competion. She has been stalking Lachlan for a long time and now she is there to take him.Their chemistry is amazing and the passion between them is great. I like his protective behavior in spite of her brothers actions and her lies.Absolutely a story that is worth reading because of the emotional content and the captivating writing style. It is short but worth it.

An interesting and fascinating book, full of information about a fascinating time.It's bit boring at the beginning unless you are interested in the character he talks about, then it starts with facts, name and fascinating stories of less known name of the dotcom time.I liked the style of writing and the book kept my attention till the last page.Recommended!Many thanks to Grove Atlantic and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

I'm really torn about how to review this book. On the one hand, it offers an incredibly valuable look back at the 90's dotcom boom times, an era that deserves much more attention than it receives. On the other hand, a lot of the most valuable analysis comes only after a quixotic first-person quest to locate and understand the unknowable -- the enigmatic founder of Psuedo, Josh Harris. To me, the book suffers from the same thing that Pseudo did: an excellent premise that ultimately gets sidetracked by an obsession with celebrity/fame. Ultimately whether Harris is telling the truth or not, or whether he is a genius, or whether he is an artist, is irrelevant in my mind. Harris isn't the point. Those of use who watched and engaged with Pseudo were part of something bigger than one person, until it suddenly disappeared forever. I finished the book having a lot more questions about the Pseudo community itself, and how the Internet has lost so much of what initially made it such an exciting, unpredictable place. I thank the author for prompting me to ask these questions myself, but I would have also loved to focus more on why Pseudo mattered rather than deciphering exactly what had transpired in those crazy, early Internet years.

Moondust is one of my favourite reads of all time, so when I heard there was a new book out by Andrew Smith I bought it - and it's just so nice to be in the company of this author again.Without giving too much of the game away, Smith takes us on a journey that starts in London, then swerves abruptly to Ethiopia, then on to New York, then off to Utah... anywhere that he can find JOSH.It's a wild ride as he tries to track down one of the strangest characters our modern world has created.Like I say, I don't want to give too much of the game away... but the person he's after is Josh Harris. An oddball, possibly autistic, geekus who ruled the party-scene of nineties New York, much as Warhol had a generation earlier. His early experiments in `living in public' (his term) prefigure Big Brother, Facebook and any other `social media' invasion you can think of.I couldn't believe I hadn't heard of this guy. But more than that, I couldn't believe that I had forgotten a time when this didn't exist. For the first time in years I stopped and thought about the first time I had used the internet and when that was. I suddenly realized how much the world has changed.`May you live in interesting times'.The gift of this book is to remind us that we do. Smith charts the history of the dotcom boom-bust-reboom and offers us a space to think about its implicationsI wouldn't say that at the end of the book I had answers to these questions. But I had, at least, started to think about it - and when you do think about it, it is amazing.You may not be of a like-mind to me, but if you are, in chapter 20 you will find out something about (*)ankers shenanigans - and how they financed the dotcom `bust' - that throws yet more perspective on the times in which we live.

Most recently, he served as the chief data scientist at BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, building machine learning products and solutions for the financial industry, focused on fraud, compliance, and cybersecurity. He has previously authored many books on machine learning such as Machine Learning: End-to-End guide for Java developers: Data Analysis, Machine Learning, and Neural Networks simplified and Mastering Java Machine Learning: A Java developer's guide to implementing machine learning and big data architectures. His Ph.D. in Big Data Machine Learning was one of the first in generalized scaling of machine learning algorithms using evolutionary computing.   John Liu spent the past 22 years managing quantitative research, data science, and portfolio management teams. He is currently head of data science and data strategy at Digital Reasoning in Franklin, Tennessee. Most recently, John was managing partner and CIO at Spartus Capital, a quantitative investment firm in New York. Prior to that, John held senior executive roles at Citigroup, where he oversaw the portfolio solutions group that advised pensions, endowments, and sovereign wealth funds on quantitative investment and risk strategies; at the Indiana public employees pension, where he managed the $7B public equities portfolio; at Vanderbilt University, where he oversaw the $2B equity strategies and hedge fund portfolios; and at BNP Paribas, where he managed the US index options and MSCI delta-one trading desks. I originally bought this for my nephews, who have a fascination with dragons and such at the moment. It's definitely a result of the Harry Potter phenomenon, but the similarity ends at its "magical" quality. Its intent is the opening of minds to the hidden worlds of the imagination, and a rekindling of young peoples' interests in areas of mythology and classic literature. Supposedly the work of the last dragonmaster, the book aims to dispel the myths on dragons, recalling Hagrid's comments that they are "very misunderstood creatures". While Dragonology has lots of bells and whistles and moving parts, this is, as it says, more a handbook, and not as fun as its predecessor. It is great for stimulating the imagination of children (of all ages, apparently), but it's a slightly more involved text than Dragonology, and therefore likely to appeal to children 10+. It's artwork and some of its content appears based on The Flight of Dragons, by Peter Dickinson, upon which Discovery's Dragon's World DVD was also based. Both of these are great additions to this book, if you can get them.

I got this and several others in the series for my dragon-loving daughter and the quality was impressive! A LOT of thought and work was put into the creation and there are tons of little surprises tucked in throughout the books. I would absolutely recommend any of these books for anyone who loves dragons!

My childhood favorite book. Well written, very cool, makes you feel like you're holding a secret, exclusive tome for elite dragonologists. Has cute sticker sheets in the back that I never knew about because I borrowed this from a library all the time.

Movies and books on magical things have been so prevalent for young people, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Dark Crystal, etc. Kids love 'em. This field guide to Dragon types is pure fun for the young, and the young at heart. Illustrations are great. The author has researched the myths and legends thoroughly. Not only intriguing for the young, but a nice coffee table book for a favorite friend.

Superb book. It is well bound with heavy weight pages. Good blend of words and graphics for a young reader to not be overwhelmed. My grandson is thrilled with the dragon art and info. Great purchase.
